The sura refers to the event that took place in the year of the 

birth of the Prophet (pbuh) in 570 AD. Abraha’s army with an 

elelphant marched to Makka to attack and destroy the Ka’ba. 

Allah set upon them a huge flock of birds which pelted the army 

with small stones in their beaks thus devastating the army.

The sura is a supplement to Suratul Feel and describes the 

blessing on the tribe of Quraysh so that they might be thankful 

to Allah and worship Him. The Quraysh were the Prophet’s 

(pbuh) own clan, who opposed his mission and felt they were 

the only aristocrats fit to live in Makka.

Prophet (pbuh) was taunted and called ‘abtar’ after the death of 

his son in infancy. 

The sura revealed in response to the taunts and comes from the 

word ‘kathara’ which means plenty. 

Tradition description of Kawthar is that of a spring in Heaven. It 

also means abundance of descendants.

• Drink from Kawthar

Al-Kafirun: Those who cover up the truth 


1. Say: O unbelievers!

The Quraysh proposed to the Prophet (pbuh) that they and the 

Muslims should both agree to worship each otherʼs God(s). They 

believed that this way both parties would be able to live in 

harmony. The sura was revealed in answer to the proposal 

repeating the verses just as the proposal was repeated in order 

to totally reject it. The sura forms the Islamic answer to any 

suggestion of compromise in belief

The sura gives the glad tidings of Divine help and victory to the 

Prophet (pbuh) when groups of people would enter Islam. 

To thank Allah the Prophet (pbuh) is invted to ‘glorify’ and ‘praise’ 

Allah, and to ask for forgiveness. 

The sura is the very last to be revealed to the Prophet (pbuh) as 

a whole. 

The message is that Islam will ultimately be successful.

Al-Lahab: The Flame 


1. Perdition overtake both hands of Abu Lahab, and he will 

perish.

The sura talks about Abu Lahab, the uncle of the Prophet (pbuh) 

who opposed the message of Islam and indicates that none of 

his wealth will be of use to him. 

The wife of Abu Lahab used to collect thorny sticks which she 

laid in the path of the Prophet (pbuh) when he went for Fajr 

prayers. 

The twisted rope around her neck implies that she was stangling 

her soul with the rope of her own making.

The essence of this sura is that we must seek refuge in Allah in 

any difficulty - physical or spiritual, and keep guard of superstitions.

The final sura of the Qur’an, this sura complements Suratul 

Falaq. In this sura we are asking for refuge for protection from 

the energies whose nature we do not understand, and whose 

creation is not visible to us.

• Relief of pain – fast cure when read on medicine 

• Safe from Jinn & shaytan
