THE Pakistan Engineers Forum in<br />
<strong>Qatar</strong> (PEF) inducted a <strong>new</strong> executive<br />
committee (excom) for the next<br />
session 2011-2013 at the grand<br />
finale meeting held at Diplomatic<br />
Club on Monday.<br />
Badar Sohail Khan will be the<br />
<strong>new</strong> president while the other<br />
office-bearers include M Raheel<br />
Khan (vice-president), Salman bin<br />
Tayyab (general-secretary), M<br />
Javed Iqbal (joint secretary) and<br />
Faisal Rasheed Velvi (treasurer).<br />
Awwab Obaidullah, Mohammad<br />
Riaz, Mahmood Ali Khan,<br />
Mohammad Yo<strong>use</strong>f and Rehan<br />
Ansari have been inducted as members<br />
of the executive committee.<br />
Riyaz A Bakali will act as IT consultant.<br />
M Tahir Jamil and Naeem<br />
Mahmood will be advisors.<br />
Pakistan’s Ambassador <strong>to</strong> <strong>Qatar</strong><br />

Khanzada was the chief guest.<br />
The Pakistani envoy thanked all<br />
the members for expressing their<br />
confidence in him.<br />
He laid out his vision for the next<br />
two years <strong>to</strong> take the PEF organisation<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>new</strong> heights by building on<br />
the successes of previous PEF<br />
teams. He stressed that special<br />
attention will be given <strong>to</strong>wards<br />
“image building of Pakistan”.<br />
“We will work <strong>to</strong> build ties with<br />
locals,” the envoy said. He noted<br />
that other Pakistani professionals<br />
will also be brought <strong>to</strong> the fold and<br />
families will be involved in PEF<br />
activities.<br />
Earlier, in his welcome address,<br />
the outgoing PEF president<br />
Nadeem Ahmed Bashir expressed<br />
his gratitude <strong>to</strong> all PEF members,<br />
the Pakistan embassy and all<br />
other supporters, including the<br />
local print media for their help<br />
and assistance. He paid tributes<br />
<strong>to</strong> community advisor M Ajmal<br />
Chaudhary for his services <strong>to</strong> the<br />
forum. He spoke in length about<br />
the achievements of the outgoing<br />
excom that <strong>to</strong>ok charge in 2009.<br />
He particularly thanked TNG<br />
Kindergarten and Pakistan<br />
International Airlines for helping<br />
in PEF’s relief campaign <strong>to</strong> the<br />
flood victims in Pakistan. He said,<br />

DVORAK’S much-acclaimed Eighth<br />
Symphony would fill the Opera<br />
Ho<strong>use</strong> during the <strong>Qatar</strong> Philharmonic<br />
Orchestra’s performance at<br />
Katara on Saturday.<br />
Written in less than one month<br />
and first performed in 1890, the Czech<br />
composer’s piece draws heavily<br />
from the folk music of his homeland<br />
and is recognised for being joyful.<br />
The evening will include a much<br />
anticipated performance by Bassam<br />
Saba, who will play Daniel<br />
Schnyder’s Concer<strong>to</strong> for Ney. This is<br />
the first concer<strong>to</strong> written for the<br />
Ney, a woodwind instrument which<br />
features Arabic music. An endblown<br />
flute of cane, the Ney dates<br />
back <strong>to</strong> more than 5,000 years. Ney<br />
players are present in wall paintings<br />
in the Egyptian pyramids and<br />
instruments which have been<br />
unearthed at Ur.<br />
Lebanon’s Saba is a leading figure<br />
of Arabic music. Saba studied the<br />
Ney, Oud and violin at the Lebanon<br />
National Conserva<strong>to</strong>ry. He is regarded<br />
by the world as a true pioneer of<br />
the Ney as well as Arabic interpretation<br />
of the western flute. Saba has<br />
<strong>to</strong>ured extensively with Fairouz,<br />
Marcel Khalife and Simon Shaheen<br />
Korean maestro Nanse Gum.<br />
and has worked with artists like<br />
Santana, Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Alicia<br />
Keys and Herbie Hancock.<br />
In a true international style of the<br />
<strong>Qatar</strong> Philharmonic Orchestra, the<br />
evening will be conducted by the<br />
dynamic Korean maestro Nanse<br />
Gum. In 1980, he was appointed<br />
Conduc<strong>to</strong>r of the Korea Philharmonic<br />
Orchestra and he is currently<br />
Artistic Direc<strong>to</strong>r of the Incheon<br />
Philharmonic Orchestra.<br />
Kurt Meister, Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r of<br />
the Philharmonic, said the programme<br />
showcased old and <strong>new</strong><br />
music as well as a <strong>new</strong> interpretation<br />
of ancient instrument.<br />
The next performance of the <strong>Qatar</strong><br />
Philharmonic Orchestra will be held<br />
on June 25.<br />

the outgoing vice-president, hosted<br />

anecdotes. S Naseeruddin and M<br />
Azimuddin assisted him in distributing<br />
gifts.<br />
Uvais Qidwai officially launched<br />
the Robotic Club and urged the<br />
parents <strong>to</strong> encourage their wards<br />

THE Doha Trade Fair, which concluded<br />
on Tuesday, has attracted<br />
over 222,000 visi<strong>to</strong>rs. The exhibition<br />
was organised by the <strong>Qatar</strong><br />
Tourism Authority in association<br />
with q.media events.<br />
Meanwhile, Mohammed Raoufuddin<br />
Rizwan, a Doha resident was<br />
adjudged the winner of the monopoly<br />
competition. He was handed<br />
over a <strong>new</strong> Volkswagen car by<br />
Khaled Zebib, Marketing Manager<br />
at Saad Buzwair Au<strong>to</strong>motive.<br />
“It was such a thrilling and<br />
exciting experience. I love this<br />
game and I am proud that I was<br />
able <strong>to</strong> play on the board of the<br />
biggest Monopoly in the world<br />
and I am more than excited that I<br />
have won this car,” Rizwan said.<br />
According <strong>to</strong> the authorities, the<br />
number of visi<strong>to</strong>rs and the quality<br />
of this year’s edition under the<br />
theme ‘Shop the World’, surpassed<br />
the organisers’ and the exhibi<strong>to</strong>rs’<br />
expectations alike. The 10day<br />
exhibition, which <strong>to</strong>ok place at<br />
the Doha Exhibitions Center,<br />
recorded a huge number of visi<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
who came <strong>to</strong> check out the latest<br />
cultural products on display.<br />

<strong>Qatar</strong> <strong>Tribune</strong>. The envoy also<br />
honoured Pakistan Education<br />
Centre’s two students, Faraz Khan<br />
and Muhammad Aftab Bashir, and<br />
their men<strong>to</strong>r Gauhar Hameed who<br />
bagged first position in the Robot<br />
Programming and Computing<br />
Contest organised by the <strong>Qatar</strong><br />
University recently. Around 70<br />
teams from 55 local, independent<br />
and international schools <strong>to</strong>ok part<br />
in the event.<br />
Khanzada appreciated the activities<br />
of the forum and urged the<br />
<strong>new</strong> executive committee <strong>to</strong> work<br />
for increasing the number of<br />
forum members. The envoy also<br />
suggested a number of pro-<br />
<strong>to</strong>mers, who have expressed their<br />
satisfaction of what was showcased<br />
during the fair. Our main aim for<br />
the year was <strong>to</strong> enhance and<br />
upscale the exhibition and I believe<br />
we have succeeded in doing so.<br />
Visi<strong>to</strong>rs appreciated lively entertainment<br />
and the overall presentation.<br />
As organisers, we worked<br />
hard <strong>to</strong> bring the best quality products<br />
<strong>to</strong> the exhibition, <strong>to</strong> ensure<br />
consumer-protection and <strong>to</strong> assure<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers that they are buying<br />
authentic and high-quality products<br />

information by inviting guest<br />
speakers or through in-ho<strong>use</strong> presentations,<br />
develop programmes <strong>to</strong><br />
deliver effective services and<br />
knowledge <strong>to</strong> members, facilitate<br />
learning through interaction with<br />
professionals from other disciplines,<br />
build communication and<br />
leadership skills, provide a platform<br />
for Pakistani engineers for<br />
social and technical exchange in<br />
the country and beyond, promote<br />
social and cultural activities and<br />
improve the image of the Pakistani<br />
community in <strong>Qatar</strong> and liaison<br />
between the members and the<br />
Pakistani embassy in Doha.<br />
