AWARDEES OF THE CONGRESS THE 2007 HANS SELYE MEMORIAL DISTINGUISHED LECTURE AWARD 8 23-26 August 2007, Budapest, Hungary The Hans Selye Foundation (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) selected Professor Mary Dallman as a recipient of the 2007 Hans Selye Memorial Distinguished Lecture Award. She has received this award after W. Vale (1994), G.P. Chrousos (1997), M. Palkovics (1998), J. Rivier (2000), F. Holsboer (2002) and S. Szabo (2004). Mary Dallman graduated at the Smith College from chemistry and obtained her PhD at the Stan<strong>for</strong>d University from physiology. She was a postdoctoral fellow in Stockholm and at the University of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia at San Francisco. From 1970 she is a member of the Faculty at UCSF. Prof. Dallman served as a member of NIH Study Sections of the NRC Committee on Space Biology & Medicine; and participated in NIH Workshops & Working Groups on Perimenopause, Drug Abuse, Stress & CVD and Alzheimer’s disease. She was an editor of two sectionsof the American Journal of Physiology and Endocrinology and served as member of the editorial boards of the journals Steroids, Journal of Neurosciences, Stress and Molecular Psychiatry. Prof. Dallman had several Awards and honors including a membership in the council of the APS Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Endocrine Society. She was the president of the Women in Endocrinology section of the International Society of Neuroendocrinology. She obtained a Fogarty Travel Fellowship; the MT Jones Prize from the British Neuroendocrine Society; the Levine Lectureship from the University of Trier; a Lectureship from the Brain <strong>Research</strong> Institute in Amsterdam; and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology.
3rd Cell Stress Society International Congress on Stress Responses in Biology and Medicine and 2nd World Conference of Stress THE 2007 CELL STRESS SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL MEDAL The recipient of the 2007 Cell Stress Society International Medal was Professor R. John Ellis. He has received this award after T. Yura (2000), S. Lindquist (2003) and A. Ciechanover (2005). R. John Ellis earned his doctorate in 1960 from King's College, London <strong>for</strong> research on transamination reactions with Professor Davies. His postdoctoral studies were done at Ox<strong>for</strong>d in the Biochemistry Department on sulfate reduction in bacteria with Professor Pasternak. In 1964 Dr. Ellis joined the Departments of Botany and Biochemistry at the University of Aberdeen. He moved to the newly founded Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick in 1970 as Senior Lecturer and Head of the Chloroplast <strong>Research</strong> Group. In 1976 was awarded a Personal Chair in the department and in 1983 was elected to the Royal Society <strong>for</strong> his work on chloroplast biogenesis. In 1980 he discovered the first example of a newly synthesized polypeptide that binds to another protein be<strong>for</strong>e it folds and assembles; this binding keeps this polypeptide, the large subunit of rubisco, from aggregating with itself. This finding led to the <strong>for</strong>mulation in 1987 of the molecular chaperone concept as a new general cellular function, the term`molecular chaperone` having being proposed by Ron Laskey in 1978 to describe the properties of a nuclear protein involved in the assembly of nucleosomes. The cloning and sequencing of the rubisco binding protein led to the discovery of the chaperonin family of chaperones in 1988. Ellis continues to contribute to the development of ideas about the chaperone function. 9
