Then again, thai applies for most teams. Kansas City 17 Minnesota 14 These arc two of the best defensive teams in the league and given that fact, the game will probably end up, 51-48. Cleveland 24 Pittsburgh 20 Although it hasn't been said, I like the Steelers brand of ball, but the Browns are at home and that is worth at least four points. Los Angeles 26 Green Bay 14 With Majik, I'd have the Pack in the playoffs, but without, they're a .500 club, maybe. Chicago 17 Seattle 6 If Ditka just stayed with one QB, the Bears would contend with the i^y^f. of them. Problem is, he continues to juggle Tomazck and Harbaugh with no resolution in sight. San Diego 24 Dallas 21 Dallas is rebuilding rather well, and could win four or five games this year. The Chargers are one or two players away from challenging Denver and K.C. Detroit 38 Tampa Bay 30 The Bucs play the Lions tough at the Dome, but the run and shoot will prevail in a western style shootout. N.Y. Giants 31 Philadelphia 26 A victory for cither team is essential. The reasons are obvi since the Giants lost both time Philly last year, and still won division. But I'm sure they d want to duplicate that feat. San Fran 27 New Orleans Last year's game here wa thriller. Look for a repeat of tr theatrics and then look fo threepeat from the Niners. Merrimack Valley swim tryout' The Merrimack Valley Pirate Swim Team will hold tryouts Monday September 10 through Friday September 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Greater Lawrence Technical High School, 57 River Road, Andover. MVP is an age group team for swimmers six and older and is affiliated with United States Swimming. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. each day followed by tryout sessions. Swimmers new to the age group experience a^e invited to participate in the team workouts during tryout week to evaluate the program. During the recent Summer Long Course season the Pirates continually placed high in meets throughout New England. Also this summer, 20 swimmers from the SG Bcrlin-Nord Swim Team of Berlin, West Germany, and their coaches spent three weeks living and training with the Pirates. The West Germans not only sampled American culture, but competed in local area swim meets as well. In 1991, the Pirates will travel to Germany to complete the exchange. During the short course season MVP swimmers achieved natio reportablc times and boasts team members who made the N England Top Ten rankings. Money Matters A ride down 'gasoline alley' by Tony Accardi Gasoline! Americans just can't live without it. And once again the crisis in the Mideast has brought the country's attention to this fossil fuel. But where do you buy your gas arid why? The multibillion dollar oil corporations have done numerous studies to determine just what makes a consumer use one gasoline rather than another. As a result there exists numerous buying options ranging I mm regular unleaded to super, from self service to full and from cash only to credit cards. The multifacetcd market in Wilmington and Tewksbury certainly is no different. Shell ranks highest with four stations followed by Mobil with three. But if you prefer to "trust your car, to the man who wears the star" you can find two Texaco stations, one each in Wilmington and Tewksbury. There are also two Gulf, two Sunoco, two Citgo and one Exxon. In the past few years the trend has been toward self service stations. Gone forever are the days of free daisy glasses and green colored coffee mugs to entice the consumer. Instead today cost is the dominant sales factor and the easiest way to keep the price of gasoline down is to keep overhead low. This is achieved at the self service stations by the elimination of station attendants. If you want your oil checked, it makes a heck of a lot more sense to do it at home rather than to pay the approximately 15 cents more a gallon you will be charged if you drive into the full service island rather than the self. Independent oil companies have also made a definite mark in the gasoline market in Wilmington and Tewksbury. Here the gas is somewhat cheaper, but usually you have to pay cash, and God knows, there isn't much of that around these days. In Wilmington Hess and Gibbs are the largest of these independent and in Tewksbury, Haffncr on Main Street is by far the biggest. Interesting though, at Hess full service is all that is offered, while Haffncr's offers only self services. But these independents do not offer automotive service. And in small communities like Wilming- ton and Tewksbury, the idea of friendly service still ranks high on consumer preference lists. At Tewksbury Lions Club will sponsor walk-a-thon to benefit Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Tewksbury Lions Club will be conducting the annual Journey to Sight Walk-a-Thon. The bene- ficiary of the proceeds from this event will be the Mass.Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. The Journey for Sight Walk will start and end at the Livingston Street Youth Center, Tewksbury. Rcgistraiton will begin at 8 a.m. with the walkers kicking off at 9. This event has been scheduled to coincide with the annual Tewks- bury Homecoming Weekend. A sizable number of people arc expected to participate, and pledge sheets and additional information arc being distributed to every Lions Club walk-a-thon D&D Texaco in Wilmington your gas is pumped full service with usually a joke or two added by station attendant Steve Surdam. Steve certainly makes for some interesting fillups. especially if you catch him around Halloween when he dons his monster costume or at Christmas lime when he places his portly body inside a well fitting Santa suit. Of the 21 stations now in service in the two communities, eight offer full service only, 11 offer either full or self and two offer self only. This low number of "self service only" stations arc a definite indication that there arc still many consumers who see service as a top priority. In the race to attract more gasoline consumers the combination gasoline station, Mini Mart has emerged. Recently, in Tewksbury at the corner of Shawshecn and Main streets, Texaco has opened just this type of establishment. Here one can fill his car with gas while buying the newspaper, candy, cigarettes or a variety of other essential household items. Shell offers this same convenience at the corner of Pike Street and Main in Tewksbury. Surveys show that the price on gasoline in this type of establishment is within the competitive limits. Currently there is a proposal for another of these combination service stations on Route 133 in Tewksbury. At this point in time, there arc no combination service outlets in Wilmington. But their convenience makes it a certainty that it is only a matter of time before Wilmington residents will also be nibbling a candy bar while pumping gas. Gasoline!
