Welcome from <strong>the</strong> President<br />

Dear Friends and Guests,<br />

Welcome to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rodeo</strong> Spectacular 2008! I continue to be amazed by <strong>the</strong><br />

generosity and support from so many in our school community. Allow me to thank<br />

you for honoring us with your presence.<br />

Our auction chairs, ably assisted by nearly four hundred volunteers, have<br />

poured months of cre<strong>at</strong>ivity, organiz<strong>at</strong>ion and just plain hard work into cre<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Rodeo</strong> <strong>Roundup</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>. Let <strong>the</strong> spirit of <strong>the</strong> Wild West rope us into enjoying<br />

all <strong>the</strong> treasures up for bid. But let us not forget th<strong>at</strong> our students are <strong>the</strong> true<br />

treasures - for us and our world.<br />

Allow me to point out some o<strong>the</strong>r treasures this evening. I'd like to<br />

acknowledge our co-chairs, C<strong>at</strong>hi and David Brain, and Becky and Chris Herring.<br />

They have led an energetic and motiv<strong>at</strong>ed group of volunteers to present a celebr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

th<strong>at</strong> will please all of you cowpokes.<br />

To all of you who have contributed to Spectacular 2008 in so many ways, I<br />

extend my heartfelt gr<strong>at</strong>itude. Your unfailing contributions of time, talent and<br />

treasure make this event possible - and memorable - each year.<br />

Let <strong>the</strong> <strong>Roundup</strong> roll over you and draw you into <strong>the</strong> spirit of <strong>the</strong> evening<br />

with its playful and colorful display of gifts. Enjoy <strong>the</strong> companionship of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Rock</strong>hurst community and <strong>the</strong> excitement of <strong>the</strong> bidding. And please, be generous<br />

with your bids. When you open your checkbook <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> evening,<br />

you'll also be helping ensure th<strong>at</strong> current and future gener<strong>at</strong>ions of Hawklets<br />

receive <strong>the</strong> benefits of a Jesuit educ<strong>at</strong>ion - an experience th<strong>at</strong> challenges <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

seek excellence of mind, heart and soul as <strong>the</strong>y become leaders in learning and<br />

Howdy pardners and welcome to <strong>Rodeo</strong> <strong>Roundup</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>!<br />

Thank you for joining us for <strong>the</strong> 38th Spectacular - <strong>the</strong> longest running<br />

charity auction in <strong>the</strong> Kansas City metropolitan area.<br />

It takes <strong>the</strong> chapped hands and saddle sores of many dedic<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

volunteers to make this event nuttin’ short of Spectacular! We started<br />

off this c<strong>at</strong>tle drive with five successful gift g<strong>at</strong>hering parties, a<br />

spirited Men’s Night Out, a rip roarin’ launch of an expanded RbaY,<br />

and a lovely Mass followed by vittles and coffee (aka <strong>the</strong> Breakfast<br />

of Champions) for our sportsmen. Along with <strong>the</strong>se events were<br />

behind <strong>the</strong> scenes efforts of plenty of ranch hands - multitudes of<br />

meetings, phone calls and solicit<strong>at</strong>ions, hours of time in <strong>the</strong> Auction<br />

corral and last, but not least, a dozen plus work days <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wirken’s<br />

Blacksmith Shop! It is time to kick up our heels and have a rip<br />

roarin’ good time - we are <strong>at</strong> trail’s end - Auction night!<br />

We want to give a big tip of <strong>the</strong> h<strong>at</strong> to all volunteers and also to<br />

our generous community sponsors and donors who have provided all<br />

<strong>the</strong>se amazing auction items. You are <strong>the</strong> bronco-busting best!<br />

Fund-A-Need for Financial Aid<br />

St. Ign<strong>at</strong>ius Loyola, founder of <strong>the</strong> first Jesuit <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> in 1548, insisted<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> school be sufficiently endowed so all who qualified for admission could<br />

be offered a free educ<strong>at</strong>ion. How wonderful if <strong>Rock</strong>hurst <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> would be<br />

fully endowed so th<strong>at</strong> all of our students could <strong>at</strong>tend for free! Until th<strong>at</strong> day,<br />

however, we rely on <strong>the</strong> generosity of our benefactors to provide financial assistance<br />

to those students who o<strong>the</strong>rwise could not <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>Rock</strong>hurst.<br />

Please join those benefactors by raising your bid number during tonight’s<br />

Fund-a-Need for financial aid. Your gift will make a difference like it has for<br />

Austin Althaber, a senior who has been <strong>the</strong> recipient of financial aid during his<br />

four years <strong>at</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>hurst.<br />

Let us tell you a little about Austin Althaber........<br />

Austin is a senior honor student. He has played for<br />

four years on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>hurst <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> football team<br />

and is a member of <strong>the</strong> Senior Jazz Band. Austin lives<br />

in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and drives one hour to school and back each and<br />

every day. As part of his work grant responsibilities, Austin works alongside his<br />

f<strong>at</strong>her, a <strong>Rock</strong>hurst alum, in <strong>the</strong> concession stand <strong>at</strong> various <strong>Rock</strong>hurst sporting<br />

events.<br />

Austin is <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Rock</strong>hurst student to serve as a hospice volunteer <strong>at</strong><br />

Kansas City Hospice House for his senior service project. He became motiv<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

to be a hospice volunteer after his grandf<strong>at</strong>her was a p<strong>at</strong>ient <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> facility<br />

this past summer. Austin plans to <strong>at</strong>tend medical school after college and his<br />

experience with Kansas City Hospice House helped guide <strong>the</strong> type of medicine<br />

he would like to practice - Geri<strong>at</strong>rics.<br />

Austin is gr<strong>at</strong>eful to all <strong>the</strong> benefactors who made it possible for him to be<br />

able to <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>Rock</strong>hurst. I think we can be assured th<strong>at</strong> those same benefactors<br />

are quite proud to see <strong>the</strong>ir contributions coming back to society many-fold<br />

through young men like Austin who are truly Men for O<strong>the</strong>rs!<br />

Live Auction<br />

The Live Auction will begin <strong>at</strong> 7:45 p.m. and<br />

continue until all items have been sold.<br />

Purchases are made by bid number. The<br />

auctioneer’s decision will be final. Successful<br />

bidders must furnish <strong>the</strong> “Ring Men” with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

bid number immedi<strong>at</strong>ely after each sale for<br />

<strong>the</strong> clerk’s record. Successful bidders will be<br />

notified <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir table. Live Auction packages<br />

cannot be altered, changed or customized<br />

beyond wh<strong>at</strong> is described in <strong>the</strong> c<strong>at</strong>alog. ALL<br />

AUCTION ITEMS AND SERVICES MUST BE<br />

The Silent Auction booths open upon arrival.<br />

Each has a different closing time; <strong>the</strong>se times<br />

are noted <strong>at</strong> each booth and in <strong>the</strong> c<strong>at</strong>alog.<br />

Each increase must equal or exceed <strong>the</strong> minimum<br />

increase figure st<strong>at</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> bid sheet<br />

to constitute a valid bid. Items in <strong>the</strong> Silent<br />

Auction may be bid on until th<strong>at</strong> section is<br />

closed. Enter your bid number next to <strong>the</strong><br />

appropri<strong>at</strong>e bid amount.<br />

Guarantee Your Purchase<br />

See an item in <strong>the</strong> Silent Auction th<strong>at</strong> you<br />

really want? To own an item, place your bid<br />

number in <strong>the</strong> Guaranteed Purchase Box <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> bid sheet. You have paid a premium<br />

to purchase <strong>the</strong> item. This supersedes<br />

Pay <strong>at</strong> Bank<br />

Pay for all purchases <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank. Cash,<br />

checks, MasterCard and Visa accepted.<br />

Gift Certific<strong>at</strong>es<br />

Gift certific<strong>at</strong>es should be picked up <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bank after payment. Buyers are responsible<br />

for finalizing all arrangements with <strong>the</strong> donors<br />

for items and services. ALL CERTIFICATES<br />

EXPIRE APRIL 19, 2009, UNLESS OTHER-<br />

Pick-Up of Purchased Items<br />

marked PAID by <strong>the</strong> Bank.<br />

Pick up of Large Items<br />

Pick up large items on Sunday, April 20, from<br />

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. <strong>at</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>hurst. Staff will<br />

help with large items. <strong>Rock</strong>hurst will make no<br />

deliveries.<br />

Unclaimed Items<br />

<strong>Rock</strong>hurst is not responsible for items not<br />

picked up within 24 hours after <strong>the</strong> auction.<br />

Tax Laws on Charitable Don<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

Written substanti<strong>at</strong>ion from <strong>the</strong> tax-exempt<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion is required for all deductions of<br />

$250 or more claimed by an individual.<br />

Separ<strong>at</strong>e payments generally will be tre<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

as separ<strong>at</strong>e contributions and will not be<br />

aggreg<strong>at</strong>ed for <strong>the</strong> purposes of applying <strong>the</strong><br />

$250 threshold. Regul<strong>at</strong>ions do not impose<br />

an inform<strong>at</strong>ion-reported requirement upon <strong>the</strong><br />

charity; <strong>the</strong> responsibility is <strong>the</strong> taxpayer’s.<br />

However, each buyer will receive a st<strong>at</strong>ement<br />

itemizing all purchases after <strong>the</strong> auction. The<br />

deductible amount is <strong>the</strong> price paid over <strong>the</strong><br />

design<strong>at</strong>ed value of <strong>the</strong> item. The nondeductible<br />

portion of each dinner reserv<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

is $50.


Auction History<br />

While <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rock</strong>hurst Spectacular Auction received its current name in 1994, its roots<br />

go back to January 1970, when John Bolin, Bob Dugan, Louise Grovenburg and Bob Clune<br />

headed up <strong>the</strong> first auction of <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>rs and F<strong>at</strong>hers Clubs to benefit Sale-O-Rama. From<br />

this early success, <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>hers Club, with Joe Donnelly as president, organized an auction<br />

known as “Concern About Our Christian Heritage in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion,” or CACHE. The F<strong>at</strong>hers Club<br />

staged CACHE annually until 1987 when it became a collabor<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>Rock</strong>hurst<br />

community, including parents, faculty, staff, alumni and students. In 1994, <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong><br />

auction was changed from CACHE to Spectacular.<br />

way, added to <strong>the</strong> rich traditions of <strong>Rock</strong>hurst <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
