Work to stabilize church walls beginning
S
caffolding is beginning to appear
inside Grace Church as we prepare
to strengthen the clerestory walls that became
unstable after the earthquake centered
in Virginia last August.
As soon as this phase of work is completed
and the inside of the church can be
safely reoccupied – an estimated five
months, if all goes according to plan – the
pews will be returned to the church so the
Grace family can come home to worship
in our historic building again.
Richard Kinard, head of Grace’s Building
Committee and of Mashburn Construction
Co., gave an overview of the
project at two “Parish Conversations” in
January. He says the focus of the current
work will be to strengthen the walls so
that the congregation can return to worship
inside the church as soon as possible
– hopefully by this summer.
The work will involve using hundreds
of rods and masonry anchors through the
Grace’s Vicar appointed at St. Mark’s
From the Rector
The Reverend Canon
J. Michael A. Wright
s I’m sure you are aware, Callie
A has been assisting our sister parish
of St. Mark’s during the month of January.
St. Mark’s has been without a rector
since late last summer. We are pleased to
announce that the Bishop of South Carolina
has appointed the Reverend Calhoun
Walpole as Priest-in-Charge of St. Mark’s
Episcopal Church, Charleston effective
February 1, 2012. This is a half-time appointment.
Callie continues to serve as
Construction Superintendent Steve Hatton and
Building Committee Chairman Richard Kinard
of Mashburn Construction look at floor protection
being installed in the church in January.
Vicar of Grace Church on a half-time basis.
Congratulations, Callie. Please be assured
of our prayers and continued support.
This is an exciting opportunity for all
of us, both at St. Mark’s and Grace
Church, as we share in mutual ministry
beyond our own walls and yet within our
own extended family. St. Mark’s is located
downtown at the corner of Warren
and Thomas streets, near Ashley Hall.
Needless to say, with our added financial
challenges at Grace this year, we aregrateful
to St Mark’s for their commitment
to share with us in the cost of
priestly ministry.
Lent: clearing out
in order to receive
From the Vicar
The Reverend
Calhoun Walpole Perkins
D avid Adam writes that “often the
new cannot enter our lives for we
are full of the old;” and that we “are unable
to give ourselves…because our
minds and our diaries are full.”
In an address to the women of the
Diocese of South Carolina in 1908,
Bishop William Alexander Guerry noted
that “if we take a backward glance today,
it is only that we may gain fresh courage
for the future, and a deeper consecration
to the great work to which God has
called us.”
The season of Lent is a season of emptying.
Our Lord calls us to labor in his
name, but it is often difficult to discern
our own individual calls to service when
our minds are filled with myriad preoccupations.
I wonder if, sometimes, we
might unconsciously permit our minds to
be so cluttered that we thus, inadvertently,
keep God’s particular call upon us
at bay.
May this season of Lent be a season of
fresh courage and deeper consecration
for each one of us.
Peace in Christ,
Mashburn Construction $551,908 to complete this phase. If the
new things in a safe environment. Here
they’re going to find that they’re loved and
that they can do things they never thought
they could do before. They’re going to leave
here and go back to their schools, their families
there. Camp Kanuga is a special place and I’m
honored to be a part of it.”
L
ittle School has been accepting applications
for the 2012-2013 school year. It
appears we will have some room for additional
students in the 5-year-old kindergarten
As a member of Grace Church, you have a wonderful
opportunity to send your child to a nurturing
pre-school that provides an academic foundation
strives to develop cognitive, physical, social/
emotional, and language skills in our 100 students.
Lessons from Sunday School
From the Director of
Children’s Ministries
Julie Walters
F or the past three-and-a-half years our Sunday
School classes have been working their way
through the Bible from the Old Testament to the Parables.
This spring we’ll wrap up our four-year rotation
with the books of the New Testament – following
Paul’s missionary journeys and studying his letters to
those he helped along the way.
What can we hope our children learn?
Perseverance. Paul is the ultimate example of someone
who never gave up despite numerous challenges.
He travelled to places that many thought were incapable
of change, spreading the Good News, and bringing people
closer to God.
Love for one another. Paul encourages kindness,
love and generosity throughout his letters. In Bible
times, kindness meant a special kind of love that showed
mercy and was always there. When we think about it like
this, this gift of the Spirit means “always loving and forgiving”.
This is how God feels about us and how we
should feel about others.
Trust in God. When we become Christians, the Holy
Spirit enters our hearts and helps us live a new life that
is pleasing to God. He knows our strengths and our
weaknesses and loves us anyway! Our trust in His love
will allow us to live the life we are meant to live.
Although these books don’t have the well-known stories
and characters of the Old Testament, they are important
tools to teach the values each of us aspire to as
Christians. We hope you’ll join us as we trace Paul’s
journey and embrace his teachings each week. Ask your
child(ren) to talk about what they’ve learned and how
they can use it in their lives. I think you’ll be surprised
by their responses.
Little School has openings in 5K class this fall
With classes for Toddlers through five-year-old
kindergarten, the school offers a half-day program
plus, a Lunch Bunch extended day program
and enrichment classes, including karate,
dance, drama, science, art, French and Spanish.
Classes are small and teachers are qualified
and loving.
Little School offers admission in February, with
priority given to Grace Church members after siblings.
If you are interested in the 2012-2013 school
year, please contact the school at 345-0907 to complete
On January 22, about 120 people enjoyed sampling
from 23 pots of chili prepared by parishioners for
the second annual Chili Cook-Off. Thanks to everyone
who contributed chili, cornbread, desserts and
more. The winners were Trey Mathisen, first place;
Lester and Clare Pittman, second place; and John
was a month’s reserved parking near the Atrium
One way to take responsibility for the church’s
future is by making a planned gift for her continued
DR Mission Team
forming for 2012
G
race will be sending a mission team again this
summer to the Dominican Republic, June 23-
year’s, in which 17 adults and youth went to San
Pedro de Macoris to work at Iglesia Buen Pastor
(Good Shepherd Church).
This year’s team of about 15-20 people will be completing
construction at one of the parish churches on
the island. The project will consist of light tasks like
painting, hammering, mixing cement, etc. No construction
skills are necessary! Final details of the work
will be decided in the next few months.
If you are interested in traveling with the mission
team this summer, please contact Jason Roberson at
jasonroberson2011@gmail.com or by phone at (843)
637-0636. Space on the team will fill up quickly, so
reserve your spot now!
If you can’t travel but would like to support the
2012 DR Mission Trip, please consider a taxdeductible
contribution towards the team’s expenses.
Checks may be made payable to Grace Church with
a group based on the
writings of Thomas Merton, is meeting
twice a month at Grace. If you have
heard of this group and would like to
join, now is the time. We welcome anyone
who wants to “turn down the
noise” of stressful living and go a little
deeper into the meaning of faith and
living a busy life.
Our group meets on the second and
fourth Tuesdays of each month
(February 14 and 28, this month) at
8:15 a.m. in the Dotterer Chapel. We
Savvy Seniors plan museum visit
O
n Tuesday, February 14, Grace’s group for seniors will
visit the Karpeles Manuscript Museum on Spring Street.
We’ll meet there at 11:00 a.m. to view the displays of manuscripts,
letters and other memorabilia. Permanent exhibits include
18th Dynasty Egyptian carvings as well
as local documents.
The traveling exhibit is a collection of notes
and correspondence between Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle and Houdini about spiritualism
and the occurrences in several séances. The
Reverend Paul Gilbert visited the exhibit recently
and reports it was more interesting
than he would have expected. The Executive
Director, Stephen White, will be on hand for
Karpeles Museum
a briefing on the background of the museum,
and will point out some interesting features. There is parking on
the side of St. James Methodist church, home of the museum,
which is located at Spring and Coming Street.
Following our visit, we’ll go for a festive lunch at Taco Boy on
Huger Street near East Bay Street, a good example of repurposing
an older building to a new and attractive use. Olé!
Youth to try being ‘secret servants’ this Lent
From the Director of
Youth & Young Adult Ministries
Rob Donehue
W ith Lent approaching, it may seem a bit of a
stretch to bring up the subject of Christmas.
For many people, Lent is associated with giving
something up or concentrating on an ascetical practice,
so the rather “Christmas-like” theme of extravagant
giving may seem out of place as we look ahead
to the forty days of Lent. Giving, however, can be an
appropriate Lenten practice. We can examine how
we use our time and resources and then make an effort
to change the ways we use them in order to give
to those in need. The Crisis Ministries Shelter, Habitat
for Humanity, HomeWorks of America, Lowcountry
Food Bank – these are just a few names of
organizations that can aways use our help. To be
sure, the theme of giving fits into Lent very well.
With this in mind, EYC will be entering Lent with
an Incarnational attitude. The idea is to have a
“secret servant” for each youth interested in participating.
Each youth will be given the name of another
youth at the church, and throughout the 40 days of
Lent, we will try to find ways of engaging in service
for the youth whose name we have drawn. It can be
as simple as praying regularly for someone, or sending
encouraging notes. It can be as elaborate as
spending a Saturday working with Habitat for Humanity
on behalf of someone else. It can be whatever
service one chooses, but the overall theme of
our practices during Lent will be serving and giving.
Upcoming youth events
Spring retreat: Grace EYC is planning a Spring retreat April 13-15 at Camp
Gravatt in Aiken. The cost of the trip will be $60 per person, which includes
meals and a ropes course. If you are interested, please let Rob know as
soon as possible: rdonehue@gracesc.org or 723-4575. We need to get our
spot booked by mid-February.
Friday, February 17: Grace youth will be heading out to Hollywood for a
special gathering with our friends from Second Presbyterian. We’ll leave
from church around 5:00 p.m. and be there until around 9:00. There’s a
HUGE field at the house where we’ll be meeting, so it might be time for a
game of capture the flag! Please RSVP to Rob if you’d like to come so we
can arrange rides.
Saturday, February 18: It’s time for our annual Flour War! Meet at Second
Presbyterian Church (342 Meeting St.) at 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
Be sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty/covered in flour.
And if last year’s gathering was any indicator, there might be water balloons
involved as well, so the flour could easily become dough…Hope you
can join us!
February 2012
Everyone will also be asked to keep a running list of
things they have done in their role as “secret servant.”
This will all culminate at Easter, when we will
exchange one last gift, finally discover who each
other’s “secret servant” has been all along, and hear
about what has been done for us by our “secret servant.”
The purpose behind having a Lenten practice focused
on giving and service is to remind us that God
has given us the gift of being with us, of teaching us
the way of life, sharing in our sufferings, dying for
us, and rising again for us so that we might be made
like him when he returns. All this is a gift bestowed
on us by the God whose love knows no bounds!
And since Lent can be a time for more intentional
actions in response to the love God has for us, the
hope is that we will use the 40 days of Lent to increase
our understanding of what it means to live in
service to others, as Christ does for us.
Any youth wishing to participate in this Lenten
exercise should contact Rob (rdonehue@gracesc.org).
It would be great to have a full list before Ash
Wednesday so that we can begin the project as soon
as Lent begins. We will have a list of suggested activities
for youth to do, but it by no means limits one
in terms of scope of service; creative ideas are always
welcome!
“Heavenly Father, you have taught us by the example
of your divine Son to give abundantly of ourselves
and love one another without self seeking.
Grant that we may both serve and be served in the
same spirit of charity with which our Lord Jesus
came to dwell among us. Amen.”
Grace will have team shirts for the annual youth
Flour War on February 18. (Think this color will
show the flour much?)

Coffee hours available after 9:00 & 11:15 services
Hosts needed to help provide hospitality at Grace and St. Mary’s
S
tarting February 12, Grace will again
offer two coffee hours every Sunday:
after the 9:00 a.m. service at Grace,
and after the 11:15 a.m. service at St.
Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. With our
parish family worshipping in multiple locations,
it’s more important than ever to
provide opportunities for us to visit together.
Coffee hours are also a way to
welcome our many visitors and include
them in the life of our parish.
After the 9:00 a.m. service
There is always a coffee hour after the
9:00 a.m. Family Eucharist. Usually it’s set
up on the front lawn, but if the weather is
uncooperative, our staff and volunteers
will need a few minutes to get it set up in
Hanahan Hall. Please stay and enjoy! You
can also get your refreshments to-go, and
enjoy one of our three ongoing Adult
Christian Education classes upstairs from
10:10-10:50 a.m.
After the 11:15 a.m. service
Starting February 12, refreshments will
be served in the parish hall at St. Mary’s,
the building to the right as you exit the
church. Also, please look for the Grace
Information Table for sign-up forms and
other material you’d normally find at
Grace on Sunday mornings.
More hosts needed!
If you enjoy having something to
munch on with your coffee or lemonade
after church, would you consider being
part of this ministry of hospitality by taking
a turn bringing food for your coffee
hour? The schedule on the right lists the
parishioners who already have signed up
as coffee hosts for the next few months.
(More dates are available later in 2012.)
The stars indicate dates when additional
hosts are needed. Hosts are asked to bring
three or four trays of something tasty to
church on their assigned Sunday. The
church has plates, trays and bowls available
in the kitchen for you to use if you
need them. To sign up for a Sunday,
please contact Nancy at nezellsuggs@gracesc.org
or 723-4575.
Words of Grace
Grace’s ‘Christmas at Sea’ gifts go a long way
A
s a result of the generosity from Grace and
other area churches and organizations, the
Charleston Port and Seafarers’ Society’s 2011
“Christmas at Sea Program” distributed more than
1,600 gifts to seafarers visiting our port city from India,
the Philippines, Germany, Sweden, Montenegro,
Italy, Madagascar, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Indonesia,
Croatia, China, America, Malaysia, Sri Lanka,
England, Kiribati, Russia and more.
The following is just one story of how Grace’s
partnership with ChaPSS makes a difference:
I boarded a ship whose crew was primarily from
Myanmar (formerly Burma). Sensing the crew probably
would have been Buddhist, I asked if any of the
crew were Christians. When told that two members
were, I asked if I could visit with them. We were able
to visit in the ships office and I told them that the
Seafarers Ministry had gifts for the whole crew and I
was depending upon them to explain the meaning of
Christmas and gift-giving.
The two Christian men were more than willing to
take on the task and were very appreciative of the
gifts. Then, one of the crewmen proceeded to ask
me if I had a large print Bible in Burmese. I told him
I did not, but would have one for him when he came
back on a return trip. He said, however, they would
not come back to Charleston. He explained that he
was having trouble seeing, and he hoped he would
have a Bible to read since he could not read English
very well. I noticed his eyes appeared to be very red
and thought that he had some issues with his vision
and perhaps may not have access to eye care in his
country. When I suggested I pray for them, I heard
their knees hit the floor. It was obvious that they
Bill Dutour, Master of the Maersk Wyoming, sent this photo
to ChaPSS of crew members wearing warm knitted caps that
the seafarers ministry gave them when the ship visited
Charleston in December before heading to Dubai via the
Suez Canal.
were holding onto their faith. After I told the man in
need of the Bible I would be back in an hour and
could hopefully help him, I went to a local pharmacy
and purchased reading glasses for magnifying print.
When I returned to the ship, I gave him the glasses
and asked if they made a difference. The big smile
that came over his face told me he could see to read
his Bible. He wanted to know how much the glasses
cost and I told him they were free... “A gift from
God”.
You never know how God can use gifts to convey
his love during Christmas. Thank you for the manner
you chose to express Christ’s love.
February 2012
Special services and offerings mark Lent season
L
ent begins this month, with Ash Wednesday
on February 22. For the first five Sundays of
Lent, we’ll see some changes in our Sunday liturgies.
At 8:00 a.m. we will celebrate Holy Eucharist according
to Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer.
At 11:15 a.m. we’ll be taking note of the 350th anniversary
of the 1662 Prayer Book of the Church of
England, and our Choral Eucharist will be based on
that liturgy.
Ash Wednesday at St. Matthew’s
B
ecause our church building is still closed for
repairs, our evening service on Ash Wednesday
will be held at 6:00 p.m. St. Matthew’s Lutheran
Church. (There will not be a 5:30 p.m. service at
Grace on February 22.) This will be an Episcopal
Ash Wednesday liturgy, held as a joint service with
our neighbors at St. Matthews, and our choirs will
combine for the Choral Eucharist.
Ash Wednesday services with Holy Eucharist and
the imposition of ashes also will be held in Hanahan
Hall at Grace at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Holy Week and Easter plans
Grace continues to be blessed with generous offers
of help from our neighboring faith communities
Holly Herrick to speak Feb. 16
F ood writer Holly Herrick will be the guest
speaker for February’s “Third Thursday Lunch”
sponsored by the Men of Grace on February 16 at
12:30 p.m. in Hanahan Hall. This fun luncheon
speaker series is open to everyone (not just men!), so
please join us!
Holly will be talking about her latest cookbook, The
Food Lover’s Guide to Charleston and Savannah, which features
Grace’s Tea Room. She’ll be signing copies,
which will be available for $14.95, with a portion of
the proceeds going to Grace’s building needs.
Please reserve your spot for the lunch early, as seating
is limited. Contact Bunny Martin at 723-4575 or
nominal charge for the meal.
February 2012
Adult classes offered
at Grace on Sundays
I f you worship at St. Mary’s on Sundays at
11:15, you may wonder if Grace is still offering
Sunday School for adults. The answer is “Yes!”
Grace’s Adult Education offerings are still going on
at 10:10 a.m. You can park at Grace, take part in
one of our three ongoing classes, and then take the
short walk to St. Mary’s – classes are dismissed by
10:50 so there’s plenty of time to get to church, and
a shuttle van is available if walking is difficult.
Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome at
these classes:
Parent2Parent: The Reverend Paul Gilbert leads
our weekly parent discussion group in the Meadowcroft
Room. Currently, the group is looking at a
book by Tom Sturges, Grow the Tree You Got. It’s
aimed at guiding parents through the adolescent
and teenage years, but has much to consider for
parents in other stages, too.
Adult Bible Study: “In Word and Image” is the
current topic for our weekly Bible discussion with
Andy Shook. The focus is on religious art – icons
and paintings – and the texts in which the pictorial
message is rooted. We begin with the history and
tradition of Christian imagery and move into examining
some specific pictures and the Biblical passages
underlying the art. Please join us as we explore
together the word as image and the image as
word.
Faith Matters: “Familiar Words” is the title of
the latest series in this ongoing class led by Lester
Pittman, Grace Church’s Catechist. The class is reflecting
on some of the most memorable passages
in the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. We
begin with the Lord’s Prayer, followed by the Name
of God, the Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments,
and the 23rd Psalm. Join us to find new
meaning in these and other familiar words that God
has used to speak to us and that we use in our
prayer and worship to God.
Bible study meets Thursdays
“The Bible 4 Today,” a weekly study group led by
the Rector, meets on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. in the
Dotterer Chapel. This group looks at the Revised
Common Lectionary readings appointed for the
upcoming Sunday, and occasionally takes field trips,
including a recent tour of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic
Church. Newcomers are welcome!

February 2012 16
Words of Grace
Men of Grace: All are invited
to ‘Third Thursday’ Feb. 16
S
uper Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and the beginning of
Lent...that’s what February is made of! Beyond those three
signature events, this month also welcomes our second installment
of “Third Thursday.” Last month, we kicked off this
speaker series, hearing from Jimmy Bailey about the YEScarolina
Program he co-founded, which has helped train more than
10,000 youth in our state on entrepreneurship and how to write
a business plan. He was welcomed by an enthusiastic group who
dined upon pork barbecue, rice, green beans and slaw as prepared
by our own resident chef, Reece Williams.
This month – February 16 at 12:30 p.m. – we welcome writer
Holly Herrick, a former food critic with The Post and Courier and
author of several cookbooks. Holly will be talking about her latest
book The Food Lover’s Guide to Charleston and Savannah which
features Grace. She will be speaking about the differences and
similarities between these two grand cities, their food and social
scenes, as well as how she researched and came to write it.
She’ll gladly sign copies of the book, which is available to purchase
from the Gifts of Grace shop on Sundays and Wednesdays,
or on the day of the luncheon. A portion of the sales go to
Grace’s building campaign!
So if you are in the doghouse over who won the Super Bowl
or if that Valentine’s present was not just right, well here is a
chance at redemption! Make your reservations early for the
luncheon on February 16, as seated is limited. Contact Bunny at
the Church Office, 723-4575 or bmartin@gracesc.org. There’s a
nominal charge for lunch, and guests are welcomed. (The lunch
is open to everyone, not just men!)
As you may have gleaned from the diversity of these first two
speakers, the Men of Grace and “Third Thursday” want to bring
in a variety of speakers on a wide range of subjects with the goal
of providing something for everyone within the congregation. If
you know of someone you would like to hear, please contact
either Bunny or me (709-1822) and we will gladly work on getting
them scheduled.
Finally, a little reflection as we head into Lent. All my life I
have given something up during this time as a reminder of the
sacrifice our Lord made during His 40 days wandering in the
desert. I even wrote about foregoing chocolate last year for
Lent. Well, this year I decided to go in a different direction. I
decided to take something on…in this case the startup of “Third
Thursday.” I believe this time of sacrifice and introspection presents
a magnificent opportunity to further serve our fellow man.
After all, didn’t Jesus show us through His own life examples of
healing the sick, feeding the hungry, helping the poor, that perhaps
servitude to our fellow man would be one way to honor
Him? So, honor Him however you choose….but be sure to
honor Him!
are behind schedule on this project. But we hope to get it completed
soon, with a little help! If you are interested in assisting in
this manner, please contact the church office at 723-4575 or
email Nancy at nezellsuggs@gracesc.org.
