Tanenbaum Serpentine<br />

A sculpture graciously donated by renowned Toronto<br />

philanthropists and long-time ROM supporters Joey and<br />

Toby Tanenbaum in honour of William Thorsell, ROM<br />

Director and CEO, graces the Hyacinth Gloria Chen Crystal<br />

Court. Measuring five feet, seven inches tall, the beautiful<br />

green sculpture is carved from serpentine, a silicate mineral<br />

resembling jade. On one side, an inscription etched in gold<br />

Chinese characters reads “Fortune will change with the arrival<br />

of [this].”<br />

Darwin: The evolution Revolution<br />

This exhibition featured the most complete collection of<br />

specimens, artifacts, manuscripts and memorabilia related to<br />

Charles Darwin, the revolutionary 19th-century thinker who<br />

changed our understanding of the origin and nature of species.<br />

Live specimens of some of the animals Darwin would have<br />

seen in his voyage to South America and the Galapágos Islands,<br />

and a special activity area for families and children, are among<br />

the highlights. This exhibition was organized by the American<br />

<strong>Museum</strong> of Natural History, New York, in collaboration<br />

with the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>, the <strong>Museum</strong> of Science,<br />

Boston, The Field <strong>Museum</strong>, Chicago, and the Natural History<br />

<strong>Museum</strong>, London.<br />

in Upper Canada, produced by the Archives of <strong>Ontario</strong>; and<br />

The Black Canadian Experience in <strong>Ontario</strong> 1834–1914: Flight,<br />

Freedom, Foundation, a joint project of the Archives of <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

and the <strong>Ontario</strong> Black History Society—celebrated Black<br />

History Month at the ROM.<br />

an elaborate reproduction of charles darwin’s study from down House is one of the<br />

centrepiece attractions of Darwin: The Evolution Revolution, the most in-depth exhibition<br />

ever mounted on this highly original thinker.
