Farmer’s Market Group Meets
The regular summer meeting
of the River Hills Farmers’
board of directors was held on
Saturday, July 7th at Silex, MO.
Members present were Paul
and Kelly Harter of Mexico, Mr.
and Mrs. Mark Wagstaff of Silex,
Nathan and Sarah Price of
Warrenton, Kelly Klober of Whiteside,
and Gary Schneider of
Troy.
A number of matters were
discussed including the scheduling
of future activities for the
group. Group members Paul
Harter and Kelly Klober were invited
to judge the poultry show
at the Montgomery County Fair.
The group’s annual Fall Poultry
Fest will be held on September
15 instead of the originally
scheduled September 29 date.
Last year this was perhaps the
largest poultry themed event
of the Fall in Eastern Missouri.
The group will again be actively
involved with the Small Farm
Today show at Columbia, MO,
on the first weekend of November.
There they will display a
number of heirloom poultry
breeds and conduct teaching
activities. Family Farm 2008,
the group’s primary Spring
event, has been moved to the
earlier date of the third Saturday
of April. A tentative, early-
Spring Small Farmers’ Auction
was also discussed.
The Troy Market, on Main
Street, opened on Thursday,
July 19 and hours have since
changed from afternoon to
morning. They will be there
each Thursday from 8:30 to
12:30 through mid- to late-
September. The third Saturday
morning market in August
(at Silex) will again be free to
all 4-H and FFA members with
project birds and animals and
surplus goods and animals and
surplus goods and equipment
to sell.
The Fall business meeting
for the entire group was discussed
along with a potential
slate of officers for the next
year. A finance committee to
assess future funding and business
activities was appointed,
including members Mark Wagstaff,
Kelly Klober and Paul
Harter.
The markets are open to all
farmers and gardeners in Eastern
Missouri and across the
state. At a time when a great
many food items are literally
thousands of miles in transit
and gobbling up huge amounts
of energy to reach consumers,
these markets offer farm-fresh,
historically true, regional farm
production. For more information,
Breastfeeding,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10
infections of the respiratory and
urinary tracts.
Breastfeeding also reduces
a baby’s risk of environmentborne
illnesses, food sensitization
and allergies. In addition,
babies who are breastfed exclusively
for at least six months
have a reduced risk of obesity
later in life.
Mothers benefit as well.
Breastfeeding reduces postpartum
bleeding, helps the mother
return to her pre-pregnancy
weight sooner, boosts her immune
system and even reduces
a diabetic mother’s need for
insulin. Women who breastfeed
also have increased protection
from breast and ovarian cancers
and osteoporosis.
The percentage of Missouri
mothers choosing to breastfeed
their newborns has steadily
increased over the past few
years; however, many women
are still not breastfeeding their
babies. While more mothers
are initiating breastfeeding at
birth, breastfeeding rates drop
by more than half by the time
a baby is 6 months old. In Missouri,
32.6 percent of infants
were still being breastfed at
6 months of age in 2005. The
CDC breastfeeding goal for
6-month-old babies is 50 percent.
The American Academy of
Pediatrics recommends that
infants be exclusively breastfed
for approximately the first 6
months of life and continue to
be breastfed – while food is being
introduced – until the baby
is at least 1 year old.
“Community support is vital
to increase the number of women
breastfeeding their babies,”
Rogers said. “Family members,
friends and health care providers
need to encourage women
when they decide to breastfeed
their babies.”
