Welcome from the President 

Dear Friends and Guests, 

Welcome to the Rodeo Spectacular 2008! I continue to be amazed by the 

generosity and support from so many in our school community. Allow me to thank 

you for honoring us with your presence. 

Our auction chairs, ably assisted by nearly four hundred volunteers, have 

poured months of creativity, organization and just plain hard work into creating the 

Rodeo Roundup at the Rock. Let the spirit of the Wild West rope us into enjoying 

all the treasures up for bid. But let us not forget that our students are the true 

treasures - for us and our world. 

Allow me to point out some other treasures this evening. I'd like to 

acknowledge our co-chairs, Cathi and David Brain, and Becky and Chris Herring. 

They have led an energetic and motivated group of volunteers to present a celebration 

that will please all of you cowpokes. 

To all of you who have contributed to Spectacular 2008 in so many ways, I 

extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your unfailing contributions of time, talent and 

treasure make this event possible - and memorable - each year. 

Let the Roundup roll over you and draw you into the spirit of the evening 

with its playful and colorful display of gifts. Enjoy the companionship of the 

Rockhurst community and the excitement of the bidding. And please, be generous 

with your bids. When you open your checkbook at the end of the evening, 

you'll also be helping ensure that current and future generations of Hawklets 

receive the benefits of a Jesuit education - an experience that challenges them to 

seek excellence of mind, heart and soul as they become leaders in learning and 

service for Kansas City and beyond.

Howdy pardners and welcome to Rodeo Roundup at the Rock! 

Thank you for joining us for the 38th Spectacular - the longest running 

charity auction in the Kansas City metropolitan area. 

It takes the chapped hands and saddle sores of many dedicated 

volunteers to make this event nuttin’ short of Spectacular! We started 

off this cattle drive with five successful gift gathering parties, a 

spirited Men’s Night Out, a rip roarin’ launch of an expanded RbaY, 

and a lovely Mass followed by vittles and coffee (aka the Breakfast 

of Champions) for our sportsmen. Along with these events were 

behind the scenes efforts of plenty of ranch hands - multitudes of 

meetings, phone calls and solicitations, hours of time in the Auction 

corral and last, but not least, a dozen plus work days at the Wirken’s 

Blacksmith Shop! It is time to kick up our heels and have a rip 

roarin’ good time - we are at trail’s end - Auction night! 

We want to give a big tip of the hat to all volunteers and also to 

our generous community sponsors and donors who have provided all 

these amazing auction items. You are the bronco-busting best!

You’ve got it - the grand prize for this year’s raffle is CASH! Don’t be disappointed 

that this year you won’t win the car that has been the traditional Spectacular 

raffle prize. You’ll now have the option of buying the car of your choice or just 

putting the cash away for a rainy day! 

Tickets priced at $100 will be available for purchase from Rockhurst students. 

Three finalists’ tickets will be drawn and a fourth ticket will be sold to the highest 

bidder during the Live Auction. The winner of the $25,000 will be the first selected 

from among these final ticket holders. 

The second, third, and fourth place finalists will win the following prizes, 

worth around $500 or more: A private wine tasting for up to 12 people consisting 

of 8 single vintage, private estate wines imported exclusively from small vineyards 

around the world; A Crown Center Package including a night at the 

Westin Hotel and dinner for two at Benton’s, complete with wine, tax and tip; or 

An Ozark condo - 3 days, 2 nights in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath fully furnished condo, 

complete with boat slip.

Fund-A-Need for Financial Aid 

St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the first Jesuit High School in 1548, insisted 

that the school be sufficiently endowed so all who qualified for admission could 

be offered a free education. How wonderful if Rockhurst High School would be 

fully endowed so that all of our students could attend for free! Until that day, 

however, we rely on the generosity of our benefactors to provide financial assistance 

to those students who otherwise could not attend Rockhurst. 

Please join those benefactors by raising your bid number during tonight’s 

Fund-a-Need for financial aid. Your gift will make a difference like it has for 

Austin Althaber, a senior who has been the recipient of financial aid during his 

four years at Rockhurst. 

Let us tell you a little about Austin Althaber........ 

Austin is a senior honor student. He has played for 

four years on the Rockhurst High School football team 

and is a member of the Senior Jazz Band. Austin lives 

in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and drives one hour to school and back each and 

every day. As part of his work grant responsibilities, Austin works alongside his 

father, a Rockhurst alum, in the concession stand at various Rockhurst sporting 

events. 

Austin is the first Rockhurst student to serve as a hospice volunteer at 

Kansas City Hospice House for his senior service project. He became motivated 

to be a hospice volunteer after his grandfather was a patient at the facility 

this past summer. Austin plans to attend medical school after college and his 

experience with Kansas City Hospice House helped guide the type of medicine 

he would like to practice - Geriatrics. 

Austin is grateful to all the benefactors who made it possible for him to be 

able to attend Rockhurst. I think we can be assured that those same benefactors 

are quite proud to see their contributions coming back to society many-fold 

through young men like Austin who are truly Men for Others!

There are no refunds, exchanges or substitutions 

unless noted otherwise in the catalog. 

Vouchers have no cash value. 

Catalogs, Table and Bid Numbers 

Table and bid numbers will be assigned at 

check-in where catalogs are received. 

Purchases 

Transactions are conducted by bid number. 

You are responsible for all purchases made 

on your bid number. Values set forth opposite 

some of the items being auctioned are estimates 

only and are not warranted by 

Spectacular for tax purposes or general value. 

Live Auction 

The Live Auction will begin at 7:45 p.m. and 

continue until all items have been sold. 

Purchases are made by bid number. The 

auctioneer’s decision will be final. Successful 

bidders must furnish the “Ring Men” with their 

bid number immediately after each sale for 

the clerk’s record. Successful bidders will be 

notified at their table. Live Auction packages 

cannot be altered, changed or customized 

beyond what is described in the catalog. ALL 

AUCTION ITEMS AND SERVICES MUST BE 

USED WITHIN ONE YEAR. 

Silent Auction 

The Silent Auction booths open upon arrival. 

Each has a different closing time; these times 

are noted at each booth and in the catalog. 

Each increase must equal or exceed the minimum 

increase figure stated on the bid sheet 

to constitute a valid bid. Items in the Silent 

Auction may be bid on until that section is 

closed. Enter your bid number next to the 

appropriate bid amount. 

Guarantee Your Purchase 

See an item in the Silent Auction that you 

really want? To own an item, place your bid 

number in the Guaranteed Purchase Box at 

the top of the bid sheet. You have paid a premium 

to purchase the item. This supersedes 

any bid that might be placed on the item.

General Auction Information 

Vacation Homes 

Vacation homes are not transferable and are 

donated for adults or families only under the 

terms and limitations described in the catalog. 

Pay at Bank 

Pay for all purchases at the Bank. Cash, 

checks, MasterCard and Visa accepted. 

Gift Certificates 

Gift certificates should be picked up at the 

Bank after payment. Buyers are responsible 

for finalizing all arrangements with the donors 

for items and services. ALL CERTIFICATES 

EXPIRE APRIL 19, 2009, UNLESS OTHER- 

WISE SPECIFIED. 

Pick-Up of Purchased Items 

NO ITEM MAY LEAVE THE PREMISES 

WITHOUT BEING PAID IN FULL. Staff will 

be posted at the exit checking for receipts 

marked PAID by the Bank. 

Pick up of Large Items 

Pick up large items on Sunday, April 20, from 

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Rockhurst. Staff will 

help with large items. Rockhurst will make no 

deliveries. 

Unclaimed Items 

Rockhurst is not responsible for items not 

picked up within 24 hours after the auction. 

Tax Laws on Charitable Donations 

Written substantiation from the tax-exempt 

organization is required for all deductions of 

$250 or more claimed by an individual. 

Separate payments generally will be treated 

as separate contributions and will not be 

aggregated for the purposes of applying the 

$250 threshold. Regulations do not impose 

an information-reported requirement upon the 

charity; the responsibility is the taxpayer’s. 

However, each buyer will receive a statement 

itemizing all purchases after the auction. The 

deductible amount is the price paid over the 

designated value of the item. The nondeductible 

portion of each dinner reservation 

is $50.

Auction History 

While the Rockhurst Spectacular Auction received its current name in 1994, its roots 

go back to January 1970, when John Bolin, Bob Dugan, Louise Grovenburg and Bob Clune 

headed up the first auction of the Mothers and Fathers Clubs to benefit Sale-O-Rama. From 

this early success, the Fathers Club, with Joe Donnelly as president, organized an auction 

known as “Concern About Our Christian Heritage in Education,” or CACHE. The Fathers Club 

staged CACHE annually until 1987 when it became a collaboration of the entire Rockhurst 

community, including parents, faculty, staff, alumni and students. In 1994, the name of the 

auction was changed from CACHE to Spectacular.

way, added to the rich traditions of Rockhurst High School.
