The building is also ecologically friendly and utilises
modern ‘windcatcher’ systems for passive ventilation
and rainwater harvesting which will reduce the school’s
carbon footprint.
The building also has modern underfloor heating systems
which help throughout the winter months.
The building work went without a hitch thanks to the
close collaboration with the contractors (Wynnes) and
Conwy Local Authority.
The new building is a huge asset to the school, students
and staff and enhances the learning experiences of all.
Healthy Schools Scheme
in June 2010 the school completed the 10
phases in the Healthy Schools Scheme in
Conwy County.
The scheme is a 3 year programme which aims to
develop certain areas of the schools environment
as well as the physical, social and emotional well
being of staff and pupils.
The first year of the process saw Eirias achieve
the one year award for looking at the emotional
development of students; food and nutrition
and the partnerships the school has with the
community.
In the second year, the focus has been to raise
awareness of the importance of physical activity
and looking after the environment. It was also
the turn of the staff to have a look at their own
well being.
The final challenges focused on personal and
social education and health and safety. The
pastoral scheme of work continues to develop
with strong year teams and the introduction of a
student led group, helping teachers prepare and
deliver lessons.
School Houses
The Heads of House for Gwynedd Falcons,
Glyndwr Eagles, Llywelyn Hawks and
Madog Kites are once again ready to get the
school moving with the launch of the first
house event this year.
w w w . e i r i a s . c o n w y . s c h . u k
The school is now looking forward to embark
on the next challenge in completing the
seven phases that lead to the Healthy Schools
Schemes National Quality Award.
Restaurant Facilities
The school runs a cashless system, where
students are given swipe cards that can be
topped up by cheque or cash daily, weekly or
monthly.
Free meal allowances are topped up
automatically on the cards.
HEALTHY EATiNG iS ENCoURAGED.
The choices are:
• a traditional counter with a
meat or vegetarian choice
• a pasta bar
• a salad bar
• a selection of sandwiches
The average cost of a two course lunch is £1.85.
Students who bring packed lunches eat in the
school hall and may also purchase drinks, fruit,
cookies etc on their cards.
T10 and T20 give the students the opportunity
to enter a prize draw to win an ipod touch
when they reach 10 house points.
Students in KS4 and KS5 have the chance to
put their ideas forward as Key stage of House
helping to organise different activities such as
vertical assemblies, friendship activities and of
course ‘Eirias’s Got Talent’ in conjunction with
the school’s Senior Team.
Holidays in Term time
Peer Mentors
At Eirias we do not approve of holidays taken in
term time. We feel very strongly that the benefits
of a holiday taken in term time are far inferior to
the benefit of the education that we provide.
The staff at Eirias work hard to ensure the effective
delivery of all aspects of the students’ education,
and it is not possible to catch up on this once
missed, despite any efforts made to copy up.
We are not obliged to authorise holidays and
will certainly not authorise holidays under the
following circumstances:
All students at Ysgol Eirias have the option of
extra support in the form of Peer Mentoring.
Pupils from all year groups have the opportunity
to meet regularly with older pupils to discuss
issues pertaining to organisation skills, settling in,
friendship, homework and exam pressure.
• Where attendance of the
student is less then 94%
• Where the student is not accompanied
by the parent or guardian
• Where holidays are close to or
include examination periods
• Where the time exceeds 10 school days
• Where leave of absence is
not permitted by the school,
. . . Innovation . . .
unauthorised absence is recorded
S.O.R.T.E.D Specialist operations and
Research Team for Educational Development
A group of pupils in year 10 and 11 have formed
the self named ‘S.o.R.T.E.D’ team that is focusing
on the development of personal and social
education in school.
The pupils have spent time developing their
skills and understanding in the area by observing
lessons, completing staff and pupil questionnaires
and receiving training from the LEA. As a result the
pupils presented their findings to the Leadership
team and will now be spending time assisting
teachers in keeping pastoral lessons up to date
and relevant in the coming years, starting with
leading staff training sessions and meeting parents
We have Peer Mentors in years 9 – 12 who
have been trained and are therefore more than
prepared to deal with mentees. These respected
students wear house coloured badges and are a
point of support all around the school.
and the community during the schools’ Open
day. The intention of the pupils is not only to
develop their own skills in problem solving,
communication, and working with people of all
ages, but, in their own words, to;
“
To bring the whole school together, to fundamentally
enhance pupil commitment and performance.
To transform teacher-pupil relationships to be more active
and collaborative.
To address large issues in a positive way with students’
voices being heard and peer learning from each other.
School Council
Eirias has a thriving School Council which meets
during the school day, once every half term.
A boy and girl from each year group is elected to
serve on the Council for at least one year. Minutes
from each meeting are taken and circulated to
all tutor groups. The minutes also appear on the
school website. The Council is chaired by a senior
member of staff and has its own constitution. The
School Council is a visible symbol of the School’s
commitment to student voice and democracy.
It is an agent of change in the school and has
been involved in the appointment of staff,
improving the school environment, promoting
Healthy Schools and initiatives that lead to an
improvement in student learning.
Rewards at Ysgol Eirias
The school aims to provide high standards of
behaviour, self discipline and learning through
positive encouragement and reward. As well as
praise in class and through written comments in
exercise books, students are rewarded in a variety
of ways.
In years 7 and 8, students collect merits for
good work and behaviour and there are termly
competitions among the tutor groups for the
largest number of merits collected. Certificates for
attendance are also awarded. Stickers are awarded
for exceptional achievements. In Years 9, 10 and 11,
students receive commendations through stickers in
the student planner. Recognition postcards are also
used and are posted home to students. Postcards
Ysgol Eirias believes there is no justification
whatsoever for bullying behaviour and it should
not be tolerated in any form. Differences of race,
religion, gender, sexual orientation, ability are
absolutely repudiated as reasons for bullying.
We at Eirias take all forms of bullying seriously and
ask our students to sign an anti-bullying pledge.
School Charges and Remission
The Governing Body is required by the
Education Reform Act, 1996, section 449-462,
together with the Welsh Office Circular 4/89 to
establish a Charging Policy that conforms to the
requirements of the legislation.
General Principles
No charge can be made for admission to
Ysgol Eirias.
No charge would be made for entry into any
recognised public examinations provided the
students have been prepared within the school.
If, however, the student fails to attend, or fails to
prepare for such an examination without good
reason, the parent or guardian may be charged
the examination fees.
Charges will be made where students wish to
re-sit examinations.
Voluntary contributions may be requested by the
Governing Body to cover the costs of any visit/
activities in school and outside of it, provided these
experiences fall outside the National Curriculum
Where charging is permissible, in accordance with
the legislation, the Governing Body may use its
discretion whether to make any charge.
In practical subjects or project work, a charge for
materials or ingredients may be requested in cash
or kind, on the condition that parents or guardians
have agreed in advance, and that they wish to own
the finished artefact/product. Students should not
be excluded if no contribution is made.
Where school property has been damaged,
payment may be requested.
Music tuition is paid direct to the school office.
