President’s Message
In Full Swing
in 2007
he new year is in full swing and as pictured throughout
this month's magazine, the SCBA, its affiliates,
and sections are already busy at work. Wiley Manuel Bar
Association President Jean-Pierre Francillette, WMBA member
Renee Carter and others put in many hours to make the
Eighth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner a success.
Barristers' Club President Hooshie Broomand, Executive
Vice President Ashley West and other members of the
Barristers' Club of Sacramento facilitated the highly regarded
Bridging The Gap® program, an orientation for new lawyers
and Melinda Williams and Coral Henning of the
Sacramento Law Foundation
hosted their annual Crab
I mention
these events
to highlight
just some
of the many
ways that
the SCBA’s
lawyers roll
up their
sleeves after
a long day
at work.
Feed fund-raising event. The
SCBA's own Bar Council participated
in a fruitful daylong
planning retreat to further
its goal of renewing itself
and finding new ways to contribute
to our community.
I mention these events to
highlight just some of the
many ways that the SCBA's
lawyers roll up their sleeves
after a long day at work.
When work is done, and
sometimes when it is not, we
must make time for our families
and ourselves. Retiring
Minds Want To Know how to
prepare for the point at which
we close our office doors for
good and the articles featured
herein are aimed at providing
you with varying perspectives
on how to prepare for and
enjoy your retirement.
Whether you are retiring
within the next five years or
the next 20 years, the SCBA,
its affiliates and sections provide
numerous opportunities
for you to remain active in
our legal community. Even if
you and your family just take a walk in Legal Services of
Northern California's Annual Valentine
Fun Run, there are many ways to be
active and I challenge everyone to do just
that - be active in 2007.
Operation Protect
& Defend
A Commitment to Civic
Education by Lawyers and Judges
Seeks Volunteers for its 2007
Education Program Series
In 2001, in response to alarming statistics showing
a significant percentage of high school and
college students lacked even a basic understanding
of the Constitution and American government
and its history, a group of lawyers and judges
from the Sacramento region formed “Operation
Protect & Defend.”
The judges, lawyers and teachers involved in
Operation Protect & Defend have created an engaging
and inspiring program focusing on the historically
important aspects of American Government
and the U.S. Constitution. Our high school program
for 2006-07 relies on the true story of a 1906 lynching
in Chattanooga, as described in the book
Contempt of Court by Mark Curriden.
This year's program will include three segments:
1) teacher-led introduction of the story and
Constitutional rights; 2) the Dialogue on America,
where a lawyer-judge team will engage students in
a dialogue about the Constitution and the principles
in Contempt of Court; and 3) the Story of
America essay contest.
Operation Protect and Defend seeks volunteers to
participate in the Dialogue on America and to
grade the essay contest. If you are interested in
helping, please contact Heather Candy at (916) 340-
