Dept. coming events Fall activities in high gear Newport Mansion trip The Wilmington Recreation Department is now taking registrations for its' Saturday, Sept 22 trip to beautiful Newport, R.I. The group will enjoy a tour of Narragansett Bay by boat, have time at the Brick Market Place for shopping and lunch, then lour Rosecliff, one of Newport's famous mansions. There will also be a narrated bus tour along the mansion studded shoreline. Call the Recreation Department at 658-4270 for more information. Ballroom dancing lessons Back by popular demand. The Wilmington Recreation Depart- ment is offering a beginners and an advanced ballroom dance class on Friday evenings beginning Sept. 28. The beginners' ballroom class will include fox trot, waltz, swing, cha-cha and line dances. The advanced class will offer intermediate steps in the above dances, plus rumba and tango. The beginners ballroom class will be held at 7:30 and the advanced class will be held at 8:30 p.m. Each class is one hour. The classes run for eight weeks. Pre-registration is Tequired. Call the Recreation Office at 658-4270 or stop by Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for further information or to register. Outdoors column Where have all the anglers gone? by Bill Conlon This is a funny time of year. Not Ha-Ha funny, but odd funny. It's still hot, and summer is still in effect. But nobody is giving much thought to fishing anymore. How odd. Then again, the kids are back in school, and the vacation crowd has left for the season. Labor Day has passed, and that means summer is (by custom) gone. Not really, since the Autumnal Equinox won't arrive until the next-to-last week of this month, but everybody feels like the summer has ended. That's too bad. The bass are happily blowing up all and sundry things they can catch, the fall trout stocking starts soon, as water temperatures will be dropping into the trout's liveable range again, and even the pickerel are hitting. The fishing is still quite hot. It is, really! It's just that there's nobody left on the ponds anymore. Everybody seems to be spending all their attention on hunting and archery skills. New Hampshire's bow season for deer begins in one week, and Massachusetts archers will be pulling strings soon, which has drawn away from fishing. Runners enjoy 'wild' race More than 200 professional and amateur runners travelled a course around Spot Pond at the recent Fourth Annual Run Wild Road Race at the Metropolitan District Commission's Stone Zoo, according to Dr. Mark Goldstein, executive director of the Metro Parks Zoos. The five mile race is sanctioned by the New England Athletic Congress and can be used to qualify for other races. In addition to the adult race, more than 50 children participated in Kids' Run Wild, a mini-race around the Stone Zoo parking lot. "Despite State fiscal realities, Stone Zoo continues to receive generous support from the public, as evidenced by the turnout here today," Dr. Goldstein said at the awards ceremony following the race. Wendy Davis, chair of the Stone Zoo Advisory Committee, thanked zoo visitors for the recent surge of letters and phone calls to state legislators in support of level funding for the MclroParks Zoos and passage of the "Zoo Bill" to create the Commonwealth Zoological Corporation. "The outcry has been tremendous, and more calls and letters are still necessary if we want to be here again next year for the fifth annual Run Wild," Davis said. Dr. Goldstein awarded prizes to the first, second and third male arid female winners in the following categories: Kids Run Wild-ages up to six and seven-12; Run Wild ages 13-39 and 40 and up. Davis and the Stone Zoo Advisory Committee presented plaques to the overall male and female winners. Run Wild was sponsored by the MDC MetroParks Zoos, Bsoton Zoological Society, Stone Zoo Advisory Committee and Cambridge Sports Union. tffim\ Strong finish ■ . Eleven-year-old Jay Isbcrg of Wilmington placed second in the seven to 12-year-old age category at the recent MDC Stone Zoo's Fourth Annual Run Wild Road Race. Of course, the sporting goods and related shops arc ordering hunting stuff, instead of fishing stuff, but that's the odd nature of sales. Try to find a swimsuil in August, or a pair of good snow boots when February is in full howl. Unlikely. Instead, stores stock up for what is ahead, not for the season underway. The ice won't form for another two or three months, depending on the weather, and it will be January before fishing once again is tops on the outdoor fun list. (Just as an impolite observation, remember how frigid it was during December of 1989? Temperatures got above freezing only on the very last day of the month. Now, notice how many women arc due to give birth in the next few weeks. Hmm. Now count nine months from a cold December to a September "labor day." Ahem. Sorry.) But without the kids, and the day- trippers, and the vacationers, there just aren't many people left on the pond. It seems vacant, lonely. Actually, fish arc active as ever. If I have to fish alone, so much the better. It's a nice change of pace from the crowded lakes and ponds of July. Besides, there's a special serenity found only on a pond as the leaves change colors, quietly fishing for enthusiastic bass all alone. Sure, I'll get involved in hunting soon enough, and ice fishing after that. But not yet. There's still a couple of weeks of summer left, and they arc too precious to waste. — Tackle Box -- Sorry kids. My better half is still in the hospital, still in the intensive care unit, and I just haven't been on the ball lately. Bear with me. I'm a burnout case in the making. This Saturday, the state's Aquatic Resources Education Program (or formerly called the Urban Anglers) will hold a free fishing instruction clinic on Ames Pond in Tewksbury. Head honcho Jose Cambrils (who also happens to be president of the Greater Lowell Fly Fishers club) is hosting the seminar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your own gear if you can, but some will be available for borrowing if you need. The class is being sponsored as part of the Mct- Lifc Outdoors Scries, so call (617) 437-1508 to make a reservation, if you want, or just show up. Tewksbury Rod & Gun Club will be a hoppin' place for the next few weeks. On September 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the club will hold a Gun Show (nee) Crafts Fair (nee) Flea Market at their headquarters on Chandler Street. Call Chcrylc at 658-6830 to reserve a space (at SI5 per table.) Also coming to TR&G this month is their annual Sportsmen's Family Rendezvous, September 30, from 10 a.m. onwards. The event will see a 15-targct 3-D archery shoot, all sorts of shooting events (starling at 1 p.m.) with rifle and pistol shoots and a frontier black powder shoot, plenty of hot chow including a pig roast and fresh clams, fly casting contests for kids and adults, pony rides, horseshoes ... looks like a long day at Chandler Street Tickets arc $5 in advance, $6 that day. September 16 will see the Greater Lowell Fly Fishers annual Fall Bass and Carp Derby on the Mcrrimack River.
