American curriculum as foundation for <strong>the</strong> core subjects of Language<br />

<strong>Art</strong>s/Reading, Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, Science and Social Studies—all adapted to<br />

international content standards. This academically challenging curriculum<br />

provides ample opportunities for students to acquire new skills and<br />

knowledge so as to express <strong>the</strong>mselves in unique ways. Integrated into <strong>the</strong><br />

curriculum are classes in physical education/swimming, music, art, computer<br />

skills, and Japanese. Use of <strong>the</strong> YMCA Wellness Center facilities, with<br />

its two pools, full-size gymnasium, and rooftop tennis courts, are available<br />

for use with TYIS programs.<br />

While English is <strong>the</strong> language of instruction, native ability is not<br />

required. Never<strong>the</strong>less, all incoming students are screened to determine<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir level. Based on score results and teacher/administrative input, students<br />

may be placed in <strong>the</strong> EAL (English as an Additional Language)<br />

program until <strong>the</strong>y can perform adequately in <strong>the</strong> mainstream classroom<br />

on a full-time basis. The aim of EAL is to develop listening, speaking, and<br />

reading and writing skills to a degree that <strong>the</strong> student can engage with <strong>the</strong><br />

during a festival.<br />
