Billy Banks headed the Russell band at the Lafayette Theatre the week of 7/16-22/32 (see adv.) and toured with the band in
New York City and New England until late August-1932. Surely Banks had used members of the Russell band incl. Bill
Coleman for this session as he used members of the MBRB for the 5/10/32 and 4/28/32 sessions. Unfortunately, in contrast
to suggestions of some American musicians and Allen fans, Red Allen is not present.
1930 unknown date, Paramount´s Long Island Studios – The LUIS RUSSELL´s ORCH. took part in the film “THE DEVIL´S
HOLIDAY” starring Morton Downey(v) details unknown / wanted; a new source of Al Nicholas to Uwe Dürr (in his Al
Nicholas Disco) names this 1930 Paramount feature instead of the unknown 1932 feature. research assist wanted?
Mark Cantor had found a film-copy at the West-Coast in which the night-club-scene was cut; we look for an alternate copy at the US-East coast
../../1932 NYC., Paramount-studios - LUIS RUSSELL & HIS BAND: unknown Paramount feature (title & details unknown)
possibly Billy Banks or the Mills Brothers (v) sources: Greely Walton; and David Meeker: "JAZZ IN THE MOOVIES"
if it is not infact the 1930 Paramount feature “The Devil´s Holiday” then concerning my own experiences with jazz-film-research in the
negro-press I suggest for research about this NYC. studio feature to have an eye also on mentioned names like the Mills
Brothers or Billy Banks (both in several relations to the Russell-band in late 1931 until late 1932 with such show titles as
"JAZZ-MAD"; "RADIO LAND" ; "HOT-CHA-CHA" ; "LEONARD HARPER´s REVUE / CHORUS".
