THE 2007 ALFRED TISSIERES YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD<br />

The recipient of the 2007 Alfred Tissieres Young Investigator Award of the Cell Stress Society Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

was Dr. Ellen Nollen. She was the sec<strong>on</strong>d awardee after A. Vila-Sanjurjo (2005).<br />

Ellen Nollen currently holds a Rosalind Franklin Fellowship at the Department of Genetics, University<br />

Medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>Centre</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gr<strong>on</strong>ingen, in the Netherlands, where she is studying the molecular basis of Parkins<strong>on</strong>’s<br />

disease and working <strong>on</strong> C. elegans models <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> protein-misfolding diseases. The results will aid understanding<br />

of the cellular processes underlying age-related, misfolding diseases and may yield potential drug targets <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Parkins<strong>on</strong>’s disease and other related disorders. She has previously worked in the Dept. of Functi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Genomics, Hubrecht Laboratory, Utrecht, under Prof. R<strong>on</strong>ald Plasterk, and in the Dept. of Biochemistry,<br />

Northwestern University, Evanst<strong>on</strong>, USA, under Prof. Rick Morimoto. She completed her doctorate thesis<br />

<strong>on</strong> “Hsp70 chaper<strong>on</strong>e functi<strong>on</strong>s in stressed cells” in 2000 under Prof. Harm Kampinga at the University of<br />

Gr<strong>on</strong>ingen.<br />
