For most of the skaters
this will be their first crack
Ten-year-old Pilkington
the club s skate-off. •
Six girls competed for
four-year member of the
club, taking first spot and
Funn finishing second.
This will be Funn's first
Dorsey is the lone club
Kangaroos' preseason perfect
Quesnel Kangaroos
finished the pre-season with
an unblemished 5-0 record
last Wednesday as they
outscored the Mohawks 8-5
at Prince George in the final
exhibition game of the year
for both teams.
It was Quesnel's third
win against Prince George,
and came before the
smallest Mohawk crowd in
10 years: just 123 fans paid
to see the game.
Prince George opened the
scoring in the first period
on a goal by Wes Scott but
the Kangaroos came back
with four straight to take a
4-1 lead.
Dave Wood brought the
Mohawks within two near
the end of the first and
Prince George tied it in the
second period on goals by
Rick Symenuk and Gord
Merritt.
It was all Quesnel in the
third, however, as they
capitalized on Mohawk
miscues with four goals to
wrap up the win.
Brad Crossan got the
lone Prince George goal of '
the period.
Lyle Inglis scored
another two goals to bring
his pre-season total to eight,
while Brian Festerling with
two, Rob Lattman, Don
Festerling and Barry
Gagnon rounded out the
'Roos scoring.
"It went better than last
time," said acting coach
Dick Marsh of the game.
"We outshot them (44-25)
and we played in their end a
"We were passing the
puck much better."
Marsh said the players
still have to work on playing
as a team, but they are
starting to come around.
Brian David played the
first period and a half in
goal for Quesnel.
The diminutive Quesnel
Junior Secondary P.E.
teacher was making his first
start and played "very
well" said Marsh.
"He's a little unorthodox,"
said Marsh, "but
One of the important things for all Canadians to realize
about the Constitutional Debate that is going on now, is
that the government controls all stages of the debate.
Many people could easily make the assumption that the
speeches which are being given/now can alter the Liberal
proposal.
In fact, a/ny speeches given in the House of Commons
are intended to inform the public, rather than to change
Liberal minds.
The best thing that an MP can do at this stage is let the
people of his riding know what the dangers arein the
Liberal proposal.
The present government has shown on many occasions
that it listens to opinion polls more than it does to sound
arguments. My job, as I see it, is to convey the opinions of
people in my riding so that the government will take
another look at the patriatioh plan for the Constitution.
So what exactly is the procedure that is being followed in
the Constitutional Debate?
When the Act was introduced into the House of Commons,
the purpose was for the legislation to be referred to
a Committee. The present debate is over that motion, and
at this point there can be ho changes to the Resolution.
Eventually, the motion for the referral to Committee
will be passed, and a Committee will be established to
recommend amendments to the Act.
This committee will be controlled by government
Members, and so the Liberals will have control at this stage
also.
Finally, the Resolution will be sent back to the House of
Commons for the implementaton of the amendments
recommended by the Committee.
At this stage, the Liberals can continue to control the
Debate because of their majority. In other words, the
Committee's recommendations can be totally ignored.
After this, the Resolution will be rubber-stamped by'the
Senate, and the entire package will be sent to London for
approval there.
What, then, is the point of this long, drawn-out procedure?
Very simply, a Member of the Opposition hopes
that during the Debate, he can rally enough public support
against the action which the government proposes.
Eventually, it does come back to the man in the street
after all! The government will try to shorten the length of
the Debate so that the Opposition does not have the time to
convince the people of our position.
I certainly hope that the Liberals are not successful in
their attempts to do this, because if they do, it will be your
voice which is stifled.
The voice of the people of Cariboo-Chilcotin must be
heard, because if it is not, your lives will be run from Ottawa.
The Prime Minister wishes to concentrate power in Central
Canada, because that is where he gets his votes.
British Columbia is simply a nuisance, a place that will
not co-operate with his plans.
Many people come to me and say that-Ottawa does not
listen, that the government does not care about
Westerners. If the Prime Minister gets his way now, then I
am sure that you will find that Ottawa will be stone deaf in
the future.
The time to be heard is now, while your voice still counts
for something in the capital. i
Between India, Pakistan
mug g on increase
Smuggling is on the increase
in the Punjab along
the border with Pakistan.
Senior officers of the
Punjab police, the B.S.F.
and the Central Excise and
Customs recently agreed to
intensify patrolling along
the State's international
border.
The Punjab government
has decided to select police
officers who are known for
their integrity and efficiency
for appointment as Station
House Officers in the
border belt.
According to reports
there is a spurt in smuggling
in the border region of
Amritsar district. Smugglers
there have well-knit
and trained groups. They
also have links with financiers
in Delhi and other
metropolitan cities.
Gold and silver are now
smuggled to Pakistan. Thus
the 30-year-old trend stands
reversed. This is so because
the price of gold in the Gulf
countries is Rs. 1,800 for 10
gm as against Rs. 1,450 in
this country. Most of the
gold smuggled to Pakistan
is shipped or flown to the
Gulf countries.
Small quanitities of
whiskey are also smuggled
from this country to
Pakistan. The movement is
reported to be not very
large because it is a bulky
item. A bottle of the liquor
which costs Rs. 40 in India
is sold for Rs. 200 to Rs.
250 in Pakistan.
honoured with an honorary
69th Convocation held on
June 7 at Nagpur.
In his films like Kunku,
he had tried to portray
various social problems
before the people and the
way they could be solved.
In 'Apna Desh' he had
drawn attention to the
of independence. And most
of what he had predicted in
the film had come true.
Thanking the Nagpur
University for the honour
Shantaram said that such
social recognition for what
little he had been able to
necessary for inspiring not
only him but others with a
purposeful aim ip the industry.
Drinking and driving kills
In 1972, he set up the
become more simplified,
often stressing colour relationships
WOODARD
Today I walked down the
restored sidewalks and cobblestone
alleys of historic
Bastion Square in Victoria,
British Columbia.
A couple of days ago, I
walked through the Gastown
District of Vancouver, British
Columbia. This, too, is an
area of great historical significance,
and today is enjoying
a resurgence of popularity
and activity.
It's a national trend —
both in Canada and the United
States — recycling older
districts of major cities into
unique and highly atmospheric
shopping and tourist
centers. It's a formula that's
successfully injecting new
life into what was becoming
depressed chunks of real estate.
In Victoria's Bastion
Square, I probably walked
over the remains of execut
ed criminals who were buried
there many years ago.
There were many "bad
guys" in this area during the
gold rush years and whaling
and sealing eras of the 19th
century.
Miners and sailors were
the primary inhabitants of
the district. Many dubious
"business" deals were settled
in saloons, dance halls
and back alleys.
Some of this business involved
the sale or auctioning-off
of items that had
been stolen from ships attacked
on the high seas.
The same type of infamous,
but colorful, activity
prevailed in Vancouver's
