The Buffalo International Jewish Film Festival, now in its 26 th season, once again is pleased
to present for the community a diverse offering of high quality international Jewish-themed films.
The festival’s success over the years is due to the dedicated efforts of a volunteer screening committee.
Numerous films have been pre-viewed, critiqued and voted on to bring you a selection of the best
available films. Most of the films are non-commercial and have received awards, but such recognition
alone is not enough to deserve inclusion. We specifically strive for a unique variety that touches
upon many aspects of Jewish life and culture, and will appeal to a broad audience. We know that
those who attend this festival love cinema, and are discriminating in their taste. Therefore, artistic
merit must rank high as a consideration.
Certain familiar themes recur from year to year. These include the Jewish immigrant experience,
Jewish art and music, Jewish coming-of-age stories, and the Holocaust. This year’s selection
offers fresh, unusual and sometimes amusing takes on these themes, while also touching upon less
conventional themes, such as drug smuggling and funeral preparations.
This season our lineup includes films from Argentina, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany,
Greece, Israel, Japan, Mexico and the United States.
The Festival closes on Thursday evening with a gala celebration. As you enter the theatre you’ll
see sights of Israel on the big screen in celebration of Israel Independence Day. There will be
live music by local musicians, kosher hors d’oeuvres, snacks and desserts throughout the evening.
The feature-length lively documentary on the world-famous band, The Klezmatics has been a
crowd pleaser at Festivals around the world. So, plan to stay late and celebrate!
The Talmud says: “He who saves a single life saves the world entire”.
The story is based on the memories of Marga Spiegel. In her
Siegfried, and their little daughter Karin from 1943 until 1945,
centuries-old code of ethics. They risked their own lives, and if necessary, the lives of their families as
by a Klezmer super group!
Originally formed in 1986 in New York City’s East Village,
the Award-winning Klezmatics continue to push the
boundaries of Jewish music. Their albums and
repertoire include collaborations with Itzhak Perlman,
Chava Alberstein, Theodore Bikel, Nora Guthrie,
playwright Tony Kushner and most recently with koshergospel
sensation Joshua Nelson. We brought Joshua to
Buffalo at the very beginning of his career, remember?
The band has additionally reached millions of television viewers on PBS Great Performances,
Late Night With David Letterman, and BBC’S Rythms Of The World. In 2006, The Klezmatics won
a Grammy Award (World Music) for their first English language LP, “Wonder Wheel,” a collaboration
with the Woody Guthrie family.
The essence of a surviving tradition is its ability to re-examine and reinvent itself. The Klezmatics’
music is a dynamic bridge between the lost Shtetls of Eastern Europe and Jewish-Yiddish culture’s
continuing force today. This film is an intimate exploration of the band’s journey, and captures its
y Israel Horovitz
Directed Saul Elkin at Alleyway Theatre
May 5-May 29, 2011
Lebensraum (living space) by Israel Horovitz, one of America’s
most celebrated contemporary and produced playwrights,
is based on the fanciful and explosive premise that a German
Chancellor might, as an act of redemption, invite six million
Jews to relocate to Germany with promises of citizenship
and employment. This dramatic, daring and darkly comic
piece of theatre takes you from Boston to Bremerhaven,
from Israel to Australia to Berlin. It explores the possibility
of making restitution for the Holocaust. Theatrical and
inventive in its storytelling, with three actors playing over
40 sharply drawn characters, this story of love, economics,
revenge and forgiveness is guaranteed to get you talking.
