I’d like to offer a formal welcome to the hundreds of individuals and families who have joined the JCC since our last
Center Connections was printed. On behalf of the nearly 12,000 individuals who can call the JCC their second home
we wish you many years of good health, great classes, cultural enrichment and meaningful friendships. You’ve joined
the JCC at a great time. We are 60 + years old and brand new. We are an intimate and close family and we are a
large community comprised of people from a wide variety of backgrounds. You can play cards, attend discussion
groups, learn to paint, learn to swim and learn to stay healthy in bright, clean and modern facilities. And there is
more-Early Childhood Education, After-School programs, swimming, camping, basketball, cycling, theatre and on
and on. We’re very glad you’re here.
A bold decision was taken by the JCC Board recently when we rejoined the JCC Association. We will once again be
able to learn from other JCC’s throughout North America about new programs, business practices and trends in each
of our areas of service. As a Buffalo JCC member you will have access to facilities throughout North America as a
guest by showing your Buffalo JCC membership card.
This Spring promises to be one of our best. With expanded offerings for members of all ages and abilities, we expect
both buildings to be very busy on a daily basis. Camp Centerland will be enrolling what we believe will be an even
larger group of lucky campers who will learn about nature, crafts, sports and more. A program of Jewish culture,
which is presented in a manner that is friendly to children of all faiths, will once again provide a spiritual foundation
that presents natural surroundings, a cooperative, fun and kind competitive spirit and a healthful summer experience.
If you haven’t enrolled your kids yet, please do so soon. Contact Stacey Block at 688-4114, ext. 346. And our Early
Childhood programs at both buildings will be offering Summer experiences that will help working parents and kids
who will be thrilled with their summer of fun.
As always, we look forward to hearing from you about positive experiences and areas where we can improve.
Member Mail
Dear Rick,
Al Lewis
Certified Personal Trainer
Holland Family Building
About two weeks ago, I was stricken at the JCC on Delaware. Actually, it was a
very serious condition that can be fatal in some cases. Fortunately, Al Lewis’
presence of mind and prompt action literally saved my life. He recognized the signs
of distress, immediately offered assistance and summoned help. I survived the
episode, courtesy of an ambulance ride to the emergency room at Gates Circle.
I’m back at the gym and it’s all good now.
More to the point, this letter is to bring to your attention the remarkable acts
performed by Al on this day. I know Al as a personable individual with a great
following as a trainer but this was above and beyond the call of duty.
It was a heroic moment worthy of recognition. I don’t think that a simple
gesture of appreciation on my part is sufficient in this circumstance. I would be
extremely pleased if you could do more, on behalf of the JCC, to recognize such an
exemplary conduct.
Best regards,
Rick’s Sweet & Sour Cabbage Soup
1 head of green cabbage, cut into 1” pieces
1 large onion or 2 medium onions
6 cloves garlic (minced)
1 lb. carrots, cut into 1” pieces
1 apple, cored, peeled & cut into small pieces
1 large handful of white raisins
8 dried apricots, cut into small pieces
1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 small can tomato paste
4 quarts of hearty broth or stock
(vegetable, turkey or beef)
3 bay leaves
Fresh dill, salt, white pepper to taste
¼ cup of cider or white vinegar
2 tablespoons of white sugar
Preparation:
Put the ingredients (except for the spices, vineagar & sugar) into pot and boil slowly
until done. Two hours should do the trick, don’t overcook. Loaded with vitamin C
and is low in calories this recipe will remind you of your grandmothers flat in North
Buffalo. If you made the stock you’ll need to remove the fat from the top of the pot,
strain the liquid and add back in the de-boned meat. The apples should disappear
into the broth. You can crush them with a spoon and the pectin will give the soup
body. The apricots will give it a great sour flavor and beautiful color. Adjust the
sweet/sour flavor with small amounts of vinegar and sugar. Serve with a dollop of
sour cream if pareve broth is used. ½ cup chopped parsley optional. Fresh rye bread
makes it a complete meal.
Summer Camps
Make Kids Resilient
Sending Children to a
Day Camp, Builds Resilience
Published on February 5, 2012 by Michael Ungar, Ph.D. in Nurturing Resilience
JCC SUMMER day camps
I recently spoke to 300 Camp Directors about how to make children more resilient to
stress. Summer camps, we discovered, are perfect places to help children optimize their
psychosocial development.
After all, summer camps are places where children get the experiences they need to bolster
their range of coping strategies. There are the simple challenges of learning how to go on a hike
or conquer a high ropes course. There are the much more complex challenges of getting along
with a new group of peers or learning how to ask for help. Camps help our children develop
great coping strategies when they provide the seven things all children need:
1) New relationships, not just with peers, but with adults other than their parents. Just think
about how useful a skill like that is: being able to negotiate on your own with an adult.
2) A powerful identity that makes the child feel confident in front of others. Your child may not be the
best on the ropes course, the fastest swimmer, or the next teen idol , but chances are that a good camp
counselor is going to help your child find something to be proud of that s/he can do well.
3) Camps help children feel in control of their lives. Children who experience themselves as competent will be
better problem-solvers in new situations long after summer has ended.
4) Camps make sure that all children are treated fairly. At camp they will both find opportunities to just be kids who
are valued for who they are. No camps tolerate bullying.
5) At camp kids get what they need to develop physically. Ideally, fresh air, exercise, a balance between routine and unstructured time, and all
the good food their bodies need.
6) Perhaps best of all, camps offer kids a chance to feel like they belong. All those goofy chants and team songs, the sense of common purpose
and attachment to the identity that camps promote go a long way to offering children a sense of being rooted.
7) Camps can offer children a better sense of their culture. It might be skit night, or a special camp program that reflects the values of the
community. Camps give kids both cultural roots and the chance to understand others who have cultures very different than their own.
That’s an impressive list of factors that good camping experiences provide our children. Camps can give our kids a spicy combination of experiences
that prepare them well for life. Add to that experience the chance for a child’s parents to reinforce at home what the child nurtures at camp, and
maybe, just maybe, we’ll find in our communities and schools amazing kids who show the resilience to make good decisions throughout their lives.
12 Spring Programs 2012

Children Aquatics
Personal Training
B
H
We offer private swim lessons to meet your specific needs.
1:1 instruction allows the lesson to be tailored to your child.
Why Private Lessons?
Private lessons are the most efficient way to
learn how to swim. It is also the least expensive
way in the long run because skills can be tailored
to the individuals’ needs rather than a group
of 4 or more children. Learning how to swim
properly and smoothly is the route to one
of the healthiest forms of exercise for your
child and it is a skill that they can have for life!
Can I Request A Certain Instructor?
Yes you can! While certain instructors
have limited availability, we do our best
to accommodate your request. We strive
to match students with instructors based
on availability, personality, and skills
expertise. However, not every first match
is perfect. If this is the case, you can speak to the
Aquatics Director about it any time to make a change.
I Need A Flexable Schedule,
Is That Ok?
Private lessons give us the freedom to work with you on
your schedule to find a time instructor that fits your
child’s needs.
• Trainers are available 7 days/week, morning, afternoon,
and evening.
• We also offer the option of having 2 children swim
simultaneously - either each with their own personal
instructor or in the form of semi-private lessons.
Semi-private lessons are an available option for children
who are friends or siblings of similar age and skill levels.
In other words, they can learn with a buddy, but still get
the 1:1 attention at a time that works for you!
• Children that are involved in our Early Childhood
or After school programs here at the JCC can
arrange to be brought to the pool for their
lesson during their regular program!
aquatics
What About Children With
Special Needs Or Considerations?
Yes! This is one of our favorite and most rewarding
specialties! We have trained adapted aquatic instructors.
Learning to swim is a great equalizer for all children.
What Age Can My Child
Start Taking Lessons?
We teach children of all ages and skill levels! We offer
private lessons beginning at 6 months up through the
teenage years. Our instructors have taught beginner
level swimmers to swim independently as young as the
age of 2 and work to develop strokes in children through
the high school competitive level.
Why the JCC
for Swim Lessons?
The JCC’s outdoor and indoor pool facilities
provide an environment where your child
can develop and refine their strokes and
build endurance. Our 25 yard pools are kept
at a temperature of 83-86 degrees, ideal for
your younger child to learn and stay warm.
We offer swim lessons of different varieties
to suit your children’s needs:
Unlike many other programs, our learn to
swim classes are taught by experienced
American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructors and are maintained at a 1:6
teacher to student ratio or lower, allowing
for maximum one to one instruction for your
child. These classes include Water Babies,
Basic Water Skills/Preschool Aquatics,
and Learn to Swim Levels 1-5. End of the
session report cards are provided to
indicate your child’s level and skill progress.
Free swim tests are provided for all new
participants to ensure proper placement.
Our Storm Swim Team program is
designed for kids interested in learning
competitive swim team skills in a fun and
relaxed environment. Participants are
broken up into groups of similar ages and
skill levels to best suit their needs.
We also offer private classes taught by
instructors with a wide range of expertise.
Our instructors specialize in areas like
getting toddlers comfortable in the water
for the first time, developing strokes for
middle school swim requirements, and
helping kids to excel on their competitive
swim teams, diving, water volleyball and
more! See Pages 13 and 17 for more
Adult Aquatics B H
Personal Training
aquatics
Does The JCC Offer Personal Training In The Pool For Adults?
Absolutely! Our Aquatics Personal Training can vary anywhere from
post-rehab, to water aerobics, or never been in the water swimmers
to competitive swimming.
Why Private Lessons?
Private lessons are the quickest most efficient way to accomplish
your goals in the pool. It is also the least expensive way in the
long run because skills can be tailored to the individuals’ needs
rather than a group’s. We have found that adults in particular
have such diverse mentalities about the pool, even at the same
relative skill level, that private lessons tend to work out much
better than group. Lessons are also available 7 days/week,
morning, afternoon, and evening so that you can find a time
that best fits into your personal schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
• I’m adult who has never learned to swim and I have
some fears about the water. Can I learn?
We have many success stories from adults who have learned
to swim! We find that adults benefit most from 1 hour
sessions 2-3 days a week. If you can’t commit to 2-3 days,
it is extremely useful if you practice between sessions.
• I’m comfortable in the water, but I would like to begin
using the pool to help me stay fit and I am unsure of
what to do. Can you help me out?
Our instructors range in expertise from great swim stroke
technicians to water aerobics extraordinaires. You may even
see a few familiar faces from the fitness floor! Whether you
would like to become a more efficient lap swimmer or
develop your cardiovascular fitness at any level of intensity
with water exercise and post-rehab, we can help you out!
• I participate in triathlons and I have been looking for
something to give me that competitive edge. Could you
help me out on my swim?
We hear this from triathlon participants all the time. Many go
into competitions as fabulous runners or bikers, but have never
really worked with a trainer on their swim. We have worked
with triathletes and other competitive swimmers on
everything ranging from stroke efficiency and technique to
pace and endurance.
What About Individuals With Special Needs Or Considerations?
Yes! This is one of our favorite and most rewarding specialties!
We have specially trained adapted aquatic instructors.
Learning to swim is a great equalizer for all.
Pesach Yom Hashoah Shavuot
Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt
over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance
of this holiday centers around a special service
conducted at home called the Seder (meaning
“order”) which includes a festive meal. At the
Seder, a book is read. This book is called the
Hagaddah, meaning “telling,” which contains
the order of prayers, rituals, readings and
songs for the Pesach Seder. The holiday
continues for 8
days when no
unleavened
foods shall
be eaten.
