AND TAFE COURSE GUIDE

A WORD FROM
OUR VICE-CHANCELLOR
Your university days
can be some of the best
times in your life, so take
advantage of what VU has
to offer.”
Welcome to Victoria University’s
2012 undergraduate course guide.
By reviewing the course options
offered at VU you’ll be able to
make an informed choice on the
right course for your chosen career.
We offer a supportive environment for our students
plus a wide range of scholarships across all fields of
study. I encourage you to take advantage of these
and the many support services we provide to ensure
you make the most of your studies. We will work
hard to make sure your time at VU is valuable and
enjoyable.
Our courses are tailored to meet the needs of industry
and the latest workplace practices. Work placement
is one of the most effective means of learning and
preparing you for work. That’s why 25 per cent of the
assessment of all our courses is related to learning in
the workplace.
We are one of only a few universities to offer TAFE as
well as higher education courses, which range from
certificates and diplomas through to undergraduate,
master and doctoral degrees. Many of our students
use a TAFE qualification as a stepping stone to a
higher education degree.
for more Details about courses Visit www.Vu.eDu.au/courses
But university is not just about study. Our campuses
are an inspiring mix of cultures, people and languages
– you will form friendships, many of which will last
well beyond your uni days. We also have clubs and
fantastic sports facilities so you can take a break from
the classroom and enjoy activities with your peers.
Once you’ve checked this course guide, we believe
there are three very good reasons why you might
choose to study with us:
• Access – more than 600 courses with credits and
pathways between courses
• Support – our support services are designed to
ensure you achieve the best you possibly can
• Our graduates get jobs – employers place a high
value on the work-readiness of VU graduates
Your university days can be some of the best times in
your life, so take advantage of what VU has to offer.
I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to
Victoria University in 2012.
EDUCATION AND
TRANSITION
I’d met so many people
who couldn’t advance in
their careers because they
lacked a solid education,
so I decided to become
a teacher and make a
difference at the grass
roots level. VU provided
fantastic opportunities
and I felt supported and
encouraged from my
first day.”
Study law and other legal courses in the heart
of Melbourne’s legal district and prepare
yourself for an exciting career. VU emphasises
the established traditions of the theory and
philosophy of law, but links them to modern
facilities and up-to-the-minute technology.
You will find openings in suburban legal
practices and community organisations working
for social justice, through to large, prestigious
international law firms. You may become a top
silk arguing the finer points of corporations
law, a community legal expert, an adviser to
government or represent defendants in tough
criminal cases.
We have an expert legal teaching team,
including barristers and solicitors, and our
partners in Australia include the Institute of
Legal Executives, State Government
departments and the Law Institute of Victoria.
We have strong links with institutions in Asia
and the US, and our international student
exchange programs allow you to study
overseas. What more evidence do you need?
HOSPITALITY
After working in the
I wanted my career to go
and that motivated me to
excel in my studies. My
The world is becoming increasingly mobile –
and getting smaller. To keep up, tourism and
hospitality services are rapidly growing. There
are literally millions of jobs for qualified tourism
and hospitality operators, from running your
own successful catering business to booking and
promoting travel, and managing hospitality or
tourism ventures, here and internationally.
We have equipped our teaching facilities with
the very best the world has to offer. We use
Events Pro industry software for eventmanagement,
tourism-simulated learning
experiences, and fully operational restaurants
with commercial training kitchens. VenU is our
brand new training restaurant, fitted with
state-of-the-art facilities and seating 100 guests.
We partner with tourism bodies throughout
Australia, as well as international partner
Le Cordon Bleu, making your studies and work
placements immediately relevant and practical
to your future career.
VU is the only university to be inducted into the
Victorian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame. Our
Bachelor of Business in Hospitality and Tourism
courses are EPAS accredited. They are the first
courses in Australia to receive this accreditation
from the European Foundation for Management
Development (EFMD).
Industry has now awarded VU the state award
for tourism education six times.
TRANSPORT
AND LOGISTICS
The VU lecturers have
real, current industry
experience. They made
us question things and
see things in a way
we’d never seen them
before. This critical
thinking is crucial for
my everyday work.”
KaThleen GUiry, DomesTic operaTions
Look around your world and you’ll soon realise
that everything we rely on – from food to
cosmetics, computer products and medical
supplies – has arrived at its destination via a
complex supply chain and logistics network.
With a qualification in transport, logistics and
supply chain at VU, you can connect with any
industry, anywhere in the world. Whether
it’s the transportation of precious goods,
managing major events, international trade or
co-ordinating disaster relief, every industry
relies on supply chains.
You may also be considering a career in forklift
or heavy vehicle operations, warehousing,
purchasing or the legal and environmental
implications around supply chain management.
With a predicted industry shortage of 24,000
people within four years in Victoria alone, you’ll
be in hot demand when you graduate.
VU’s Institute for Logistics and Supply Chain
Management has partnerships with local,
national and multinational enterprises and
government, providing workplace learning and
research opportunities.
VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
INTERNATIONAL
GLOBAL LEARNING
Learning another culture
and travelling over Europe
has contributed to my
personal and academic
development. You learn
so much about history,
culture and languages.”
OLIVIA GUMIENNY, BACHELOR OF EDUCATION
ATTENDED JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY,
SWEDEN, 2010
INTERNATIONAL APPROACH
Melbourne is a multicultural city, and the diversity of
our student body is a true reflection of that.
We have around 3000 international students
studying onshore, who bring with them 100
cultures from around the world. And with over
40 per cent of our local students reporting the
use of a language other than English at home,
we are very much a global community.
International students choose us for our strong course
pathways and linkages from our overseas partner
campuses, and because our outstanding facilities
and support services will ensure that their experience
is rich and rewarding. We offer a wide range of
learning and support, and teach in the workplace, in
classrooms, locally and internationally.
INTERNATIONAL
CURRICULUM
Our global partners include big business, educational
institutions and community groups. These partnerships
and collaborations help us keep up to date with global
markets and work practices, so our curriculum stays at
the forefront of industry standards. Our international
research helps develop courses, and has outcomes that
assist our local and global communities.
