THE Hamad Medical
Corporation (HMC) will be the
first centre in the world to combine
two new technologies, the
Atreus system and the Mirasol
system, in processing blood
components from donations.
The HMC Department of
Laboratory Medicine and
Pathology will start using the
unique Atreus system in July.
The Atreus blood processing
system is the first laboratory
technology that automates the
steps of blood processing in a
single system.
Speaking on the occasion of
the ‘World Blood Donor Day’ on
Tuesday, Dr Ajayeb al Nabet,
chairperson of the department
of laboratory medicine and
pathology at the HMC, said,
“We have focused our efforts to
enhance the blood transfer
process in Qatar using the latest
technologies in accordance
with the highest international
standards.”
“From the beginning of next
month, we will be the first centre
in the Middle East to use the
new Atreus system which will
offer a quantum leap in the field
of blood donation services. This
modernisation drive will be
accompanied by qualifying the
staff as well as strengthening
the vital role of the Blood Donor
Centre through the dissemination
of voluntary blood donation
culture,” al Nabet added.

transfusion medicine services at
the HMC, said that apart from
the new automation system in
blood component processing,
the centre will also adopt a new
methodology to test and inactivate
the organisms in blood that

Mirasol system. In fact, we will
be the first blood centre in the
world to combine these two
complementary technologies
later this year.”
During the occasion, al Nabet
also said the HMC’s Blood
Donor Unit has reached its target
of becoming a 100 per cent
volunteer-based system.
This achievement has enabled
Qatar to join the network of 62
countries worldwide which own
a blood transfer system, totally
dependent on blood donations.
Statistics for 2010 shows that
the total number of donors
reached 13,289, and about
17,321 units of blood were
collected.
Dr Siddiqa al Mahmoodi,
head of the HMC’s Blood Donor
Unit, said, “This year saw a significant
increase in the number
of blood donors and blood
units. It is the highest level
achieved since Qatar stopped
imports from abroad in 1987
and resorted to local voluntary
blood donors to secure ade-

quate reserve of high quality,
disease-free blood.”
About 360 voluntary blood
donors representing various
nationalities and organisations
were honoured during the event
in the presence of the Minister
of Health HE Abdullah bin
Khalid al Qahtani and HMC
Managing Director Dr Hanan al
Kuwari. Qatari blood donor
Thamer Hassan al Mohammadi,
along with several other donors,
were felicitated. Al Mohammadi
has been the most avid donor at
the centre in the country. He has
donated blood for 119 times.
In addition to enhancing the
blood donation and transfer
services, the need to attract
more blood donors was emphasised
during the event.
Merenkov said, “The HMC is
witnessing a greater demand for
blood donation due to the opening
of new hospitals such as the
Heart Hospital and Wakrah
Hospital in addition to the
expansion in cardiovascular
surgeries, liver transplantation
and stem cells transplantation.”
“The Blood Donation Centre
will need to increase the number
of donations. This will
involve more on-site and offsite
blood donor campaigns. We
will make it easier to donate
by having satellite blood collection
centres at convenient locations
for our donors. We will
have more staff, vehicles, transport
system and space,”
Merenkov said.
“We would also need a new
dedicated blood bank computer
system to document the processing
of the blood components
and provide the latest
world standard ISBT labelling
to minimise the risks of
transfusing blood wrongly,”
Merenkov added.
Australia, New Zealand seek
more cooperation with Qatar

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand are
eyeing to expand cooperation with
Qatar in a wide range of sectors
including security, agriculture and
education, the ambassadors of the
two countries to Qatar HE Doug
Trappett and HE Rodney Harris,
respectively, have said.
Addressing members of the two
communities at a reception hosted
by the Australian and New Zealand
Business in Qatar on Tuesday, the
Australian ambassador said the
relationship between Qatar and
Australia were getting stronger
with the two countries exploring
bilateral investment opportunities.
Australian envoy Trappett said,
“Qatar’s Hassad Foods, for example,
has purchased properties in
Australia to realise the goal of
achieving food security in the region.
Australia offers a transparent investment
mechanism, which can help
Qatar set up businesses in Australia
with less hurdles.”
Trappett, who is based in the
UAE, said that though Qatar is

WITH more people
embarking on international
travel, the health risks
associated with visiting
countries with less developed
health and hygiene
standards have become
more pressing, said Dr
Ravinder Mamtani, professor
of public health and
associate dean for global
and public health at Weill
Cornell Medical College in
Qatar (WCMC-Q).
Speaking at the monthly
‘Medicine and U’ lectures on
Wednesday, Dr Mamtani
said that statistics show that
between 22 and 64 percent
of travellers reported illnesses
as a result of visiting
a developing country.
He said, “There are growing
numbers of people travelling.
In the US alone,
there has been an increase
of 21 percent of Americans
travelling abroad over the
past 15 years. In order to
avoid illness some precautions
should be taken.”
Dr Mamtani identified
three groups of potential
health hazards facing travellers.
They are the exacerbation
of existing illness,
such as a respiratory disorder
which could become
aggravated by high altitudes;
illnesses associated
with travelling in cramped
conditions for long periods
of time such as deep vein
thrombosis, and thirdly new
illnesses and infections.
“There are some basic
steps travellers can take to
protect themselves from
this third category,” said Dr
Mamtani. “One of the most
common illnesses contracted
by those travelling to
poorer countries is diarrhoea
and there are some
fundamental steps that can
prevent this such as avoiding
eating or drinking in
places of questionable
quality. Drink only sterilised
water and don’t buy
food from street vendors.
Always ensure your food is
thoroughly cooked and
served hot and keep some
hand wipes on you.”

THE Supreme Council of
Health (SCH) will hold the
initial assessment phase in
developing the national
accreditation programme for
medical facilities by the end
of the month.
The SCH is working on the
programme alongside
Accreditation Canada, an
independent organisation
accredited by the
International Society for
Quality in Healthcare to
assess healthcare services
provided to patients based

advice on minimising

Malaria pills can be
obtained and mosquito
repellent creams bought to
take with you and treated
bed nets should always be
used.
Dr Mamtani also said
travellers should always
take steps to plan for safe
and healthy travel and
ensure their vaccinations
are up-to-date as a protection
against infections such
as Hepatitis A and B,
malaria and yellow fever.
“Also ensure you are adequately
covered for insurance
and to take a list of
qualified doctors with you
when you travel. Remember
to pack an emergency medical
kit containing essential
items such as antihistamine
cream and tablets,” he said.
Antibiotics, decongestants,
band-aids, and of
course, sun cream are some
of the essential items he
said travellers should take
along with them.
“If you develop any
symptoms after you return
home such as weight loss,
diarrhoea or fever, seek
medical care immediately,”
he added.
Dr Mamtani recommended
that those on long
haul flights should avoid
drinking alcohol and
remember to stay well
hydrated as the risk of deep
vein thrombosis (DVT)
increases three fold on
flights that are over six
hours long.
“Try a few light stretches
for at least five minutes and
if you are in a high risk category,
you should wear
compression stockings,” he
said.

composer’s piece draws heavily
from the folk music of his homeland
and is recognised for being joyful.

Saba, who will play Daniel
Schnyder’s Concerto for Ney. This is
the first concerto written for the
Ney, a woodwind instrument which
features Arabic music. An endblown
flute of cane, the Ney dates
back to more than 5,000 years. Ney
players are present in wall paintings
in the Egyptian pyramids and
instruments which have been
unearthed at Ur.
Lebanon’s Saba is a leading figure
of Arabic music. Saba studied the
Ney, Oud and violin at the Lebanon
National Conservatory. He is regarded
by the world as a true pioneer of
the Ney as well as Arabic interpretation
of the western flute. Saba has
toured extensively with Fairouz,
Marcel Khalife and Simon Shaheen
Korean maestro Nanse Gum.
