We are committed to providing a safe, quality Jewish day camp experience for your child with a focus on fun, good sportsmanship, and positive values. We hope to welcome you this summer. super staff Lauren Cohen Camp Centerland Director Stacey Block Registrar Christine Dusher Assistant Director We hire and retain the very best! • Both the Director and Assistant Director work at the JCC all year long • There is always an on-site, licensed paramedic, LPN, or RN • CPR, First Aid, & AED certification required of all staff during pre-camp orientation • Energetic and devoted staff, many of whom work at the JCC during the school-year • Trained and certified specialists • On-going training in the areas of child development, supervision, & child safety activities • Zipline, 4 face climbing wall and low ropes course: We are the only camp in Erie County to offer all of these activities! • Twice daily swim with morning instruction by our Red Cross Certified Learn to Swim lifeguards • Wide variety of activities including sports, music, arts & crafts, nature, and Jewish Cultural Arts • Spirited Friday Shabbat celebrations and performances • Stay-lates, overnights, and weekly trips for older campers • Grades K-10, Mon-Fri/9:30 am-4:00 pm, register by the week (min 2 weeks) Available for an additional fee: • Extended care hours (Buffalo, Getzville, & Centerland) • Birthday celebrations at camp • Extended summer vacation camp (8/20 through the beginning of school) • Hot lunch teen options Discovery Camp is an innovative program that combines all the fun of being a camper with valuable volunteer opportunities and fun field trips designed to strengthen leadership and self-confidence. A highlight of the program is a 3 day/2 night out-of-camp overnight to a State Park. Jr. Discovery-Grade 6 4 days at Camp Centerland with one weekly field trip. Discovery-Grades 7 & 8 Become part of a real social network and create connections to last a lifetime. Campers enjoy 3 days at camp and 2 weekly field trips. Sr. Discovery-Grade 9 & 10 Begin the transition into adulthood with increased responsibility. Spend 4 days in camp and enjoy one weekly field trip. Work with younger campers, specialty counselors, and participate in leadership initiatives and general activities as a group. CIT-Grade 10 CITs will learn basic information on ‘kid relating’ skills, child development and how to lead games. Summer Camps Make Kids Resilient Sending Children to a Day Camp, Builds Resilience Published on February 5, 2012 by Michael Ungar, Ph.D. in Nurturing Resilience JCC SUMMER day camps I recently spoke to 300 Camp Directors about how to make children more resilient to stress. Summer camps, we discovered, are perfect places to help children optimize their psychosocial development. After all, summer camps are places where children get the experiences they need to bolster their range of coping strategies. There are the simple challenges of learning how to go on a hike or conquer a high ropes course. There are the much more complex challenges of getting along with a new group of peers or learning how to ask for help. Camps help our children develop great coping strategies when they provide the seven things all children need: 1) New relationships, not just with peers, but with adults other than their parents. Just think about how useful a skill like that is: being able to negotiate on your own with an adult. 2) A powerful identity that makes the child feel confident in front of others. Your child may not be the best on the ropes course, the fastest swimmer, or the next teen idol , but chances are that a good camp counselor is going to help your child find something to be proud of that s/he can do well. 3) Camps help children feel in control of their lives. Children who experience themselves as competent will be better problem-solvers in new situations long after summer has ended. 4) Camps make sure that all children are treated fairly. At camp they will both find opportunities to just be kids who are valued for who they are. No camps tolerate bullying. 5) At camp kids get what they need to develop physically. Ideally, fresh air, exercise, a balance between routine and unstructured time, and all the good food their bodies need. 6) Perhaps best of all, camps offer kids a chance to feel like they belong. All those goofy chants and team songs, the sense of common purpose and attachment to the identity that camps promote go a long way to offering children a sense of being rooted. 7) Camps can offer children a better sense of their culture. It might be skit night, or a special camp program that reflects the values of the community. Camps give kids both cultural roots and the chance to understand others who have cultures very different than their own. That’s an impressive list of factors that good camping experiences provide our children. Camps can give our kids a spicy combination of experiences that prepare them well for life. Add to that experience the chance for a child’s parents to reinforce at home what the child nurtures at camp, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll find in our communities and schools amazing kids who show the resilience to make good decisions throughout their lives.
