FOREWORD This voiume is the seventh in the series .presenting comprehensive information pertaining to number of offices, deposits and credit of scheduled commercial banks as on the last Friday of December 1976 and December 1977, collected under the Basic Statistical Returns system introduced in December 1972. Earlier in March 1980, a brochure giving the summary results of the December ‘1977 survey was published. The tabulated results for December 1976 and December 1977 were also supplied to individual banks as. part of the feed back information. This printed volume, which presents a complete picture of the results of the surveys for December 1976 and’ 1977, has been prepared in the Credit Planning Cell in close collaboration with the Banking Division of the Economic Department and the Computer and the Data Processing Divisions of the Department of Statistics. . The Statistics presented in this Volume are based mainly on the data on deposits and credit collected through the Basic Statistical Returns 1 and 2 from offices of scheduied commercial banks and pertain to the last Friday of December 1976 and 1977. The revised hand-book of instructions for BSR 1 and .2 came into force with effect from December 1977 survey; as such the occupational patterns’ for the periods December 1976 and December 1977 are not strictly comparable. Basic Statistical Return 1 provides information on credit in two parts, viz., Part A and Part B. Part A covers accounts with credit limit of over Rs, 10,000 and. Part B covers accounts with credit limit of Rs. 10,000 and less. In Part A ,-return, particulars of the type of account, organisation, occupation, guarantee status/priority status, rate of interest, credit limit and amount outstanding are reported for each account with credit limit of over Rs; lO,OO& In Part B, data are collected for accounts with individual credit limits of Rs. 10,000 and less classified according to two criteria viz., o.ccupa- tion and guarantee status/priority status. In Basic Statistical Return 2, each office is required to furnish details in respect of its deposits according to type viz., current, savings and term. The data received through these two returns for December 1976 and 1977 have been processed and the detailed results are presented in this volume under four ‘different sections. EXPLANATORY NOTES Section 1 gives a table on general information on banking and also the results of BSR 1 and 2 in a summary form. Detailed results are presented in the subsequent sections. Section 2 presents data on the regional distribution of total deposits and credit. Section 3 provides the break-up of deposits according to type whereas in Section 4, tables classifying outstanding credit according to different occupational and other categories are given. Of the 26,958 offices of scheduled commercial banks functioning in December 1977, BSR 1 returns were received from 25,001 offices with total credit of Rs. 15,144 crores (inclusive of due from banks and bills rediscounted under the New Bill Market Scheme) and BSR 2 returns from all offices with aggregate deposits (excluding inter-bank deposits) of Rs. 21,365 crores. For improving the overall coverage, data on total credit in respect. of significant defaulting branches were substituted from the Monthly Return on ‘Aggregate Deposits and Gross Bank Credit’ received from the head offices of banks. These data have been included in the tabula- tions of total credit given in Section 2. However, detailed classification of credit’ being not available in respect of the defaulting branches, ‘the total of credit as given in the detailed tables in Section 4 would be lower than the totals in the tables in Section 2. Another important difference between the figures presented in Section 2 and those in Section 4 is in respect -of the regional break-up of credit. The BSR Scheme, introduced in Decem- ber 1 1.972, provides for identification of the district where the unit availing of the credit is located as distinct from the district where the bank office sanctioning and operating the account is located. This information is available only from Part A of BSR 1 i.e., in respect of accounts with credit limit of over Rs. 10,000. In Part B which gives consolidated information for accounts with credit limit of Rs. 10,000 and less, it is assumed ‘that the credit is utilised in the same district in which the sanctioning office is located. (In other words, in the case of Part B accounts, the district of sanction and district of utilisation are the same.) The regional break-up of credit, given in Section 2 is according to the district of sanction (i.e., where the office sanctioning and operating the account is located) while the corresponding break-up in Section 4 is according to the district of utilisation (i.e., where the unit utilising the credit is located). Therefore, the state-wise totals in Section 2 will not agree with those in Section 4.
