The common conditions that our members have are Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa but we also support people with lesser known ones and sight loss following retinal detachment. Retina NZ operates a telephone based peer support scheme and the number for this service which operates 7 days per week is 0800 233 833. None of the peer supporters are medically qualified, but each of them understands the daily reality of living with reduced vision and the challenges and opportunities it presents. Each peer supporter is a trained volunteer who is available to listen and to provide the caller with sources of further information. Retina NZ is able to provide local optometry practices with small business size cards which give the 0800 phone number and web site address, which can be given to patients who would benefit in knowing about our services. We can also provide Amsler grids for practices to distribute to patients to enable them to self monitor their eye condition. As a voluntary group, Retina NZ would appreciate either receiving an application from the practice to join Retina NZ or receiving a donation to cover the cost of the cards or grids and the postage. The annual membership for an optometrist would be $20 and would entitle the practice to receive a print copy of the Retina NZ quarterly newsletter which may be of interest to some patients and their families and could be left in the waiting room. Low vision phone advice is available via the 0800 555 546 phone line for those living outside the Auckland area. Our low vision Optometrist provides awareness and training for eye-health professionals and providers of services for older people eg. rest home staff. SLS is able to provide consultations on the visual environment particularly in facilities catering for older people where lighting is essential. We work in cooperation and collaboration with key service providers eg. Age Concern, Age Plus and Health Healthcare Equipment. We carry on the work of Professor Fred Hollows, a world-renowned Kiwi eye surgeon and humanitarian. Fred believed in giving a hand up, not a hand out, and we train local eye health workers to restore sight in their own communities. Every year Foundation-trained eye health workers perform thousands of sight-restoring surgeries at our clinics and through our surgical outreach program.
