level you’ll practice intensive drills for practical conversation skills; at the intermediate
and advanced levels, more sophisticated conversation and speech
drills are part of the program. Newspaper articles, TV news, and JLPT preparation—as
well as Japanese corporate culture studies—are also covered.
Students include business people, corporate trainees, diplomats, family
members of working expats, spouses of Japanese and other adult learners
with various cultural backgrounds. There is an even distribution of students
from Europe, North America, East Asia, and other areas of the world.
Founded in 1967 by the International Education Center (IEC), JLI is conveniently
located in central Tokyo, a three-minute walk from Yotsuya station, in
a recently-constructed, earthquake-proof building.
In addition to Japanese lessons, IEC provides a variety of English-language
education programs and engages in various international exchanges.
Activities include the International Speech Contest in Japanese, broadcast on
NHK, and a diversity of other cultural forums, including the Japan-America
Student Conference, which was originally founded in 1934.
Prospective students are invited to contact JLI to discuss which course is
appropriate for them, or to stop in to check the facilities. Everyone is welcome
to sit and observe classes, too.

OLJ Language Academy
has had a sizeable number
of students since opening
doors back in 1985. During
more than 25 years,
over 3,000 people from 51
cou nt r ies have passed
through. Naturally, this
has helped OLJ hone its
system to full strength by
using students’ experiences
to keep improving.
In 2011, OLJ moved from Aoyama to the hip surroundings of Shibuya. The
new school is clean and comfortable, and just three minutes walk from the
east exit of Shibuya station. OLJ is not a big school, which has the advantage
of promoting a nice, cozy atmosphere and a great relationship between students
and teachers. Each class has fewer than 15 students so everyone has
plenty of chance to speak Japanese during lessons.
OLJ can provide lessons for Japan residents with visas such as working,
artist, dependent, etc. Several students have attended the Intensive Japanese
Course (five days a week in the morning or afternoon) and successfully
improved from beginner level to N2 in the Japanese Language Proficiency
Test—within just one year.
For beginners, OLJ uses its original textbook Terry and Mai, which teaches
by using different daily situations. This helps students learn by using their
imagination—which makes the Japanese easier to remember.
OLJ also provides private lessons at the school or at your office. Ask your
HR department if your company has provisions for helping employees with
Japanese language learning.
