Yoga 101<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many different styles <strong>of</strong> yoga being taught and practiced today and it can be tough for a<br />

beginners to figure out the differences. Although almost all <strong>of</strong> these styles are based on the same<br />

physical postures (called poses), each has a particular emphasis. This quick guide to the most<br />

popular types <strong>of</strong> yoga will help you figure out which class is right for you at the JCC.<br />

• Hatha - Accessible to all fitness levels. Emphasis is on static stretching,<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t movements and breath exercises (pranayama). Enjoy guided relaxation at the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> each class.<br />

• Vinyasa - Classes <strong>of</strong>fer students a greater challenge. Once postures are mastered,<br />

students are taught to “flow” or transition their postures in a breath synchronized motion.<br />

• YogaFit - This inclusive class is based on Beth Shaw’s YogaFit program. Students will be<br />

lead through a warm up, sun salutations, work phase, standing balances and then cool down<br />

with seated and supine work as well as deep stretching. Poses are linked to create strength,<br />

flexibility, endurance and balance through a technique referred to as Vinyasa.<br />

Yoga. Our relaxed group atmosphere promotes camaraderie while celebrating the individual<br />

and our experienced instructors do <strong>more</strong> than just lead a class. <strong>The</strong>y’re trained to assist with proper<br />

alignment and can help with any modifications to help you <strong>more</strong> fully experience the benefits <strong>of</strong><br />

your workout.<br />

We accept students <strong>of</strong> all fitness levels. No prior yoga experience is required.<br />

Our classes are tailored to assist students in achieving the maximum<br />

benefit from their yoga practice and allowing them to take their<br />

practice with them as they face the everyday challenges <strong>of</strong> life.<br />
