Whalers Report
By V.E.Takesian
staff writer
The Hartford Whalers
must tighen up their
defensive units if they
are going to move up in
the tough Adams Divi-
.,,ion standings this weekend
when they play a
home and home series
w th the always tough
Buffalo Sabres
The Whalers with a
record of 1-2-1 and winless
in their last three
NHL battles have given
up 22 goals while scoring
15 in the four
games.
The nearly six goals
per game defensive record
s simply too many
says Whalers coach Jack
Evans and "we are devo-
because some of the
games are scheduled six
or seven days apart.
Right now, Kaiton
says the players seem to
be tired of working and
practicing on the same
things every day . As a
result, it has been hard
for the players to stay
interested in practicing.
After doing the same
thing day after day it
causes the players to lose
their enthusiasm and
drive for practice, he
points out.
The ratio of practice
time to games is so
unbalanced right now ,
one can see how he
players feel. They want
to start an a ggressive,
game-like routine.
Looking" ahead the
where they usually skate,
check asnd score. All the
"tips" they earn as volunteer
waiters will help
eye health and safety
programs sponsored by
the Connecticut Society
to PrevEnt Blindness.
"Though this i the
fifth year we've held the
dinner, it's the first tune
we've ever put it on the
ice" says John McGinley,
the Society's T p A
Whaler chairman."We're
trying to capture the excitement
era real hockey
game-- complete w th
messages flashing on the
scoreboard, an organist
and free Whalers
souvenirs."
The annual event has
become one of the most
successful
tlngcons derabld time to Whalersare scheduled to ttp-a-celebvrity dinners
.ehminating the mistake,s, play 17 games in 28 day in the natio.n,'according
he added.
The f st battle with
the Sabres will be played
in Buffalo Friday at 7;30
p.m. and this game will
be televised by W_HCT
TV Chaunel 18.
The two NHL rivals
wdl battle again Saturday
at 7.35 p.m. at the
H trfford Civic Cenler.
The Whalers will
ho t the vastly improved
Pm. burgh Penguins
next Tuesday at 7:35
p.m. in Hartford.
Unbeaten Pittsburgh
t off to i s best NHL
,,ca,,on start in history
w rh six straight wins
and were in first place
Tuesday in the Patrick
Division. Led by Marie
I.emieux, the Penguins
have scored 34 goals and
urrendered 20 in six ice
battles.
By the way, the
Southington Parks and
Recreanon department is
sponsoring a bus trip for
th s battle and interested
l U'tles are requested to
contact Recreation Director
Bill Masci if they are
interested in going.
Chuck Kaiton, outstanding
radio voice of
the Whalers since the
1979-80 season, says it
is hard to decide whether
the Whalers have been
blc.,,sed or cursed by the
league's schedule maker
because only six games
during a three week permd
was set for the local
club. So, for the players,
the schedule may be
looked upon as a curse
Star game. Then in
Febma there are only
11 games. Imbalance
seemns to be tl e way of
the WhalerS" schedule
this year.
We believe the Whalers
will de'finitely improve
their offense and
defense because they will"
be bus5• in November
playing 12 games in 29
days, This type of schedule
will enable the players to
sharpen their overall
skills and regain their
eorrfidenee that was a
dominating factor in
winning- 3)tsyoff berth'
for the Stanley Cup last
Spring.
Top scorers
To date John Anderson
with three goals and
three assists leads the
Whalers in scoring with
six points while Paul
Lawless and Captain
Ron Francis also have
three goals and 4 points
each.
