Indoor Youth Soccer League planned at Y
The Southington YMCA Indoor
Youth Soccer League is an
opportunity for boys and g rls n
grades 1-9 to increase their aerobic
fitness level, actlieve personal accomplishments
and meet new
friends.
Although competition and winning
are important concepts to be
elarned in life, the program is struc-
tured so that game scores are not
kept in order to emphasize individual
success, but to develop communicat,on
skills, strengthen indtvidual's
self esteem and to just have
fun, the YMCA said.
The YMCA is committed to the
development of the whole person,
said Bill Skinner, the YMCA Director
of Health and Physical Educa-
tion. "As a result, we try to incorporate
the concepts ofparticipation,
teamwork, good sportsmanship
and fair play, physical fitness, and
skill development."
Registration for league play is
The Southington High school
girls field hockey team will close
its season Friday at 3:30 p.m.when
it hosts South Windsor at the local
field.
The Lady Knights have come a
long way since the season started
in early September.
The locals came through with
their most impressive win of the
campaign last Friday when they
whitewashed a good Maloney High
Spartanettes 2-0 at the local field.
That victory was the third in
nine decisions while two other
battles ended in ties.
The Kights defense rose to
every occasion in keeping Maloney
off the scoreboard despite the
Spartanettes wide territorial edge
in play during most of the game.
The Knights took advantage of
their few scoring opportunit'les and
took a 1-0 lead midway*in the
second half when Dawn Casarella
booted in a rebound past Maloney
goalie Laura Quirk.
Sue Hahl received an asslst on
the goal because she took a shot
from 10 feet out that was stopped
by the Maloney netminder and
Casarella scored on the rebound.
The Knights utilized a quick
break several minutes later to score
an insurance goal.
Kris Mach disp!ayed an exceptional
stickhandling exhibition
for more than 20 yards and then
sent a long pass to left winger
Kathy Zering who blasted a 10yarder
that was partially blocked by
the Maloney netminder.
However, the impact of the
rebound was so hard that the ball
went into the net.
The Knights defense played
hard when it counted most and.
Southington oalie Chris Malarney
was outstanding again as she stopped
14 shots, some on the spec-
tacular side.
The locals only had opportunities
to take four shots throughout
the battle and scored twice.
Knights head coach Doreen
Leahy said, "We were in the right
place at the right time and Maloney
had the better scoring opportunities
and dominated until the final 20
minutes."
The Knights and Maloney played
a 2-2 deadlock in the earlier
meeting.
