Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
page 2 January 20, 2013
Listen to this very interesting dialogue
in our gospel today which initiated a
miracle:
When the wine ran short, the
mother of Jesus said to him, “They
have no wine.” And Jesus said to her,
“Woman, how does your concern
affect me? My hour has not yet
come.” His mother said to the servers,
“Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus told
the servers, “Fill the jars with water.”
So they filled them to the brim. Then
he told them, “Draw some out now
and take it to the headwaiter.” The
headwaiter called the bridegroom and
said to him, “Everyone serves good
wine first, and then when the people
have drunk freely, an inferior one; but
you have kept the good wine until
now.”
Jesus gave them the best wine,
but more than that, he gave himself. It
is the precious GIFT OF LOVE that
embraces two hearts to become one. It
is still that love that makes the
Sacrament of Matrimony relevant in
this modern age. Read this story: A
young wife was just operated on the
face and her mouth was twisted. One
of the nerves of the muscle of the
mouth was cut which caused the
twisting of the mouth. Her mouth will
be like that for ever. Her young
husband was in the room, standing
beside her. And the young woman
asked the doctor, “Will my mouth
always be like this?” The doctor
answered, “Yes, for ever; the nerve
was cut.” Then tears began to fall
from her eyes. But the husband smiled
and said, “I like it. It’s cute.” Then he
P[stor’s Not_s
asked his wife,
“Can I kiss you?”
The wife was
hesitant, yet, the
husband was
persistent. Then he
bowed to kiss her,
and you can
imagine how he twisted his mouth to
accommodate to hers. And after a long
kiss, the young man said, “You see,
our kiss still works. It is as sweet as
ever.”
Husbands and wives, does your
kiss still work and is it as sweet as
ever? That gift of love of Jesus to the
couple at the wedding in Cana is still
the same finest wine of love that Jesus
offers to you today. It is still the love
that makes your kiss work and be as
sweet as ever. It is still the love that
creates wonders and makes miracles.
However, everything is not
sugarcoated. There will be times that
you will experience discordant
relationships. But trust in God! Allow
him to enter into your lives when
things get unsettled. God will be in
your hearts to refocus your lives to
something memorable and
inspirational. He will sit beside you,
so that whatever wrong you will do,
God will embrace them with his grace
and forgiveness. Eventually, he will
enrich your love for each other.
Always keep the finest wine in your
relationship to make your lives spin
with joy and laughter forever.
God bless you all!
Francis de Sales, C.O., T.O.M., A.O.F.M. Cap., (August 21, 1567 – December 28,
1622) was a Bishop of Geneva and is honored as a saint in the Roman Catholic
January 22, 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling which
legalized abortion during all nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason. Sadly, 40 years later, most
Americans still don’t know the radical nature of this ruling imposed on our nation by the Court and they don’t
know the catastrophic impact it has had on our culture. Hence, this anniversary provides a great opportunity to
educate ourselves and our society on this subject.
What is Roe v. Wade?
40 Years of Roe v. Wade and Its Impact on Our Culture
It is the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”)
said she was pregnant from rape and wanted an abortion. She sued a Texas district attorney (Henry Wade) to
prevent him from enforcing a Texas law banning abortion except to save the mother’s life. On January 22, 1973,
the Court decided this case, and a similar case (Doe v. Bolton) in which Sandra Cano (“Mary Doe”) challenged
Georgia’s abortion ban after being denied an abortion by a hospital review committee. The Court struck down both
state laws, thereby striking down similar laws in all the other states as well. Norma McCorvey later admitted
having lied about the rape. Horrified at these decisions’ impact, both she and Sandra Cano are now among those
urging their reversal.
What did Roe v. Wade do?
It said the right of privacy (not mentioned in the text of the Constitution) “is broad enough to encompass a
woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.” The Justices ruled that a state may not restrict
abortion at all in the first three months of pregnancy. It may establish guidelines only to protect the mother’s health
during the second three months. After “viability,” when the unborn child could survive if delivered (which the
Court placed at 24 to 28 weeks of gestation), the state may prohibit abortion unless it is deemed necessary to
preserve the mother’s “life or health.”
Although this may appear to give states the authority to ban most post-viability abortions, in reality it does
no such thing. In the companion case Doe v. Bolton, which the Court said must be read together with Roe,
“health” was defined in the abortion context to include “all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial,
and the woman’s age—relevant to the well-being of the patient.” By this definition, abortion must be allowed in
the ninth month if the abortionist says it is needed to serve a woman’s emotional well-being, for example. Thus all
meaningful limits on abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy were discarded.
What is Roe’s impact on society?
Following Roe, abortions in the U.S. skyrocketed to well over a million a year, with one-fourth of all pregnancies
ending in abortion. According to public reports, there have been more than 55 million abortions since Roe and
some estimates put the total closer to 60 million. More than 90 percent of abortions are done for social or
economic reasons. Less than 2 percent are done as the result of rape, incest or to preserve the life of the mother.
Problems that some claimed Roe would alleviate—“unwanted” children, child abuse and abandonment, etc.—have
worsened. Many women have been maimed or killed by legal abortion. Many more women bear heavy emotional
scars from abortion, and increasingly they are making their stories public to warn other women (see
www.hopeafterabortion.org). Far from emancipating women, Roe has helped create the expectation that women
will resort to abortion—to “fit” into college and the workforce, and to free men from unwanted parental
responsibility. It has blocked progress toward a society that welcomes women with their children (see
www.feministsforlife.org).
What can you do about it?
Pray and fast that our nation will correct the injustice of legal abortion and rebuild a culture that respects and protects every human
life. Educate yourself and others. Great resources are available online at www.nebcathcon.org, old.usccb.org/prolife/issues/
The bright future of our Church
Thoughtful Moments
When children participate in the Church from a young age, they grow to
be strong and faithful Catholics for life. Encouraging youngsters to
take an active part in parish life will give them a sense of belonging.
And it makes our children and our Church stronger. Consider these
ideas:
Altar Server. This is a
common way children
participate in parish life.
Many parishes offer both
boys and girls the chance to
be altar servers. Youngsters
learn the order of the Mass,
grow to appreciate
sacraments and sacramentals,
and establish healthy
relationships with clergy.
Christian witness. Young
people who know the
traditions, creed, teachings,
and history of the church can
share their Catholic faith with
others. Parents can encourage this by taking youngsters to religious
education classes faithfully and attending Mass every Sunday and holy
day.
Catholic school. In a world trying desperately to do without God, it is
a gift to be able to send children to a Christ-centered parish school. In
Catholic school, students are encouraged to care for one another.
Cruelty and bullying are met head-on to help prevent the type of
isolation that can erupt into deadly violence.
Parish support. Many parishes have opportunities for youths to serve
as lectors, choir members, or ushers. Other ministries include soup
kitchens, work camps, homeless shelters, or visiting homebound
parishioners.
initial Safe Environment training you will not need to attend another training,
just update your paperwork. Please call today.
Keep it real
Do you try to do too
much? The New Year
is a good chance to
examine your
priorities and decide
what really matters. How
organized does your home really
have to be? How available do we
have to be to jobs or friends?
Handle what you reasonably can,
and give the rest to God.
Show and Tell
Demonstrating good Christian
values, taking children to Mass,
and letting them
see you in daily
prayer illustrates
the importance
of your faith.
But don’t forget
to talk to
youngsters about
our love for God and why you are
Catholic. Show AND tell them.
Do you get asked questions you
can’t answer about the faith?
Invest in a copy of the Catechism
of the Catholic Church. It’s the
definitive reference on the faith,
and the index makes it easy to
find answers quickly. It is
available from most Catholic
bookstore and many general
ones. Also, available on-line at
Classroom News...
Here we are in the middle of January! Where did the time go? We have had another busy month.
In Phonics we are midway into our unit on the vowel digraphs ea, oo, ue, ui, ew, aw, and al as well as the diphthongs
oy, oi, ow, and ou. So far the children are doing well learning these vowel sound combinations.
In Math we have been making congruent shapes, Venn diagrams, using the a.m. and p.m. labels for time, and reading a
thermometer to the nearest 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Looking ahead we will discuss gallons, liters, medians, and quarts.
In Social Studies we have talked about Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of peace and compassion for all. I asked the
children to ponder their dreams for our country or community. Here are some of their thoughts:
Maria--I dream that everyone would pray.
Austin--I dream for world peace.
Gregg--I dream there would be no more fighting.
Fabiola--I dream all guns and bombs would disappear.
Kate--I dream I could help the poor.
Happy Birthday to Fabiola Hernandez.
2nd Grade
Music
Happy New Year to all as we begin a new semester. Music classes will be continuing to work on rhythm, melody,
harmony, form, tone color and creating as well as building a working music vocabulary. In all classes, we will continue
to develop our singing voices.
In the lower classes we will put extra emphasis on rhythm as well. In the upper grades we will continue to work on our
recorders. The Singspirations will be learning some new pieces and will be available for performances soon. If you
have a group or organization that needs some entertainment, please let us know. We would love to come and perform
for you.
To the children of the world, let them always have the opportunity to grow, develop, and above all create.
