PYDS - Creating Change Agents
The Purkal Youth Development Society is in a small village in the foothills of the Himalayas,
Uttarakhand, India. We enrich lives of poor rural youth through education and empower women
through skills development; whilst preserving the beautiful Himalayan environment and local
culture.
Sustainability
we are here
Yuva Shakti (Youth Power) has focused on intensive education for local rural youth since 2001.
Stree Shakti (Women Power), has empowered local women through income generation since 2003.
Philosophy and approach
We believe that the children under our care will become leaders in their communities in their
own right; become Change Agents influencing many others gradually over time. 100% of Stree
Shakti sales value is returned to Self Help groups and the immeasurable impact of multi facetted
growth within this supportive environment see the women gaining control of their lives and family
future.
PYDS works with a narrow, intensive focus. We concentrate on a small number of villages and
people to make large scale positive change in tune with local community desire. See blog
http://pyds.wordpress.com for more on our philosophy.
Our Programmes in Summary
Programme 1 Yuva Shakti:
Education of rural youth living in and
around this area is carried out through two
programmes:
The Scholarship Programme for Rural Youth
(SPRY) has our children being sponsored to a
school outside our village. All their expenses
for attending the school, such as school fees,
books, uniforms, busing to school etc. are met
by the Society. All these children also receive
comprehensive mentoring at our Learning
Centre every day after school to help them
excel.
The Day Boarding Programme involves the
children spending 10 hours each day, 6 days a
week over the entire year. Attention is given
comprehensively to nutrition, Health and to
Learning. The Curriculum administered is
holistic and encompasses physical, emotional,
intellectual, and social health. All teaching is
child centered and encourages the children to
think and question and learn through enquiry.
Programme 2 On To Life:
This project is aimed at assisting the children
who have graduated from our school to
transition successfully to a successful, selfsufficient
useful adulthood. We provide: a
small corpus for financial support and loans;
career counselling; assistance with placement
for work experience;and help in admission to
professional institutions.
Programme 3 Stree Shakti:
The women of Stree Shakti produce
handcrafted quilts for sale. The women work
in SHGs under our banner. The aim is to
support these groups and extend to them the
advantages of intellectual property rights,
infrastructure, organisation and management
free until they have these skills. The attempt
is to help build scale and a brand over time
and hand it over to the SHG’s in due course.
Conscious efforts are made to cultivate skills
among the skill-less and help the development
of the individuals through training to help them
into becoming managers of the organisation.
Programme 4: Shishu Shakti:
Young mothers are amongst the greatest in
need of our women’s empowerment program.
To help this, a Seven hour long Early Childhood
Centre has been inaugurated and is currently
operative
Two, three and four year groups now receive
care, love, education, lunch and snacks, along
with immunisation and health care.
Programme 5:
Community Development:
We also act directly in the local community
through education, infrastructure
development, health and hygiene.
The Year in Review: The Secretary’s report
Firstly I wish to thank all of our friends and
supporters. Your generosity and encouragement
allows us to keep providing our important
services in this sometimes forgotten part of
the world. We are aiming to create leaders
of change in their communities – women and
children who can fill their potential to the
fullest. Your support keeps the wheels of this
Society turning.
The year has been one marked by several
significant developments.
In Yuva Shakti, we came to the conclusion
that it was important for us to shift to a
Day Boarding arrangement if we needed
to accomplish the goal of excellence in
establishing learning skills among our children.
This decision was helped by the very satisfying
experiment that we undertook with our BTTP
(Bus Them To Purkal) children over the earlier
two years. The reports on these children
amply prove that given intimate care and
attention every one of these kids can become
outstanding.
In pursuit of this idea, we received recognition
from the Uttarakhand Government for the
Primary classes and for Classes 6, 7 and 8
(English medium). A fee of Rs 50,000 was paid
to the Government was paid for this purpose.
We have built 3 additional classrooms and a
teachers common room to accommodate the
additional need. To supervise the teaching
Programme better, we have appointed three
coordinators and also Mrs Kusum Kohli, a very
experienced teacher as a Chief Co-ordinator. A
robust organisation structure is thus evolving.
This year, we better shaped the activities
that we use for identifying learning potential
in young people seeking admission into our
Programme. Manish Chandel lead a team
of teachers over 5 Sundays in assessing and
administering specially designed activiteis for
the purpose. We are now definitely moving
towards the goal of providing every necessary
input to a selected few from disadvantaged
backgrounds to help them move toward the
realisation of their complete potential, and
thus helping their communities flourish.
The dream of broadening the curricula at
the school to become holistic and complete
became possible during the current year with
our providing time in our timetable for sports,
yoga, music, dance and arts. Exposure to these
disciplines has helped shape the attitudes
of the children and helped them grow into
excellent young adults. An open air theatre
space has been developed on the terrace of the
Stree Shakti building.
We have had the good fortune of being
associated with iDiscoveri and now actively
implement their XSEED Programme. Based on
the philosophy that nobody can be taught but
only helped to learn, it has brought about a
sea-change in the learning that is happening at
the School. The training offered by The Global
Education and Leadership Foundation has built
leadership skills among both the teachers and
the students.
For the future, we are hoping to run all
classes with the affiliation of theCentral Board
of Secondary Education, but this will need
additional infrastructure. The Society has
paid Rs 50,000 and applied for a No Objection
Certificate from the local government.
Teacher training has now become a continuous
process and we have been taking full advantage
of the structure provided by the XSEED
Programme. A volunteer, Mr. Harwant Singh, an
Ex-teacher with PYDS and now a trainer with
The Bharati Foundation conducted a nine day
workshop which set the tone for the Academic
Year 2010-11. Teacher attrition is still a serious
problem but we are introducing measures that
can change this experience over time.
All these ideas are resulting in increased costs
and we have taken certain conscious steps to
improve our credibility among the corporate
and other donors. Streamlining our governance
practices and the several steps taken to
improve transparency has resulted in Charity
Aid foundation providing us accreditation. We
received the Social Bravery Award from Godfrey
Phillips. We are progressing with obtaining the
support and approval of Give India and the
Credibility Alliance. We have begun to record
Outcomes for every new idea launched by us
and have Measures to evaluate these at the end
of their implementation. We do believe that
these steps will improve the possibilities of our
receiving donor support in the coming year, and
hence continuing our work.
The Year in Review: The Secretary’s report
As for Stree Shakti, we launched a five part
strategy to help the initiative early in the year
and have made progress with each of them.
The Marketing Programmes have resulted in
sales of Rs. 21,06,000/- for the year 2009-2010
as against the record of Rs. 15,20,955/- for the
year ended 2008-09. We had a very successful
exhibition at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi
in October 2009. More definite marketing
initiatives have now been formulated with the
additional experience gained over this year.
A key part of our marketing strategy is a
Display and Sale Centre which was formally
declared open by the Governor of the State on
7th March 2010.
A formal subsidised training scheme, supported
by a full time trainer, was launched for the
purpose of skilling the girls from the village and
this has strengthened the work force of Stree
Shakti. Two volunteers from the UK stayed
with us for a month to help the girls learn
embroidery and a new skill known as Locker
Needle Craft.
To assist the women of the operation, an
Early Child Learning Centre, Shishu Shakti was
constructed, furnished and launched in early
March 2010. The Organisational structure of
the Division was improved with the addition of
a Marketing Executive, an accountant, a store
keeper and an additional designer.
A new kitchen has been built for the
convenience of the women of this division.
We are hoping that all these improvements will
yield dividends during the forthcoming year.
Our aim in the upcoming year is to increase
the number of partners in our Enterprise and
ensure a sustainable and robust future for our
beneficiaries. We are hoping that before the
end of the coming year the number of women
benefitting will increase to atleast a hundred
and that our sales during the current year will
grow by a further 30%.
Blessings (Sometimes known as
Achievements.)
Yuva Shakti (Youth Power): Decision to
concentrate on academically motivated
students among the economically
disadvantaged, through an excellent education
programme, so that professional success
is achieved. This is how the Day Boarding
Programme has been conceived and launched.
This along with the SPRY Programme enables
us to bring about social change with these
successful students serving as role models and
defining what is possible.
The good fortune of being connected with
two organisations that aim at developing the
personality and the holistic education of the
child are undoubtedly to be counted among
the blessings of the year. We are referring to
our contracts with The Global Education and
Leadership Foundation and idiscoveri, Gurgaon.
Stree Shakti (Women Power): Introduction of a
5 part strategy for Stree Shakti development.
Already we have been able to implement part
of this strategy.
Shishu Shakti (Child Power): A well conceived
plan for the care of the young belonging to the
women of Stree Shakti through an initiative
that provides Health, Nutrition, Immunization
and Learning has been launched and this is
meant to make a quality difference to the
ability of young women of the community to
work and earn.
Display and Sales Centre: As a part of the
Marketing strategy, a tastefully designed
Display Centre is now in operation. This Centre
is meant to exhibit all the goods created by
Stree Shakti.
Challenges
We have learnt that it is better for us to have
the children coming to us on a Day Boarding
basis since the children will then save the
travelling time to the school and will not
repeat the work both at the School and at the
Centre. Our learning and guidance methods
are more effective (in line with our own
philosophical approach) and the children are
also able to go home at 5.30PM every day.
Their time with us will permit more sports and
more time for the development of their other
skills. We also do not increase our expenses
significantly since we already employ most of
the teachers necessary.
RETURN TO CONTENTS / PYDS 8
The Year in Review: The Secretary’s report
Fund raising: This new initiative now implies
expenses for the boarding of the children,
medical facilities and bussing apart from
tutoring. We have been sustained in the past
through donations from individuals and the
last year saw the addition of several names to
the list of our Friends. Conscious efforts are
now being made to collate this information
and cultivate these friends by keeping them
regularly informed of the progress that we are
making. The credibility building exercises that
we have currently undertaken has also perhaps
resulted in our ability to attract Corporates and
other Trusts into our support structure.
School recognition: Encouraged by the success
of our BTTP (Bus Them To Purkal) experiment
we launched our school Programme over a year
ago. We had then received the approval of
the Uttarakhand Government for the Primary
School section. We have since applied for
and obtained their approval for the conduct
of Classes6, 7 and 8 in the English Medium.
We propose to commence these classes in
early April 2010. We are now in the process
of seeking the approval of the CBSE for the
managing of classes 9 and 10 under their aegis
at our school.
HEALTH
PYDS created a record keeping system and
commenced making complete health records
for each child for up to 12 years. Dr. Prashant
Singh, Dental Surgeon and Dr. Vinod Arora, Eye
Surgeon kindly screened each child, with any
necessary further attention given as required.
Dr. Anju Arora has been kind enough to conduct
a physical examination of every child in the
scheme. Local Ayurvedic doctor Dr. Geetu had
accepted responsibility for caring for all PYDS
program participants, voluntarily committed
to visiting twice a week. She was supported
during the year by Dr. Sebastian, a Norway
qualified physician living in Dehra Dun. A nurse
is now in attendance on campus every working
day. Facilities for bathing are now available
at the school for those children without a
bathroom at home. Toothbrushes and paste are
given to every child.
EDUCATIONAL METHOD
We are not providing ‘some’ education but
rather, attempting the very best possible. The
education is holistic and comprehensive.
Our programmes incorporate all aspects of the
child’s welfare, including nutrition, healthcare,
value-education, learning resources and a
child-centred, active approach to learning.
Our curriculum covers not only academics,
but also a strong extra-curricula component
of yoga, dance, music, and exposure to the
outside world. This helps build well-rounded
individuals. We have the active support of
iDiscoveri, Gurgaon in implementing this
Programme. This was sponsored by COLORS
Bombay to mark their first anniversary. Review
and homework time is within class hours,
freeing the children after school for play and
other activities. They no longer have to carry a
heavy bag home each night, since all books are
stored at school.
LEADERSHIP
As well as participating in the Global Education
and Leadership Foundation activities, eight
children were elected ‘Torch Bearers’ for the
four houses: Perseverance, Youth, Discipline
and Self-Control; signifying qualities students
are seeking to cultivate.
FACILITIES
An increase in female students saw the need
for additional toilets. Thanks to the efforts
of ten donors, led by Ms. Madhu Bhaduri new
modern facilities were constructed in response.
Three new classrooms have been built for the
2010 school year thanks to long term supporter
Elan Computing UK.
SPORTS AND CULTURE
Annual Sports Day was celebrated on the May
13, 2009 with enthusiastic participation from
all the four houses. The competence of our
Basket ball and volley ball teams is steadily
growing.
Traditional Hindustani music and Kathak
dance classes are an important part of
our curriculum. A drama highlight saw
twenty children take in the pleasure of two
Shakespearian plays, Macbeth and A Mid
Summer Nights Dream, performed by Wide Aisle
Productions at Kasiga School.
The first day of the New School that we have
now commenced, was marked by six plays in
English by all our students in classes 3 to 6 and
Class 10. Two volunteers from France, who are
very experienced teachers of English, helped
the children prepare for the plays by designing
and scripting them and then training each of
the participants to deliver their lines faultlessly
and with feeling. It was a remarkable success.
TALKS
• Students received benefit from many talks
during the year including:
• Mr. Alok. B.Lal, DGP of our State; Drug
Addiction Management.
• Major Gen S.M. Mahanty; “Making a Man of
VISITS
Each year our students visit local places of
interest like museums, Institutes, factories,
parks and monuments. In addition to twicemonthly
excursions to expose our students to
the wider world, we have had several major
trips
May: Many of our children learnt a great deal at
Navdanya Farm. A yeoman service institution,
they conserve local traditional seeds and
encourage organic farming.
November: Children visited Assan Barrage to
January: The annual student camp to Gujarat.
Thanks to the assistance that we received
from the army, almost 55 students and staff
from PYDS travelled through Gujarat seeing
and learning the history and the geography of
the State. The highlight of their visit was their
being face to face with a Pride of lions, in the
Gir National Park, mountains of butter at the
Amul factory and their visit to an Oil refinery at
Jamnagar. A presentation on the entire visit is
available at http://pydstrips.wordpress.com
TEACHER DEVELOPMENT
Teachers received thorough training in the
iDIscoveri teaching and learning methods in
an interactive workshop over 4 days and a
two refreshers of 2 days. It is an integrated
Teacher Training and Curriculum Programme,
and is aimed at Innovative teaching and
experiential learning. Toolkits are provided
for creating an interactive and child centered
learning environment, based on discovery and
experience.
Nine whole days in March were used by all
the teachers of Yuva Shakti and Sishu Shakti
for a work shop on teacher training. The nine
day workshop conducted by a volunteer, Mr.
Harwant Singh, concentrated on reinforcing
the concept of helping children ‘Learn’, rather
than ‘Teach’ them.
Our teachers are implementing excellent
classroom management techniques and
planning based on this approach.
Mr. Charles Cripps English teaching specialist
(England) spent two mornings with our teachers
on approaches to spelling, diction and reading.
My Favourite Person – Stories By Two 5Th Class Children
Jyoti joined PYDS as a day boarder
in January 2008
“My favourite person is my mother. She is very
beautiful. She is very thin and quite tall. She
has long hair. She loves to watch the television
and hearing songs. She looks beautiful when
she wears a sari. She goes to Stree Shakti and
learns to make different kinds of things like
bags, pencil bags, quilts and baby quilts. She
is a very hard working woman. While we are
sleeping she works to earn money. She is a very
kind and forceful woman.
I love her because of her nature. She has told
different kinds of stories to us of what she has
done in her life. She told us she was from a
very poor family and they were not able to get
enough to eat. They were also not able to get
good clothes. When she was 10 years old her
father left and then only her mother had to
earn for them. This story makes us very upset.
We always keep asking questions from her,
and she tells us many stories like that. She
cooks very delicious food. She always fulfils our
needs. She is one of my favourite friends.”
Vaibav joined PYDS as a day boarder
in January 2008
My favourite person is my mother because she
helps me to do my work on time. She cooks
food that I ask her to. On holi, when I was
drenched she gave me clean and dry clothes.
She jokes and reads funny Hindi stories. When
I have fever, she brings me medicine and cooks
me soup. She does all the house work and I
help her.
She is very beautiful and kind. She loves to go
to a marriage party, and to natural places like
a forest, and to see animals in a zoo. I know
that she is suffering from many diseases. I want
to help her by becoming a software engineer. I
want to give her all the happiness in the world
and to show her the Taj Mahal. She wants to go
to see the Taj Mahal.
She loves to give everyone happiness. When I
grow up I will build a house with a garden. She
is the very, very best mother in the world. I
want to grow up like a tree and give her fruits.
She cares for me like a baby. She likes to see
ghost movies.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Mrs. Dayita Dutta, Vice-Principal of the
Wellham Girls School, kindly conducted Career
Counseling for senior classes.
Six of the 2008 Class 12th graduates and 9 from
2009 were placed for work experience during
their summer holidays.
We now have some of our old students
stepping in to help at the workplace. They are
working in a wide range of roles: mentoring,
teaching computing, administration and library
management and supply stability to our work.
All of the children at PYDS benefit from seeing
success stories in action. Their brothers,
sisters, cousins and neighbours are leading the
way in showing that dedication to study can
transform lives. For many of our children and
their families this is a brand new experience.
The children who have graduated from PYDS
are often the first people in their families or
communities to move into higher education,
and higher level employment possibilities.
Programme 3: Stree Shakti
Empowering rural women through
training and infrastructure for
producing handmade home and
fashion products.
2009/2010 saw the creation and
implementation of a five part strategy to
develop and strengthen our Stree Shakti
division. Seeking to expand the activities
and sales of Stree Shakti to benefit a greater
number of women, we have had major
successes so far in the areas of marketing and
childcare facility provision.
The programme is divided into 5 sub projects,
each of which can be successfully implemented
independently, but which act to support each
other
IMPACT:
80 women now work in their 5 Self Help
Groups. The Self Help Groups have grown
organically and it is our dream that with
time they will become fully self reliant and
independent – in effect micro-businesses.
Skills have been developed and lessons in
organisation and management learnt. The
concept of market development, product
quality and customer satisfaction is now
appreciated and the implications of cost and
Figure 2 Stree Shakti programme components
Programme 3: Stree Shakti
productivity is getting to be understood.
The effects of these learnings in terms
of sustainability of the operation and the
independance of the Self Help Groups is
obvious. Women empowerment and self respect
earned are important outcomes. Their families
have benefitted from access to better nutrition
and role-modelling.
100% of the sale value is returned to these
women through their Self Help groups. The Self
Help groups operate bank accounts with the
women’s savings. The women can draw loans
from their savings accounts.
PROGRESS IN STRATEGY
MARKETING:
We wish to extend our market to provide
employment for more women.Various strategies
including the setting up of the Display and Sale
Centre at Purkal and Exhibitions at several
Locations at Delhi were part of this strategy
implemented during the year.
TRAINING CENTRE:
Induction and training of employable women
is ongoing. PYDS seeks quality control through
management of micro processes in production.
The employment of a whole time trainer,
conduct of training by volunteers in specific
skills, the subsidising of the wages of trainees
during their training period were some of the
highlights of this strategy during the current
year.
EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING
CENTRE (SHISHU SHAKTI):
Young mothers are amongst the greatest in
need of our women’s empowerment program.
To help this, a Seven hour long Early Childhood
Centre has been inaugurated and is currently
operative. While the bulk of the money for this
structure was received from Mr. Charlie Oliver
of Canada Ms. Anju Kalsi was kind enough to
help us put up the toilet facilities.
EQUIPMENT:
Additional furniture, fittings and resources are
required for an optimal working environment.
During the year additional 4 sewing machines
were acquired. Several quilting tables were
added and a cutting Table developed. Special
quilting aids and equipment along with several
design books were received from our friends as
gifts; in addition, an equipment for spray
Programme 3: Stree Shakti
cleaning was also received as a gift. Specially
designed storage space for our different raw
materials and adequate shelves developed
for storing stencils and finished goods. We also
provided personal space to each individaul
worker to store her equipments at the work
place.
DESIGN CENTRE:
We’re working to ensure our designs are
current and responsive to market needs. The
number of designers was increased and there
were two of them as of the end of March 2010
to assist the chief designer Mrs. Swamy. More
than 75 designs are now available for our Patch
work quilts, 25 designs for our appliqued quilts,
35 designs for our Baby quilts, 8 designs for
our cildren’s quilts and 5 for our Silk quilts, 8
Duvet covers and 8 bedspreads. All patchwork
quilts and most applique quilt designs can be
coverted into duvet covers. Most baby quilts
can also be made successfully into children’s
quilts. Apart from these much development
has been witnessed in our designs related
to kitchen and bed room accessories, wall
organisers and bags now offered for sale.
HIGHLIGHTS
TRAINING
Mrs. Nanika Joseph, manufacturer and exporter
of designer handbags, brought two Master
Tailors from Delhi for a technical skills one
- day workshop. It opened our eyes to the
enormous possibilities of learning.
Our 6 month Training programme was
commenced for 10 women, and seven of
them graduated into work. In the course of
the training they are taught basic hand and
machine sewing skills, quilting, embroidery,
appliqué, and finishing. While they are training,
we pay them a stipend of Rs 750 a month.
When they graduate, their income depends on
their own work. Our women can double their
family income from their work with the Self
Help groups in Stree Shakti.
Our women attended a seven day training
schedule conducted on our campus in Disaster
Management. We are on a geological fault line,
and earthquake is a real threat. Preparation of
locals could well save lives. This Programme
was conducted with the assisance of the
Government of Uttarakhand and the UNDP.
MARKETING
Retail outlets: Following the Bombay terrorist
attack State Bank of India withdrew their
permission for the sales counter that we were
operating inside their premises every sunday.
PYDS thereafter rented an outlet in the heart
of Dehradun at the EBD Centre. However
Inaugurated by Her Excellency, the honourable
Governor for Uttarakhand Srimati Margaret Alva
on March 7th . Our beautiful new display and sales
centre at Purkal Campus invites you to come see
our designer handcrafted products.
DELHI EXPOS:
Between October 2009 and February 2010,
we undertook 9 major expos for our products
to raise our profile and market opportunities
outside of the Doon region. These included Dilli
Haat, American Express, American Embassy and
sales at Gurgaon. Sriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra
October 2-4, 2009 was particularly successful
with strong sales, network development and
many tricks of the trade learnt.
WEB SELLING:
A PayPal facility and new Stree Shakti website
www.purkalstreeshakti.org were launched.
These serve to provide Stree Shakti with an
independent identity and have increased our
international sales, although it is still early
days.
We are continuing to explore ways to advance
sales, to increase long term income generation
avenues for Stree Shakti women.
FACILITIES
Our major step forward in this reporting period
was the opening of new building Shakti Kunj,
with approximately 5000 Sq. feet of space at
a capital expenditure of Rs. 45 Lacs. Housing
the Sales and Display Centre and Shishu Shakti
crèche, this is a major development and
establishes Stree Shaki as an entity with a
future.
Shishu Shakti for Care of Small
Children
Inaugurated in Shakti Kunj by Her Excellency,
the honourable Governor for Uttarakhand Smt
Margaret Alva March 7, these facilities mark a
proud achievement of 2009-10.
Many local women, including those currently
working with us, have small children limiting
employment and training opportunities. These
women are often those in greatest need.
So thanks to the very generous support of
Canadian Friend, Mr Charlie Oliver - PYDS built,
fitted and staffed a state-of-the-art child care
and Early Childhood Learning Centre. He has
also underwrittten the ongoing costs of the
centre for the coming years.
This facility sets a benchmark in excellence of
facilities. Two, three and four year groups can
now receive care, love, education, lunch and
snacks; their mothers are now able to work
and train knowing their children are safe and
sound. Comprehensive immunisation, nutrition
and health care are included.
The other important outcome of this
programme is that early intervention by
providing nutrition and mental stimulation is a
great leveller.
BLOOD DONATION
A Blood Donation camp was held September
26th after an awareness drive undertaken by
PYDS students in villages nearby. Twenty five
donated, but sadly 29 of 30 Stree Shakti women
were unfit to donate as they were either
grossly underweight or anaemic. Since then we
have provided iron and vitamin supplements for
the women to help battle their anaemia.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT
We organised two training Programmes for
the Women and children associated with
PYDS in collaboration with The State Level
Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre
and the UNDP in August 2009. It was followed
by a week’s schedule on ‘Search and Rescue’
targetted at the young men and women of the
Commuity. Over 50 participated.
SAY NO TO PLASTICS
We have an on-going project to keep the
villages that we serve free of plastic. Twice
a year every child from our Programme
participates in this campaign. We invite
people involved in this Mission to help the
children understand the importance of the
effort. Eleven bins for collecting Plastic have
been built by the Society in the area and
students go from house to house talking to
the residents about using these instead of
emptying the sweepings of the house into the
seasonal stream nearby or simply dumping it
on the road. These children carry banners and
walk the streets of the villages explaining the
Mission.
REFORESTATION
The District Forest Officer, Dehra Dun has
kindly permitted us to plant trees in five bhigas
of nearby forest land and maintain them. The
first 40 trees were planted on September 26th
and we hope to get the children involved with
their upkeep.
The opening of the lower Secondary School has made necessary the addition of class rooms and
the Day Boarding Programme demands the addition of rooms for the purpose of carrying on our
classes for Dance, music, crafts and art. An additional room has also to be commissioned to
accomodate the Common room for the teaching staff. We are also in need of larger laboratories
for the different sciences. All this will need investment in buildings and support infrastructure.
Land is available for the purpose but it still needs to be developed and its bunds strengthened to
make possible the erection of suitable buildings. If these additional buildings become possible, we
would be able to take classes 9th and 10th into the Day Boarding Programme in the coming years.
What People Are Saying About Us
Hats off, to all of you, who have economically
empowered Purkal’s women and youth, and
continue to do so, for years to come”
Vipul Dhasmana, World Integrity Center team
“We have experience in educational development projects
in South Africa, Zambia, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Australia and
four projects in India. ... We can confidently recommend this
project to potential donors. It meets a real and urgent need,
assisting among the poorest of India’s youth with
a highly structured, after-school-hours learning
program. Not a cent of funding is wasted; ... I have
no hesitation in judging them to be corruptionfree”
Tony & Natasha, Australia
“I was amazed by the great impact both of you
have had on this little village . Being associated
with an NGO for over 17 years, I can well imagine the obstacles you had to
clear and the challenges that lie ahead”
Parth
“It’s a great effort, and ... the focus on literacy, nutrition, and health-care
– with women being principally employed as the agents of change – is very
thoughtful. A practical way of implementing what Amartya Sen has been
saying for years”
Mr. Subhramaniam, Chennai
“I live in Colorado. I use the quilt I purchased there every single day & am
ordering more for the holidays!”
Melissa Brooks, USA
What People Are Saying About Us
“Children, ladies and men folk of this part of northern Dehra Dun are
watching education, nutrition, health, money and happiness come into
their lives. They are fast becoming a part of the mainstream society. We
are attracting talent from nearby areas and overseas, people who are
volunteering their time and energies for The Cause. There are many more
initiatives waiting to happen – with God’s help and
yours too, we shall do them”
Arun Mamgain, Dehradun
“One of the strongest aspects of PYDS is its ability
to expand its operations into territories where
the children’s thoughts of obtaining an adequate
education were merely a dream prior to the
society’s presence. The society functions as a
force for positive change in these communities and
has made amazing progress since its humble beginnings”
Amar Ghilani, Canada
“Wonderful work you are doing! very comprehensive.
Congratulations to your teachers and students and
leadership”
Kathy Kemper, USA
