The Family of
Bill and Mary’s Wedding, May 27, 1913
73

From "A Klein Family History 1815-1981" by Dorothy Klein Luers
Chapter I – William Francis – June 12, 1886 – May 24, 1967
This first born was named in honor of his grandfather. He and Mary Ann Thul, 8/11/1886-8/1/1979, were
married on May 27, 1913. The marriage was blessed with three daughters, followed by three sons. Then five
years later another daughter. Hard work, good food, fun, and much loving and laughter were the theme at this
Klein home. Mary reigned over the garden, which she delighted in showing to guests. Flowers were as
numerous as vegetables. Her houseplants would put today's plant fans to shame.
Chickens were a big thing on this farm but Bill's greatest interest was cows. Evenings always found Bill at
the table after dinner reading “The Dairyman” magazine.
The farm they purchased was on the east shore of Lake Susan. Mary and the kids loved to fish and not
finding them home meant they were at the lake fishing.
76

As if their brood wasn't enough, Bill and Mary got into 4-H work in the 1930's and worked with children of
probably a dozen families of the area. Many were the hours they spent at meetings, demonstrations, leader
meetings, fairs, and who knows what. They earned the respect of many.
That this couple loved children was evident every day. Every Sunday was family day at the Klein’s. Every
kid who visited at the Klein’s remembers Aunt Mary standing at the old range popping corn. The married
children with their families went home loaded with food and fun to visit the folks. And fun they had. No one
took a back seat so it was almost like "a three ring circus" as Mary would say telling about it. And how Bill
and Mary loved it. Mary's giggles with tears rolling will always be remembered.
On May 26, 1963, family and friends gathered at St. Hubert Church for the fiftieth wedding anniversary
celebration of Mr. and Mrs. William Klein. A repeat of Bill's folks' anniversary 28 years before.
Ill health forced this couple to a nursing home. On May 24, 1967, Bill passed onto his reward. Mary lingered
on for twelve more years, seemingly forgotten by her God until He came to get her on August 1, 1979.
The Apple Cider History (in Mary Klein Schleicher's Words)
About 1950, Joe (Klein) got several bushels of apples. He dug out an old apple press that Bill Klein had gotten
at an auction years before and invited the whole family (brothers and sisters and a couple of aunts and uncles)
to the farm to make apple cider.
The first attempts were rather crude, but now everyone knows what to do and has a job -- throwing apples in
the hopper, turning the grinder, disposing of the waste or straining and jugging the cider. For over fifty years,
the descendants of Bill Klein have gotten together nearly every year for Cider Sunday. We met at the farm
until it was sold, and since then we have met at several different homes.
In 1987, Clarence and Mary bought a new apple press. Since then, their kids and grandkids have been making
cider too, usually on a different Sunday from the "Klein" cider day.
After the cleanup is done, we all enjoy the best potluck along with plenty of hot or cold apple cider!
(Editor’s Note: Thanks, Mary for sharing this tradition.)
Klein Family History 1815 - 1981" by Dorothy Klein Luers
1. Bernadette – April 24, 1914 – November 29, 2002
From "A
This firstborn of William and Mary was the firstborn grandchild of Emil and Angela. Bernie married
Edmund Hartman of Excelsior, on October 9, 1948. She had been keeping house for Mr. and Mrs. Case, at
Excelsior. Ed and Bernie made their home with Mr. Case then until he died. When the Case home was sold the
Hartman’s purchased a home of their own on the outskirts of Excelsior.
Bernie cherishes beautiful things and has an artistic knack so her home is a veritable display of beautiful and
priceless keepsakes. Keeping a perfect house she seems to do without effort while juggling a million other
things at the same time. Bernie is a person who excels in all she does and seems to be able to do anything.
She's an expert seamstress, a super cook, a charming hostess, does much for the church, has many friends and
is always good company.
Maybe being so busy and involved is why Bernie never ages. Buying a bike in the 70's is probably one of the
reasons why she'd kept so trim. Bernie and Ed have no children but have been very involved with nieces and
nephews. Tiny Bernie is a true example of the expression: Good things come in small packages. Ed died
September 21, 1998; Bernie died in Shakopee, December 3, 2002.
2. Florence Angela Klein - June 2, 1915 – February 26, 2003
As a child, Florence was teased about her red hair and freckles to the point of her believing they were the
worst thing a girl could possess. Florence was cute and we cousins envied her for her beautiful hair. No one
was kinder or more concerned about others than Florence. She'd give or do anything for anyone and did so
many times. Like her sister, mother's good training made her a good housekeeper, cook, church person, and
friend of many.
After putting herself through Guardian Angels Catholic High School, in Chaska, Florence, found
employment in Minneapolis, as an office girl in a doctor-dentist office.
Florence and her sister, Laura, shared an apartment until Laura got married. Cousin Dot moved in and then
took over the apartment, when Florence was swept off her feet by a guy from Savage.
She married Martin Lawrence Conroy, on June 5, 1946. They moved into a house near Savage, where they
raised their family. In 1967, they built a new house south of Savage, near Prior Lake. Handsome cowboy
husband, Marty, put a sparkle in Florence's eyes. He was born May 22, 1912. He really enjoyed working on his
ranch. They had two children, Larry and Tom. A Viet Nam vet, Larry died in 1981. Marty died on February
11, 1990, after several months of viral pneumonia complications. After Marty died, Florence moved into a
senior apartment building in Savage, where she became involved in many of the programs they had there, and
continued to be active at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
On Nov. 1, 2001, she moved in with her son Tom and his family. She broke her right leg in mid-September;
after a few days in the hospital, she went into a transitional care facility in South St. Paul. She was going to go
back to Tom's when she was stronger, but she had a mild stroke and died two days later on February 26, 2003.
3. Laura Josephine Marie Klein – January 25, 1917 – October 19, 1984
And another girl was born to Bill and Mary. She followed Florence to school. Laura had fun all the time and
Florence did the worrying about the tricks Laura played. "Kidder" should have been Laura's middle name. She
had her family in giggles or sobs constantly. She did whatever came to her bright mind and hung the blame
(jokingly) on whoever was nearest. All the Klein children were good looking but Laura was the cute one with
a charming personality and so she was a very popular young lady. But witty Laura kept all the beaus laughing
and waiting.
Laura became a live in housekeeper and helped with the children of an executive at the Fanny Farmer Candy
Company. When his family got transferred to Wisconsin, Laura went with them. Eventually she started
working for the candy company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When she came back to Minnesota, she worked at a
Fanny Farmer store in downtown St. Paul. Wyman Fourré worked kiddy corner to the store in the Ramsey
County Courthouse and was the first Veteran's Service officer in Ramsey County. He met her going into that
candy store. A handsome fellow with a wit to match hers, he bought her tons of candy until she finally
accepted his proposal. Laura married Wyman Francis Fourré, 1/20/1897, on 9/25/1945. They first lived in a
four-plex on Midway Parkway. They built their house on Midway Parkway & Pascal between the State Fair
grounds and Como Park. She was a great baker: cakes, bars and everyone's favorite, apple crisp. Wyman loved
to garden.
After Wyman retired, he still went to the courthouse regularly to volunteer with a friend who was the Judge
that ran the juvenile court. He would bring a lot of these troubled children home to be with his kids to play
catch, and he showed them how to garden along with many other activities.
They kept busy at their church. They helped build the Men's Club and the Women's Club, organized bingo
games where many parishioners worked and Laura kept the books. She also regularly laundered the Priests
Albs and worked the annual Rummage Sales, while Wyman ushered every Sunday.
Laura took care of Wyman, and he died of heart disease at an old age on 6/28/1982. She kept busy with
grandchildren and her church. She loved having family and friends over while serving them food and visiting.
She died of a heart attack on October 19, 1984.
4. Joseph – July 2, 1920 – February 17,1997
Finally a boy! Joe was always such a neat, quiet, handsome boy who never bothered or got in anyone's way.
While a kid it is hard to remember a time when a parent raised a voice or punished him. Then when he grew up
all devilment broke loose when he and Laura became a team. After the Sunday family get-togethers, Mary
would tell how sore her sides were from laughing at the kids. "That Laura and Joe do the craziest things!"
Imagine with the right manager how far they could have gone.
Joe's sense of humor is precious but he does have a serious side too. After school he worked at the Porter
home, near Hopkins, taking care of the grounds and farm. Here he met Dee. Then he took up plumbing and
heating with the Porter Company, in Minneapolis. On July 31, 1946, Joe married Delores Mary Doherty. Dee
is the daughter of Fred and Norma Doherty, but she was raised by her grandparents, William J. and Ethel
Schon in Minneapolis. They made their home in Eden Prairie.
5. Willis William Klein – September 27, 1921 – February 18, 2000
This was the free spirited boy. He loved the outdoors and fun. School was not his favorite pastime but
hunting and fishing were. Willis was never in a hurry.
Willis served in the Army. After that he worked odd jobs and then did factory work in Hopkins. He enjoyed
life to the fullest and was in no hurry to settle down.
Willis took a job at the Ford Plant, in St. Paul, driving back and forth daily. He worked there over 30 years.
He gardened in his off hours and raised the best strawberries available. He loved gardening and kept it free of
weeds all season. On August 19, 1953, he married Anita Rose Meyer, born October 5, 1931. While their new
home was being built across the street from Lake Susan, in Chanhassen, they lived with his folks. They lived
in that house 44 ½ years.
After the kids were older, Anita worked at Animal Fair in Chanhassen. Later she worked at Deli Express in
Eden Prairie.
Anita had cancer in the early 1990's and is totally cancer free after intensive chemotherapy. Then she got 2nd
and 3rd degree burns in an accident. She was really weakened after all the rehabilitation for that, so they
moved into a senior apartment building in Savage (same as Florence Conroy). Then they lived in different
places in Chaska. Willis had numerous medical problems that progressively worsened, especially his
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, so he went into a nursing home in Jordan. He came to all the family gatherings,
which he loved. He still knew his immediate family until the end. He died on February 18, 2000.
Anita lives in a different apartment building in Chaska. She loves to read, keeps busy with her family,
enjoys the people who stop by from church, her friends and going for long drives.
Anita Meyer Klein's Story
I am writing this on behalf of my ancestors on my mother’s side, simply because it has occurred to me that
being the oldest one, and probably the only one that knows these facts, I should put them down on paper so
that interested parties can also have knowledge of them. I don’t know too many dates; but I shall attempt to tell
you the bits and pieces that have in the foggy memories that I have. . . . .
My Dad, Nick Meyer, was born in Belle Plain, Minnesota, 5/17/1895. He was born of Luxembourg parents,
who although they were born in this country, spoke fluent Luxembourg. As did most of the people in his
community. Belle Plain at that time was divided into two communities, the Irish and the Luxembourgers. Dad
didn’t learn English until he went to school.
Dad was drafted during WWI and after his “boot camp” training, was shipped over to France. The war was
almost over by the time he got to France. The officers were asking for people that spoke German. Dad sent in a
reply that he spoke a dialect of Luxembourg, but that he thought he could get by. Fair enough, the Officials
replied and assigned him to a Lieutenant. The two of them were each issued a horse and given the task of
finding a place for the troops to bunk. To a man, everyone who was asked, said the troops could set up their
tents in their meadow or pasture, and were very quick to add that they had not wanted the war. When Dad
would relay the message to the Lieutenant, the officer wondered who we had been fighting, since everyone
they met against having war. After Dad got out of the army, he met and later married my Mother, who was
visiting her Uncle Henry and his wife, who lived in Belle Plain. They married on 6/5/1925, and settled down to
live happily ever after, for a brief time. They built a new house on a piece of property on my Grandfather’s
farm. My brother Carl was born 11/27/1927, me in 10/5/1931, my sister Eileen 12/31/1934.
A blissful little family until Mom developed a bad cough and fever in late 1936. It was diagnosed as TB. She
was sent to Glen Lake Sanitorium in early 1937. From time to time she was allowed brief visits home when
the disease went into periodic remission. She died there in March 1940.
6. Francis - January 8, 1925 – June 28, 1974
Francis was very friendly, worked hard, had fun, loved life and never got caught in his childhood pranks. He
liked animals, especially horses and was a good help to his dad. Putz started through Chaska High School.
Then he worked at home and hired out.
On September 15, 1948, he married Cornelia (Dolly) Jeurissen. This didn't really take the youngest boy away
from home as he built a home across the road from the folks high on the shore of Lake Susan. Here Francis
and Dolly raised a family. In 1967, it was found that Francis had a heart condition and so he had to slow his
pace. He quit his job at Minneapolis Moline and took a position as a Carver County Deputy Sheriff at
Chanhassen. He worked up to be a lieutenant in the department and was offered a captain's position but
declined it shortly before he died. On June 28, 1974, he died in his cruiser. He was very well liked by all and
has been sadly missed. Dolly died in 1986. Both are buried at St. Hubert’s.
gown with hoop skirt and bustle back. Mary Klein, sister of the groom was dressed in peacock blue, styled like
that of the maid of honor. Bernadette Klein, another sister of the groom, was dressed in Nile green made like
From "The Klein Family History 1815-1981" by Dorothy Klein Luers
7. Mary Leona - March 16, 1930
The Klein family was not quite complete yet and five years after the last boy, "Little Mary", made her
appearance. Needless to say this little gal got much attention from her family but did not spoil her. She was a
pretty, happy child who took everything in stride. She was a good student and enjoyed school. Her best friend
was Jimmy Pauly, who lived two farms down the road. Mary was her mother's delight and pride and joy. There
were many cousins to play with but soon she was married. On September 11, 1954, Clarence William
Schleicher (born on September 4, 1931 and son of Richard Carl Schleicher and Frances Susan Gregory), took
Mary as his bride. He had started working at Ford in January 1950 and retired from there on October 1, 1980, a
little over 30 years later. And suddenly life became very busy for Little Mary. So busy in fact that she forgot
age and today it is hard to pick Mary out from among her children.
They first lived in an apartment in St. Paul. After about 6 months, they bought a house in St. Anthony Park,
where they lived for 10 years. Then they built a house in Lino Lakes, where they lived for over 35 years. They
now live in a townhome in Blaine. They remain very active in their church helping with funeral luncheons,
bazaars, chicken dinners, etc., plus they keep busy doing things with their family. Clarence helped at church
for 15 years as an all around maintenance man in the mornings. He then worked a couple days a week at a
small engine repair shop. He now helps out at his son Ron's shop about one day a week. For several winters,
they went south in January and February. In the summer, they usually go to the lake near McGregor during the
week and come back home on Sundays. When the fish aren't biting, they enjoy working in two fenced-in
gardens where they raise berries and vegetables.
Aunt Mary's Memories of Her Family
Bernie
During WWII, Mr. Case (the people Bernie worked for) taught Bernie to drive a straight stick coupe they
had. He would let her drive it home on Sunday afternoons.
Once in a while in summer she would take Grandma, Aunt Florence and me for a ride (probably about 5
miles or so). She had to move the seat so far forward that I could crawl behind and stand up there.
We used to tease her about taking us for a “spin” around a big mud puddle in the road. We were driving near
Clear Springs and came to this big puddle on our side of the road. Instead of driving through and getting the
car muddy, she suddenly turned into the other lane and “spun” us around the puddle. That was probably the
most reckless driving she ever did!
Bernie always liked little kids. If the weather was nice on Sunday afternoons when she and Ed came home
and if someone else was there with kids she would carry the baby and had the other kids walk along down to
the lake. Mike Klein said she was very strict with them that (no one was to cross the road) until she got there
no matter how big they thought they were.
Bernie liked to sew and she made nearly all of her dresses. She always bought quality materials. The only
problem was that most of her clothes had to be dry- cleaned. (Not practical with small kids.) She would come
home Sundays all dressed up and inevitably the youngest niece or nephew would barf all over her, but you
never heard her complain.
Florence
When I was about 7 years old, Florence had stomach ulcers and was supposed to have complete bed rest for
about 6 months. Grandma had a bed brought down from upstairs and set it up in the front (living) room so she
wouldn’t have to use the stairs.
Florence would get depressed because she felt she was causing Grandma so much extra work. She was on a
very strict diet and had to have all her meals in bed. Warm water had to be brought in to wash and cold water
to drink and brush her teeth, and then everything had to be emptied again because we had no bathroom.
I did my part to try to entertain her by pestering her to play cards (Old Maid and Go to the Dump were all I
knew) or read to me. She hated playing cards, and now when I look back I wonder if that was the reason!
Also, we probably only had a couple of old books that she had read so often that I knew them from memory.
One day when she was particularly down, I decided to cheer her up by giving her a bouncy little ride. First of
all, the old beds we had didn’t have box springs and inner spring mattresses. The springs were coils of wire
held together by about 6-inch straight pieces of wire. The mattresses were made of about 5 inches of matting
that sagged in the middle.
I crawled under the bed to rise up where it sagged and give her a little bounce. She knew what I was going to
do so she leaned over the side of the bed to grab me by the butt, but I rose up at the same time and rolled her
out of bed.
Oh, Boy! Grandma heard her hit the floor and came running. I crawled out from the other side crying about
the same time Grandma came through the doorway yelling at me. Florence finally stopped laughing long
enough to tell Grandma to stop scolding me because it wasn’t really my fault - I was only trying to cheer her
up. I didn’t try that “cheer” anymore!
Laura
I lived with Laura and Wyman about 5 years after I graduated from high school. Usually Wyman was gone
evenings to Elks Club meetings, drum corp practice or in charge of bingo games downtown.
They did get one of the earliest TVs, but sometimes there wasn’t much on with only 2 or 3 channels, CBS,
NBC and later ABC and finally a local channel (no cable in those days!). Also, the programming wasn’t very
exact. Sometimes a program would start late or it would finish early and there was a blank space. They didn’t
have so many commercials to fill in because they were all live. You could be sure of 27 or 28 minutes in a
program in a half hour instead of the 19 minutes you get these days after they finish all of their commercials.
Anyway Laura and I used to play cribbage or canasta at the kitchen table nearly every evening after Leo was
in bed. This one night we were playing canasta and the pile had been “frozen” before anyone had taken it and
neither one could get it. Finally, we were down to only 1 or 2 cards left to draw and she discarded a 4. We had
159

oth thrown some 4’s before, but I had just drawn another 4 and had a pair. When I picked up the pile, she
exploded and threw her cards on the floor by the stove. It got very quiet after that and we went to bed. Don’t
remember who picked up the cards, but that was one time I regretted winning. By the next week we were back
to playing cards again, but it was a long time before either of us mentioned that game.
Joe
I always thought Joe was a great big brother. He didn’t tease me like Willis and Putz used to. I always sat
down on his lap or crawled all over him when he sat down until he broke his arm when I was in 1st grade.
Then Grandma scolded me and said I couldn’t do that anymore.
It was a cold winter day and, of course, the old car wouldn’t start. In those days all cars had a crank to turn it
over to get it started in cold weather (before jumper cables). Joe was trying to crank the car when the crank
spun back and hit his arm and broke it. I don’t remember how they got the car started to take him to the doctor
(or if he had to wait until the weather got warmer!).
When I was about in 4th grade, Joe bought me my first bike so that I could ride to school instead of walking
when the weather was nice. I think I was the only girl who rode a bike to school at St. Hubert’s (at least in the
early 1940’s). I was so proud of it. I think it was called a “Packard” and everyone teased me about the name
because there was a car of the same name.
I really appreciated that bike then, but even more later when I realize Joe only got paid $15 or $20 a month at
that time and I think the bike cost about $15.
Willis
Willis used to talk me into going northern trolling with him. This was way back before WWII when I was in
grade school! Of course, the only kind of boat Grandpa had was an old wooden rowboat. He didn’t have a
motor. (I was the motor!) He would row over to Schutrup’s shore and then I would row while he trolled. He
would trade off sometimes when I got tired, but I didn’t like trolling because I could never tell if I had a weed
or a strike. Besides I liked to row.
The other thing I didn’t like was the old open-faced reel he had with the cloth line. If you didn’t cast right,
the line would backlash and it always knotted up on me. Those reels weren’t like the open-faced ones they
now have. That is why I like my old cane pole. I catch 3-3 ½ lb. northern on that and have lots of fun!
In 1951, I was working for the Civil Service for the city of St. Paul, and I had put in an application to work
for the Secret Service (I thought it would be a great way to see the world), and I needed to go for my physical
at Fort Snelling. The only vehicle around was Willis’s new car. I had only been driving for a year. I managed
to talk him into letting me drive it by myself. I thought it was great that he let me do that, for he hadn’t let
anybody else drive it. By the time they said they would like to hire me I was already engaged and said no.
Putz
I was probably 5 or 6 years old when Jim Pauly gave me a tea set for Christmas. It came in a square yellow
box with red and white printing. The set consisted of 2 plates, 2 cups and saucers and a little tea pitcher with
cover. It was all made of clear gold glass. I had opened it the day before Christmas.
On Christmas morning when we always opened our gifts, Putz gave me the same kind of box so I thought he
was teasing and gave me the empty box. I would not take the cover off until everyone told me I had to open it.
Well, to my surprise there were 6 little water glasses and a pitcher in the same clear gold glass. I was
dumbfounded! I guess I was mostly embarrassed for thinking Putz was trying to trick me. I really felt bad
about it. I still have those glasses and pitcher in my dining room hutch now. (I think one of the boxes was
marked $.29.)
Putz also bought me a new pair of white ice skates after he got a job. I was about in 8th grade at that time.
We used to go down to the lake and shovel off a small area to skate if the snow wasn’t too deep. We had some
big old skates that were handed down from I don’t know where so I was thrilled to have a brand new pair all
my own.
How Laura and I embarrassed Putz
This happened at Annie Pauly’s wake. (Annie was Albert Pauly’s wife. He was Chanhassen’s grocer and
also Grandpa’s cousin.) Putz was working at Minneapolis Moline in Hopkins at the time. He started working
160

about 4:00 pm so he wanted to make an appearance at the wake and sign the book before going to work. He
was hoping not to meet the family because he was dressed in work clothes.
Laura and I wanted to go to the wake while it was still light so she held 4 month old Kevin (before child car
seats) and I drove to Hopkins. We were all dressed up - high heels, lightweight gloves, etc., she was also
wearing a short white coat. As we were walking up the sidewalk, she tripped and fell straight out. She fell flat
on her hands and just scratched the tip of her nose. (She looked like she was doing push-ups!) She never even
got her white coat smudged. We were glad no one else was around because we got a fit of laughing.
Just as we went in the door Putz was ready to leave so we tried telling him what happened. Of course, we
were laughing again and he was trying to shush us up before someone else came. He finally took Kevin in a
corner and talked to him until we quieted down, but we only laughed more to think we could embarrass him.
He finally just left to go work and we settled down, but we talked about that many times.
I don’t really remember much about my sisters living at home. By the time I was 4 or 5 years old, they had
already left home to work. They would only come home for weekends or just Sunday afternoons. They always
seemed more like my aunts who came for a visit.
(Editor’s Note: Thanks to Mary for sharing this interesting story about growing up in your family.)
