Re-defining & Restructuring a Community
As winter winds swirl outside our windows a whirlwind of activity is taking place inside our buildings.
The hardworking staff at your JCC is busy helping to define what our JCC Community will look like in future
years. We are planning for a collaborative set of buildings and programs which will incorporate a changing
population, different set of demands and opportunities for improved and expanded services to our members
and community.
In our last issue of the “Center Connection” you learned about our plans for a new day camp to be created
on 19 acres adjacent to the JCC and behind the Weinberg Campus. As the thought barriers about who owns
what and who is in charge come down, we are focusing on being member-centered. Our explorations and
discussions have taught us that there is a strong demand and need for a friendlier, more integrated space
which will foster programs for members of all ages. We will seek approvals for an expanded campus which
will have venues for public entertainment, community-building and recreation. Plans include enhancements
to the public space surrounding the bike path, the view of the creek, our connection to the nearby SUNY
Buffalo campus and more. Thought is being given to a possible enrichment of the plazas and roadways
which will link us to the Amherst Senior Center and Audubon Road.
Mutually beneficial programming for seniors at the Weinberg Campus is already taking place and will be
expanded over the next few years. Our planning efforts are no longer hampered by parochial thinking as we
consider the entire Amherst population as a target market for expansion and inclusion into the outstanding and
varied programming which we offer every day. Our future is bright and will shine brighter as we enhance our
efforts to serve more people, more fully and with increased optimism, generosity and good spirit. We’re glad
to have each of you along for this exciting ride.
Here’s an idea for a very large lukshen kugel
that reminds me of the good ones made by
members of my family. My Aunt Lil always
said that the secret to really good kugel
was adding twice as much cottage cheese
and sour cream as called for on the noodle
package. You can do the prep work for this in
about 15 minutes. I never actually timed the
baking. It was a huge hit at the Myers Family
Tel Aviv Café in October where you can find
traditional dishes like this on any given day.
Three 12 oz. bags of medium egg noodles
Two (32 oz.) containers of sour cream
Two (32 oz.) containers of cottage cheese
16 oz. ricotta cheese
1 cup of sugar
Two cups of craisins, dried cherries
or other favorite dried fruit
8 eggs
1 tablespoon of vanilla
Three table spoons of cinnamon
For topping:
1 lb. of sliced almonds
Cinnamon (plenty)
Sugar (don’t overdo it)
Preparation:
Par-boil the noodles, drain. Mix in all the other wet ingredients and put into a
greased, large aluminum roasting pan. Top with a mixture of the topping
ingredients and place small pads of butter around the surface of the kugel.
Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 90 minutes.
Baking time will vary.
Serves 36 people.
Summer 2013
Connection News
Special Update For Camp Centerland Campers
The highly anticipated Grand Opening of a NEW Camp Centerland, located adjacent to the JCC
Benderson Family Building, is currently scheduled for June 24, 2013!
Site Design, optimal placement of camp structures, activity areas, and access roads have been
carefully considered. The community can feel confident that the best and brightest from Clover
Management and Benderson Development are partnering to build a state of the art facility for the
entire community to enjoy. As we head into winter, plans now go to architects and engineers to be
perfected.
We are committed to being a construction free zone while camp is in session so we anticipate
a whirlwind of activity in the outdoor pool area, along the bike path, the Weinberg Campus access
road, and across the diversion channel at the first sign of spring.
Camp Centerland will continue to be dedicated to building a community for families of all
backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. We continue to be committed to providing a safe,
quality Jewish day camp experience for your child with the focus on fun, good
sportsmanship, and positive values.
Campers entering PK4-Grade 1 will have the option of attending camp M, W, F or M-F.
Camp will operate M-F for all other grade levels.
The Camp Centerland day is 9:00 am-4:30 pm. We will offer Express bus service from the
Holland Family Building as well as Extended Day options for families that need additional
care. The popular and innovative Discovery Camp program for older campers will provide
valuable opportunities to volunteer and socialize. This age group will spend 3 days at
camp and 2 days on field trips.
We look forward to unveiling drawings of a brand new, custom built climbing tower
structure that we intend to have operational for Summer 2013.
Swimming will remain a top focus with daily instructional and free swim. Plans for
wooded walking trails, nature stations, and an outdoor amphitheater are being finalized.
A wide variety of other traditional day camp activities like arts & crafts, music, drama,
and of course sports will also be incorporated into the day camp experience.
Campers will also have the opportunity to choose weekly hobby groups, or Chugim,
activities that a camper chooses to spend more time focusing on during certain times of
the day. They might include water polo, synchronized swimming, Storm Swim Team,
Maccabiah sports training, biking, newsletter/reporting, photography, ceramics,
cooperative games or a fitness circuit.
Weekly themes and special guests will help enrich the well-rounded camp program.
We are looking forward to a new camp season and have dedicated ourselves to operating
the best day camp in the Greater Buffalo area. We will go to great lengths to retain our
current energetic and devoted staff as well as recruit the best and most talented new
counselors. Please feel free to contact the Director of Day Camping Services, Lauren
(Cohen) Klenosky, at any time, with any questions that you might have at 204-2078 or
e-mail her at lklenosky@jccbuffalo.org.
Watch for announcements regarding a special winter camp event and online
registration coming soon.
We will provide updates on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/campcenterland
and our twitter feed @campcenterland in the coming weeks and months.
Children Aquatics
B H
Personal Training
We offer private swim lessons to meet your specific needs.
1:1 instruction allows the lesson to be tailored to your child.
Why Private Lessons?
Private lessons are the most efficient way to
learn how to swim. It is also the least expensive
way in the long run because skills can be tailored
to the individuals’ needs rather than a group
of 4 or more children. Learning how to swim
properly and smoothly is the route to one
of the healthiest forms of exercise for your
child and it is a skill that they can have for life!
Can I Request A
Certain Instructor?
Yes you can! While certain instructors
have limited availability, we do our best
to accommodate your request. We strive
to match students with instructors based
on availability, personality, and skills
expertise. However, not every first match
is perfect. If this is the case, you can speak to the
Aquatics Director about it any time to make a change.
I Need A Flexible Schedule,
Is That Ok?
Private lessons give us the freedom to work with you on
your schedule to find a time instructor that fits your
child’s needs.
• Trainers are available 7 days/week, morning, afternoon,
and evening.
• We also offer the option of having 2 children swim
simultaneously - either each with their own personal
instructor or in the form of semi-private lessons.
Semi-private lessons are an available option for children
who are friends or siblings of similar age and skill levels.
In other words, they can learn with a buddy, but still get
the 1:1 attention at a time that works for you!
• Children that are involved in our Early Childhood
or After school programs here at the JCC can
arrange to be brought to the pool for their
lesson during their regular program!
aquatics
What About Children With
Special Needs Or Considerations?
Yes! This is one of our favorite and most rewarding
specialties! We have trained adapted aquatic instructors.
Learning to swim is a great equalizer for all children.
What Age Can My Child
Start Taking Lessons?
We teach children of all ages and skill levels! We offer
private lessons beginning at 6 months up through the
teenage years. Our instructors have taught beginner
level swimmers to swim independently as young as the
age of 2 and work to develop strokes in children through
the high school competitive level.
Adult Aquatics
Personal Training
B H
aquatics
Does The JCC Offer Personal Training In The Pool For Adults?
Absolutely! Our Aquatics Personal Training can vary anywhere from
post-rehab, to water aerobics, or never been in the water swimmers
to competitive swimming.
Why Private Lessons?
Private lessons are the quickest most efficient way to accomplish
your goals in the pool. It is also the least expensive way in the
long run because skills can be tailored to the individuals’ needs
rather than a group. We have found that adults in particular
have such diverse mentalities about the pool, even at the same
relative skill level, that private lessons tend to work out much
better than group. Lessons are also available 7 days/week,
morning, afternoon, and evening so that you can find a time
that best fits into your personal schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
• I’m adult who has never learned to swim and I have
some fears about the water. Can I learn?
We have many success stories from adults who have learned
to swim! We find that adults benefit most from 1 hour
sessions 2-3 days a week. If you can’t commit to 2-3 days,
it is extremely useful if you practice between sessions.
• I’m comfortable in the water, but I would like to begin
using the pool to help me stay fit and I am unsure of
what to do. Can you help me out?
Our instructors range in expertise from great swim stroke
technicians to water aerobics extraordinaires. You may even
see a few familiar faces from the fitness floor! Whether you
would like to become a more efficient lap swimmer or
develop your cardiovascular fitness at any level of intensity
with water exercise and post-rehab, we can help you out!
• I participate in triathlons and I have been looking for
something to give me that competitive edge. Could you
help me out on my swim?
We hear this from triathlon participants all the time. Many go
into competitions as fabulous runners or bikers, but have never
really worked with a trainer on their swim. We have worked
with triathletes and other competitive swimmers on
everything ranging from stroke efficiency and technique to
pace and endurance.
What About Individuals With Special Needs Or Considerations?
Yes! This is one of our favorite and most rewarding specialties!
We have specially trained adapted aquatic instructors.
Learning to swim is a great equalizer for all.
Yoga 101
There are many different styles of yoga being taught and practiced today and it can be tough for a
• Hatha - Accessible to all fitness levels. Emphasis is on static stretching,
soft movements and breath exercises (pranayama). Enjoy guided relaxation at the
end of each class.
• Vinyasa - Classes offer students a greater challenge. Once postures are mastered,
students are taught to “flow” or transition their postures in a breath synchronized motion.
• YogaFit - This inclusive class is based on Beth Shaw’s YogaFit program. Students will be
lead through a warm up, sun salutations, work phase, standing balances and then cool down
with seated and supine work as well as deep stretching. Poses are linked to create strength,
flexibility, endurance and balance through a technique referred to as Vinyasa.
