A major new allWales exhibition, Following the 

Flame, is a celebration of Wales’ impressive 

involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic 

Games, and forms an integral part of The Power 

of the Flame, Wales’ contribution to the Cultural 

Olympiad, in the build up to London 2012. 

Ucheldre is one of the principal partners in this important project. 

As a taster of things to come, this small launch exhibition will: 

introduce the project to Ynys Môn, include a range of workshops for 

school children, and invite people of all ages and abilities to get 

involved and contribute creatively to the major exhibition which will 

be launched at Ucheldre in July 2011.

A Boy Called Dad 15 Wednesday 6 Mercher 

British film treading relatively fresh ground 

in looking at teenage parenthood from the 

boy’s viewpoint. Filmed partly on 

Anglesey and the Wirral, it tells the tale of 

14 year old boy, who only ever wanted a 

dad, but got a son.

The second in a series of 4 vocal 

workshops with renowned voice coach 

Marian Bryfdir in a stepbystep course 

to: encourage correct breathing and 

posture, eliminate muscular tension, free 

the voice and produce a healthy and 

more beautiful sound through a series of 

exercises and songs. 

Workshops will be held in a relaxed, friendly and 

supportive atmosphere, and are open to all levels of 

ability from beginners to more practised singers 

wishing to develop their voices further. Plus the series 

includes a Welsh National Opera (WNO) Choral 

Singing Day. The series will be followed in early 

2011 by a new course of 4 opera workshops (15 Jan,

opportunity to perform in Swansea City Opera’s 

production of The Barber of Seville on 16 April.

Clare Dudman, author of A Place of Meadows and Tall 

Trees, a novel about the settlers in Patagonia, gives an 

illustrated talk about her book, and her background 

research into the Welsh history of Patagonia.

Afrodisiac Friday 22 Gwener 

Afrodisiac explores ritual and magic in African and South American 

cultures through an exhilarating mix of music and visual art. 

Devised by composer Charlie Barber, Afrodisiac brings together two 

highly respected musicians of traditional African instruments, 

Seckou Keita, an inspired and charismatic performer of the kora 

(the West African harplute) and Chartwell Dutiro, a maestro of the 

mbira, (the Zimbabwean ‘thumb piano’), and an ensemble of 

seven classical musicians. 

From African moon love spells and Haitian voodoo to Brazilian 

dances and Ghanaian tribal cult music, Afrodisiac celebrates a 

mysterious brew of love and the supernatural combined with the 

magical ‘Imaginative Realism’ paintings of Cuban artist Raul Speek.

Voskresenije Thursday 28 Iau 

Voskresenije is a choir of nine mixed voices, all of whom trained at 

the St Petersburg Conservatoire, and are soloists in their own right. 

Their conductor, Jurij Maruk, was previously conductor at the 

Mariinskij Theatre. 

A regular feature of the Festival because, as one audience 

member commented, the choir’s heavenly voices transports one 

into another world. A repertoire mostly of Russian music, sacred 

and folk, with a few Western gems. Definitely not to be missed.

to see this newly restored scifi 

masterpiece. It been restored to its 

former glory, but with added additional 

footage arbitrarily cut from the original 

and thought lost until two years ago. The 

Master Of Metropolis’ son falls for an 

angelic social worker, while a scientist 

creates a seductive female robot to infiltrate the revolutionary 

movement. Directed by Fritz Lang, and starring Gustav Fröhlich,

An evening of separate Celtic voices, and a fusion of music 

produced by the collaboration of three excellent professional 

musicians, promises to be an entrancing evening. 

The musicians come from nativelanguage 

communities in Ireland, 

Wales and Gaelic Scotland, Siân 

James is a harpist and singersongwriter 

from DyffrynTanat, in 

Powys. Ingrid Henderson is from 

Lochaber and plays the clarsach 

and many other instruments, while 

Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich is a solo 

traditional singer from the West 

Kerry Gaeltacht. 

They have also worked together to 

produce a CD.

KEYBOARD WIZARDRY 

THE GENIUS OF FRANZ LISZT 

2011 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Franz 

Liszt and Iwan LlewelynJones’s forthcoming 

series of concerts at Ucheldre takes a close look 

at the work of this extraordinary pianist, 

composer and teacher. 

Franz Liszt was one of the most successful 

musicians of the 19th century, achieving pop star 

status with his dazzling displays of virtuosity. 

In the first of these recitals, Iwan performs the 

dramatic masterpiece ‘Vallee d’Obermann’, the 

sparkling Valse Impromptu and Liszt’s piano 

solo arrangement of the ‘Love’ theme from 

Richard Wagner’s opera ‘Tristan and Isolde’. 

To mark the end of the bicentennial celebrations 

for the birth of Frederic Chopin, Iwan will also 

perform his own transcription of the First Piano 

Concerto for piano solo.

These Visions 

The award winning Lunar Saxophone 

Quartet combines versatility and 

virtuosity, bringing to the concert

dynamic and adventurous young 

groups.

seven foremost Welsh composers:

Vocal Workshops with Marian Bryfdir Saturday 13 Sadwrn 

The third workshop with renowned voice coach Marian 

Bryfdir in a stepbystep course to: encourage correct 

breathing and posture, eliminate muscular tension, 

free the voice and produce a healthy and more 

beautiful sound through a series of exercises and songs. 

The series will be followed in early 2011 by a new 

course of 4 opera workshops leading to the

Eleftheria Kotzia 

Guitarist Eletheria Kotzia brings a delightful 

selection of songs and dances from all over 

world including work by Villa Lobos, Bach, 

Cordero, Fampas, Tadic and Hadjidakis. 

The Gramophone wrote of one of her 

concerts: “a perfect way to spend a magical 

hour’, and so we too look forward with 

anticipation to hearing her work her magic 

in the perfect acoustic of Ucheldre.

The beautifully plaintive sound of the oboe takes centre stage in Britten’s 

Phantasy (1932), written for the great oboist Leon Goussens. Tann’s 

emotionally charged music draws its inspiration from the ruins of a 13th 

century castle near Merthyr Tydfil. Mozart and Schubert’s music contain, as 

ever, elegantly crafted melodies and appealing harmony.

A comedy double bill consisting of 

Bill and Ben the Twilight Men & Baby Sparklers 

Both written and directed by our very own award winning Frank 

Gibbons 

The Rep has been seen in many disguises, but this will be the first time 

they will be actng as children, no comments please. Baby Sparklers is set 

in November 1970; a group of children are guarding their bonfire 

against a rival group, but a greater danger is posed by the Firework Man 

who lures away one of the children. 

Bill & Ben the Twilight Men, is set in a pub run by a widow, who is 

wooed by a sauve newcomer to the village, much to the disgust of her 

grumpy barman. He suddenly realizes that he has feelings for her, but 

will he be able to win her affections against all odds?
