The movies turn over quick quickly and few cities stage more film festivals than Bangkok does. The city regularly hosts a number of plays, operas, musicals and ballet performances and if you are a historical buff the National Museum, the Vimanmek Teak Museum, the Royal Barges Museum and the Grand Palace will keep you busy. Jim Thompson’s House is also usually a must visit for anyone travelling to Bangkok. The man who brought Thai silk to the world disappeared without a trace in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia back in 1967. And if you are into snakes, then you should visit the Snake Farm at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, where you can watch daily milkings and feedings of the reptiles. Bangkok is truly a shopper’s cornucopia: starting at the Emporium on Sukhumvit Road, then moving west you’ll find Central Chitlom, Gaysorn and Amarin Plazas, Central World Plaza, Siam Paragon (featuring an IMAX theatre and Siam Ocean World), and the Siam Discovery Centre - all within short Skytrain distance of one another. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better selection of high-class shopping malls in any other city in Southeast Asia. Only In Bangkok Bangkok has three spectacular rooftop restaurants: Vertigo, the stunning open-air al fresco bar, 61 floors up in the Banyan Tree Hotel on Sathorn Road is a great place to dine, but be careful when the wind kicks up. Sirocco, 65 floors up, at the top of the State Tower at the bottom of Silom Road is another spectacular openair spot to take a loved one for a romantic evening. And Red Sky, sitting 56 floors up on the Centara Grand, has succulent cuisine and its open-air happy hour is a great way to see the city. Local Knowledge: Public Transport – There is a BTS Skytrain and MRT Underground rail systems that provide easy accessibility to shopping, entertainment and business areas. There are express boats and river taxis that can be used to see cultural and riverside attractions. Taxis, buses, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), tuk tuks, and motorcycle taxis are other alternatives. The new Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link connects the airport to central Bangkok. The coolest and driest months to visit are November to February. April is hot and dry with the rains beginning in May and continuing until October. Getting There Almost all major airlines fly into Suvanabhumi, Bangkok’s international airport. Don Muang, the old international airport, situated across town still services some domestic flights. And a rapid transit link has just opened up making getting back and forth from Suvanabhumi into the city that much easier. Thailand’s train system, originating out of the Bangkok terminus, Hualampong, covers almost of the whole country except for the area around Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi and Ranong, where no track was ever laid. Bangkok has three major train stations: Ekamai (covering Pattaya, the Eastern Seaboard, and some spots in the east) Sai Dai (covering al points west & south) and Mochit (covering all points north & northeast).
