The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to introduce 

“Thailand Hotel Standards”. This is an exciting development for the 

tourism industry in Thailand for tourists visiting the Kingdom. This new 

programme aims to provide a consistent, dependable star rating of 

one to five for hotels and resorts throughout the country. 

Because Thailand is not only a premier tourist destination, but also a 

year-round one, tourism is a major key to the Kingdom’s economy 

and to many people’s holiday enjoyment. Being assured of obtaining 

the type of accommodation the holiday-maker is seeking and that 

guests know what a hotel offers is a win-win situation for the hoteliers 

and tourists alike. 

Thailand has various types of accommodation to suit everyone from 

back-packers, business travellers, to those for whom only the most 

luxurious settings will suffice. Whether visiting a golden temple or 

white sandy beaches, the new star rating ensures that there is no 

question regarding the quality or standard of service.

Thailand Hotel Standard Foundation 

Thailand Hotel Standard Foundation plays a unique role in the promotion 

and development of the country’s tourism industry. Since its establishment, 

the objective is to raise the standard of the overall hotel business with 

the aim to ensure uniform standardization used in Thailand is consistent 

nationwide and aligned with international standards. In this context, the 

hotel standard in Thailand has so far exceeded quality standards in view of 

the fact that many hotels offer style, elegance and distinctive service and 

design which have captured the attention of both Thai and foreign visitors. 

When it comes to authentic Thai style hospitality, the hotels offer visitors 

prestigious luxuries to choose from. There is a wide choice of hotel

The History of Thailand Hotel Standard 

Developing a system of hotel standards in Thailand began as a desire of the 

Thailand Hotel Association (THA) and as a desire of the Tourism Authority of 

Thailand (TAT). In 1999, Mr. Chanin Donavanik of the THA and Mr. Pradech 

Phayakvichien of TAT initiated the project of developing a “World Class 

Standard” for Thailand’s tourism industry. The goal was to establish and 

meet these standards by the year 2012. 

THA thus began a pilot project to standardize 

a rating system for hotels in Thailand. 

Subsequently the THA asked for the assistance 

of ATTA (Association of Thai Travel Agents), and 

developing a Thailand Hotel Standard became a 

joint project of THA, TAT and ATTA. The initial 

task force assigned to draft the Thailand Hotel 

Standard was established with personnel of the 

above-mentioned organizations plus personnel 

from large and small hotels throughout the 

Kingdom, with the actual drafting of the 

“Thailand Hotel Standard” being given to Mrs. 

Piyaman Kanathanavanich 

Two laws that impacted the work of this pilot 

project were passed in 2002. These were the 

Public Administration Acts 2002 (5th issue) and 

the Ministries and Departments Reform Act 

2002. One result of these laws was the official 

establishment of the Ministry of Tourism and 

Sports. Two further impacts on the Thailand 

Hotel Standards Project were the two following 

Royal Decrees: The Royal Decree of Official 

Transference of the Administration, Authority 

and Function of Governmental Organizations 

in Accordance with “The Reform Acts of 

Ministries and Departments” 2002 and The 

Royal Decree of Reform Acts concurring 

with the transference of official authority of 

all government organizations. These laws and 

decrees resulted in Hotel Standards becoming 

the top priority of the Office of Tourism 

Development. Prior to this, the Hotel Act 

of BE 2478 (1935) provided the legislative 

framework and regulatory provisions under 

which hotels in the Kingdom operated. 

The information-gathering phase of the 

project was carried out in 2002 and 2003. 

Sixty hotels were surveyed. Information 

was solicited concerning the standard of 

construction and facilities, the standard of 

maintenance and the standard of services. “The 

Foundation of Standard and Human Resources 

Development in Service and Tourism Industry” 

was established to oversee the administration 

and certification process. This is a non-profit 

organization representing both the public 

and private sectors. The first major step in 

the Thailand Hotel Standards project was 

accomplished in March 2004 when 84 hotels 

throughout Thailand voluntarily participated 

in the Kingdom’s first ever hotel standard 

certification program. Each of these 84 hotels 

was given a star rating of one to five, with five 

being the highest available rating. There were 

116 participating hotels and resorts in the star 

rating program as of September 2005. 



The work of the initial project is complete. 

Official standards have been established, 

including a point system for each area of 

concern for each of the five ratings, but the 

work of the foundation continues as more 

hotels apply for certification and previously 

certified hotels are recertified or apply for an 

additional star. Currently there are 16 five-star 

hotels, 18 four-star hotels, and 14 three-star 

hotels in Bangkok. In Chiang Mai there is one 

five-star hotel, 5 four-star hotels, and 4 threestar 

hotels. There are five-star hotels in Chiang 

Rai, Phuket, Pattaya, Prachuab Khiri Khan, and 

Surat Thani, and four-star hotels in Ayutthaya, 

Chiang Rai, Pattaya, Krabi, Loei, Phetchaburi, 

Phuket, Surat Thani, Khon Kaen, Pattani and 

Songkhla. 

As more hotels choose to take advantage of 

the Hotel Standard System, the hotels and their 

customers alike will benefit from the work 

of the foundation. The above-mentioned goal 

of achieving a Kingdom-wide system of hotel 

ratings by 2012 seems very achievable.



Thai Hotel Standard Foundation 

World tourists are familiar with star rating systems for hotels, restaurants and 

frequented tourist sites. As tourism is a major sector of the Thai economy and as the 

hotel business is one of the most important sectors of the tourism industry, setting a 

consistent standard for hotels and resorts has long been a concern of the Thai tourism 

industry. The first step in this direction was taken in March 2004, when 84 hotels 

voluntarily participated in the country’s first ever hotel certification program. 

The Thailand Hotel Standard is a nonprofit 

foundation and a joint endeavor of private and 

public sectors. The organization’s full, official name is: 

The Foundation of Standard and Human Resource 

Development in Service and Tourism Industry. The 

Hotel Standard Certifying Committee is comprised 

of ten persons: the Director-General of the Office 

of Tourism Development, the Governor of Tourism 

Authority of Thailand, a representative (president 

or vice president) of ATTA (Association of Thai 

Travel Agents), a representative of the associations 

of domestic tourism, one public university member 

and one private university member from Faculty of 

Tourism (hotel curriculum), the President of THA 

(Tourism Authority of Thailand), the Secretary 

General of THA, the Chairman of Membership of 

THA, and the Vice President of THA. 

Recognizing that Thailand’s competitive potential 

in international tourism could be enhanced by 

establishing a “precise, accurate and reliable” 

hotel standard, it was decided that adopting 

an internationally recognized practice of hotel 

standards and certification was an important 

step. European models provided the conceptual 

framework for the current Thai Hotel Standard and 

are based on the “star rating” concept that already is 

familiar to international travelers. 

The guidelines for creating the Thai Hotel Standard 

included several key policies: a clear and accurate 

classification standard, transparent and verifiable 

criteria, re-evaluation must result in a consistent 

standard, the standard is protection for both the 

hotel and its customers, and cer tification of standard 

is open to all hotels with or without membership 

in THA. 

As with any industry, competition makes for 

improvement. By establishing a rating system, 

hotels wishing to be given an additional star in 

their rating must compete and raise standards 

to achieve this goal. The result is better services 

for tourists and a clear understanding of the 

services and characteristics of competitor hotels. 

This healthy competition encourages not only a 

higher quality of service, but also a higher quality of 

management. 

In order to receive a star rating of from one to five 

stars, with five being the highest standard, hotels 

are given points for three aspects – standard of 

construction and facilities, standard of maintenance 

and standard of ser vices. Any hotel must achieve 

above the minimum 



number of points in all three categories for any 

specific star rating. As more hotel owners and 

operators become aware of the benefits of a star 

rating by the Thailand Hotel Standard, participation 

will increase, thus the overall standards will improve 

what is already an excellent service industry. 

To ensure that both local and international travelers 

are aware of the Thailand Hotel Standard program, a 

guide to the participating hotels has been produced 

and is being distributed worldwide. A hotel’s 

certification is displayed either at the entrance in the 

lobby in the form of a certificate or plaque. Certified 

hotels are being promoted by the TAT and the travel 

industry. 

Confidence in Thailand as a world-class tourist 

destination and endeavoring to make Thailand the 

“Tourism Capital of Asia” are worthy goals. To that 

end the Thai Hotel Standard is pursuing the goal of 

complete certification throughout the industry by 

the end of 2012. Amazing Thailand has just become 

more amazing.



Thailand Hotel Standard 

Goals and Objectives 

The Thai Hotel Standard committee is 

entrusted with the task of developing a 

model for star rating certification of hotels in 

Thailand. While based on the internationally 

accepted European model of star ratings, the 

ultimate goal is to ensure Thailand’s place on 

the world stage of international tourism and 

at the forefront of Asian tourism. In an effort 

to raise overall hotel standards throughout 

the Kingdom, the Thai Hotel Standard has 

adopted several official objectives and goals. 

The six major objectives of Thailand Hotel Standard are: 

To establish a tangible and reliable hotel standard. Many 

tourists have said to themselves, “It’s a three-star hotel, 

how bad can it be?” only to discover that three-star can 

mean anything in certain places. Thailand wishes its tourists 

to have a clear understanding and no disappointments with 

the standard of hotel they are reserving. 

To promote superior service, efficient administration and 

efficient and effective utilization of natural resources. The 

world can no longer use resources without consideration 

for the sustainability of those resources or for the 

consequences to the environment. Luxury does not have 

to be denied, but eco-friendly tourism is also required. 

To develop a set of standards that accurately reflects the 

physical characteristics of a property and offers a clear 

indicator if its “marketing value”. Tourists and hoteliers alike 

have the right to know they are being fairly treated and 

that marketing is accurate and beneficial. 

To encourage fair practice and equally protect consumers 

as well as hotels. This is a further safeguard throughout the 

tourism industry. 

To raise awareness of the ongoing development of the 

Thailand Hotel Standard. Travel agents worldwide need to 

be aware that there is a reliable and accurate star rating 

system in place. 

To build a firm foundation and promote the sustainable 

growth of the Thai hotel industry. Improving this sector of 

the tourism industry is vital to economic growth. 

The Thailand Hotel Standard also has five major goals. 

1.) Align local standards to international standards to raise 

hotel standards in Thailand overall. 

2.) Promote competition within the Thai hotel industry 

while creating a higher standard of service and 

management. 

3.) Encourage hotel participation in the program 

throughout Thailand. 

4.) Inspire international acceptance and confidence in 

Thailand’s hotels. 

5.) Raise awareness both nationally and internationally of 

Thailand’s certification of hotels, star ratings. 

Building standards throughout the tourism industry, builds 

Thailand. Hotels are the “stars” of the industry. 





Hotel Ratings’ Benefits to the Industry 

Whenever any new system is implemented, questions arise as to why it is necessary 

and what are the benefits. This is a normal part of human nature and a necessary one. 

Questions require answers that require thoughtful consideration. The Thailand Hotel 

Standard, being recently introduced, may cause hoteliers, the hospitality industry in 

general and tourists to ask, “Why is this important to me?” There are several benefits 

to this star rating system, for the certified hotels, for the hotel / hospitality industry in 

general and for the tourist. 

Hoteliers can benefit tremendously from the 

Thailand Hotel Standard. Independent hotels, 

in particular, but large name brand luxury 

hotels also benefit from a standard definition 

of “quality service”. The hotel industry is highly 

competitive. The star system is a clear indication 

of the services a hotel offers and what services 

are required for an additional star rating. It also 

is of comparison value with other hotels. By 

striving for excellence and a higher standard 

of certification, the value of products and 

services can only increase. This is a win-win 

situation for all. Efficiency in management and 

administration not only increases the quality 

of the product, but also reduces investment, 

leading to more efficiency. Because the hotel 

standard system is designed to be fair and 



transparent, hoteliers can better understand 

the current market, develop the physical 

characteristics of the property and meet 

customers’ needs. Possibly of greatest value to 

certified hoteliers is the opportunity for public 

relations and advertisement through Thailand 

Hotel Standard. 

For the hotel industry in general there are 

additional benefits. Information based partially 

on staff efficiently aids in developing internal 

and external education programs for hotel 

personnel. By stressing efficient use of human 

and natural resources, the goal of sustainable 

growth can be met. Hotels do not want 

disgruntled customers and customers do not 

want substandard accommodations. The star 

rating system ensures both the hotel and the 

guests know what is being offered and what 

is being paid for. Thailand’s reputation as an 

international travel destination partially depends 

on developing a standard of hygiene, safety and 

service. Standardization eliminates the variables, 

making tourism more viable. This also applies 

to having standards to which a tourist can refer 

and that are accepted as true and accurate. 

Most importantly, because Thailand Hotel 

Standard disseminates information worldwide, 

the entire industry benefits from positive 

publicity due to higher, consistent standards. 

Tourists benefit anytime standards are set and 

met. Tourists will continue to choose Thailand 

as a destination when their expectations are 

guaranteed.



Hotel Ratings’ Benefits to Consumer 

When booking a hotel, most tourists, business travelers and holidaymakers have a certain standard that they require 

and can afford. Knowing whether one is actually going to receive the required standard at a previously unvisited hotel 

can be tricky. Star ratings, a relatively new officially applied policy of the Thailand Hotel Standard Foundation, aim to 

ensure that customers benefit from a consistent definition of standards. 

What are the benefits to the customer? Because 

the Thailand Hotel Standard Foundation will be 

the only organization bestowing ratings, in Thailand 

the standard for every three-star hotel will be 

the same. Unlike Europe or the United States of 

America, where regional organizations rather than 

national organizations sometimes make a rating 

determination, Thailand will offer a consistent 

standard. The greatest benefit to the customer is 

knowing exactly what is being paid for and being 

able to choose the type of accommodation that 

best suits. 

What can one expect from each level? 

A one-star hotel is strictly economy. This does not 

mean substandard, ill kept or dirty. It simply means 

the basics – a clean comfortable bed with a shower 

and toilet – are all that are provided. Breakfast is not 

included; there is no weight room or even an on site 

eatery. A reasonable restaurant is generally within 

walking distance. Usually the hotel will be managed 

and operated by the owner, so service could be 

more personalized. 

A two-star rating obviously will provide a higher 

standard, but still limited amenities. Often part of 

a chain of hotels, the rooms will be small or midsized 

and will provide a television and telephone. A 

serviceable restaurant will be located on sight, but 

most likely will not offer 24/7 service. 

Three-star hotels are moderately priced, comfortable 

and adequate. They will not offer the luxury of a four 

or five-star hotel, but this is the range that those 

looking for room service, in room movies, a fitness 

center, a swimming or internet connections should 

explore. These hotels will be located in business and 

shopping areas of a city and will have a restaurant 

serving all three meals. 

If luxury is important, four-star hotels will provide 

top-notch service. Not personalized, like the ownermanaged 

hotels, nevertheless, all needs should be 

met with above average service. Usually located 

in dining, shopping and entertainment areas, these 

hotels are more formal and usually much larger with 

similar level hotels nearby. Rooms will be attractively 

furnished and one can expect valet service, room 

service, a choice of restaurants, fitness center, 

swimming pool and in room amenities and toiletries. 

If only the best of the best will suit, a true 

five-star luxury hotel awaits. These are generally the 

highest end chains or boutique hotels that come 

with a premium payment. Style, elegance and a high 

degree of personal service characterize these hotels. 

A choice of gourmet 

dining venues, a VCR, CD stereo, 24/7 room service, 

along with all the features of a four-star hotel will 

be on offer. 



For the tourist who probably has looked at 

websites and travel guides that assign their own 

ratings to hotels, being able to check those 

ratings against a definitive standard in Thailand’s 

hotels is a tremendous benefit. No longer is 

the tourist at the mercy of guessing what it means 

when a website says three stars while a travel guide 

says two stars for the same establishment. The 

Thailand Hotel Standards Foundation is endeavoring 

to offer each and every customer the assurance of 

knowing exactly what a three-star hotel will offer. It 

further assures that the standard will be maintained 

for the customer’s next visit due to its recertification 

policy.



Thailand Standard Levels 

Everyone knows that a five-star hotel has a higher level of service and 

accommodations than a three-star hotel. But what exactly does that mean? 

In Thailand, the Thailand Hotel Standard has adopted the internationally 

recognized 1 through five star system for hotels and resorts. They are in 

ascending order of excellence from one at the lowest and five at the highest. 

The star system defines the qualities and 

characteristics of the hotel. The three broad 

areas that are defined by the star system are: the 

standard of construction and facilities, the standard 

of maintenance, and the standard of services. 

Further considerations include the location and 

surroundings, as every restaurateur and hotelier 

will acclaim the three keys to success are location, 

location, and location. The physical structure and 

security system are important. Guests must both be 

comfortable and feel they and their possessions are 

secure. Handicapped friendly access is increasingly 

important in the global society. Hotels have guests 

that rent rooms and guests that use other facilities 

and services such as restaurants, bars and business 

centers. The variety, esthetics and quality of all of 

these services are factors in determining a star rating. 

One of the first questions many potential hotel 

guests ask concerning a hotel is, “How clean is it?” 

Standards of hygiene along with helpfulness and 

friendliness of staff greatly enhance the standard of 

a hotel. It is not enough to build good facilities; the 

facilities must be maintained. An ongoing system 

designed to maintain standards is essential. 

Generally speaking, a one-star hotel is for the 

budget traveler. It is expected to be clean, 

basic accommodation, with no frills. Two-star 

establishments are best described as limited 

service hotels. Accommodations are basic and 

clean while some business services may be 

offered. The rooms usually include private 

bath, telephone and TV. Three-star hotels 

tend to emphasize style, comfort and service. 



The tourist may expect to find on-site dining, 

a swimming pool, conference rooms and 

business services. Some will have fitness centers 

and gift shops. If paying for four-star accommodation, 

the tourist can expect a fine-dining restaurant, 

bar/lounge, up-to-date technology services, 

full amenities and detail to style and comfort. 

Obviously, five-star hotels offer the finest 

luxury appointments. Superlative service and 

style are a must. Architecture and design are 

of the greatest importance as is the finest in 

furnishings and abundance of space. Expect tennis 

courts, pools, fine-dining options and more. 

Tourists should keep in mind that one-star does not 

mean inadequate. It means basic. Five-star definitely 

means luxury.



Major Factors Determining 

Hotel Standards 

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and one person’s esthetic perfection might be 

another person’s esthetic nightmare. So how and what is considered when determining a 

hotel’s star rating? What questions are asked and who does the asking? There are major 

factors to consider for each hotel and resort. 

Onsite inspections are conducted by both a 

central and regional unit from the Thailand 

Hotel Standard. Each inspection is conducted 

by no less than 4 persons representing a 

minimum of three organizations. The criteria for 

standards have been approved by the Thailand 

Hotel Standard Task Force. 

The inspecting units will first consider then 

general physical aspects of the property. Is this 

a site that is easy to find and requires a minimum 

of travel time from a point of entry, i.e. airport, train 

station, etc.? Are the surroundings conducive to a 

pleasant stay? Factors such as noise and air pollution 

must be considered as does standing/ stagnant 

water, grounds and access to public transport. 

Construction of the physical structure must be 

taken into account. Can unauthorized individuals 

gain access to rooms without passing through 

a public space? Are elevators secure? Are there 

adequate safety facilities such as fire alarms, fire 

exits, sprinkler systems and guards? Facilities and 

service are what hotels and resorts are all about. 

Will a dining experience be comfortable and 

esthetically pleasing as well as offering great food? 

Are accommodations made for special diets? Do 

the rooms feature amenities and pleasant/ stylish 

décor or are they merely functional? What other 

services are provided? Valet parking? Fitness center? 

Concierge service? Swimming pool? Are the child 

facilities friendly? Are there baby-sitting services? 

What technology services are supplied? Wi-fi? Free 

Internet? Is there a choice of dining venues? Is there 

a bar/ lounge? 

Often the first impression a tourist has of a hotel 

or resort is the doorman. Is the staff courteous, 

helpful and friendly? Does the staff speak a variety of 

languages to accommodate international travelers? 

Are tourists to Thailand truly experiencing “The 

Land of Smiles”? Cleanliness and hygiene cannot be 

over emphasized. 

It is not enough to achieve a star rating, it must 

also be maintained. Continued staff training and 

evaluation along with efficiency in management and 

resources are a priority. One of the major goals of 



Thailand Hotel Standard is sustainable growth in the 

hotel industry. The environment matters in today’s 

global world.



Tourism in Thailand 

Tourism is a major part of the Thai economy with 13.5 million visitors in 

2009 and with tourism accounting for 6.5% of the nation’s gross domestic 

product. It is Thailand’s single largest foreign-exchange earner. According to 

the “World Tourism Rankings”, Thailand was the 18th most visited country in 

2007. In the 2008, according to Euromonitor International’s list of “Top City 

Destinations”, Bangkok ranked third behind London and New York. 

In 2010 foreign tourist arrivals increased almost 

14% from January to June. Almost 49% of all visitors 

came from East Asia, the three main groups being 

Malaysian, Japanese and Chinese. European visitors 

were second, with majority visitors from the UK, 

Germany and Russia. Seventy percent of visitors 

from the America’s are United Stated citizens. 

Indians are the largest group of tourists from South 

Asia, while the fastest growing sector of tourists is 

from the Middle East. 

The popularity of Thailand as a tourist destination 

is most often attributed to its diversity. In terms of 

landscape, Thailand offers mountains, valleys, plains, 

jungle, cities and beaches. Because Thailand has 

never been colonized it offers the tourist a unique 

opportunity to experience a mostly unchanged 

Asian culture that is rich in diversity. While mostly 

Buddhist, other influences include the Chinese and 

the Islamic southern regions. Architecture, temples, 

food and nightlife all reflect this diversity. 

Due to its ever increasing standards, the 

hospitality industry in Thailand offers the perfect

When to Visit Thailand 

Like any popular tourist destination, Thailand has a “high season” and a “low 

season”. In reality there is no best time to visit Thailand. Even the rainy season 

is no real deterrent, as unlike sub-Saharan Africa, the rain is not constant. It 

comes and goes and even cools things down, making the heat much more 

tolerable. The rainy season is roughly July through October. 

A traveler to Thailand should consider what one wishes 

to travel to and what one wishes to travel away from. 

Avoiding extreme winter weather in North America 

and Europe accounts a great deal for Thailand’s “high 

season”, roughly November through March. For the 

budget traveler this may not be the best time as, of 

course, prices are higher and tourist attractions are 

more crowded. 

No matter what time of year one comes to Thailand, 

conditions are perfect somewhere in the Kingdom. 

If one’s destination is Central Thailand and the East, 

November to mid February is best. If the destination is 

the beaches on the east coast – Pattaya, Rayong, or Koh 

Chang - the best time is December to May. 

If headed to the old Lanna Kingdom of Northern 

Thailand and to the Northeast, it should be noted that 

winter temperatures sometimes reach zero degrees 

centigrade in the mountains. It, however, is still the 

best time to visit (November through February). For 

those interested in experiencing the Thai New Year 

or Songkran in all its modern raucous glory and in its 

traditional glory, Northern Thailand in April is a must. 

Just keep in mind that it is a water festival and you will 

be drenched. 

While the other regions of Thailand experience 

three seasons – summer, rainy and winter – Southern 

Thailand really only has two seasons – summer 

season and rainy season. If the islands of the Andaman 

Sea are the preferred destinations mid November 

through April are best. East of the Thai peninsula, the 

destinations of Koh Samui and Hat Yai are best visited 

from December to June. 

Bargain hunters should consider visiting Thailand 

from June through September. There are some great 

discount deals for the budget traveler and the crowds 



of the winter months are avoided. No matter 

when one visits Thailand, it is a good time. The 

average temperature range throughout the 

Kingdom varies from 15 degrees to 37 degrees 

centigrade. While there is a rainy season, it can 

rain any time of year and never rains constantly. 

Why choose Thailand as a holiday destination? 

The Kingdom has just about anything any 

tourist could wish for. The food is fantastic and 

varied. It is possible to experience another 

culture and even several different cultures while 

still having the comforts of home. Swimming, 

beaches, water sports, island shopping are 

all year round attractions. Museums, temples, 

historical buildings and unique architecture 

abound. Orchids, butterflies, and a further wide 

range of flora and fauna can be experienced 

by nature lovers. There are hills and mountains 

in the north, tropical jungle, mangroves and 

pristine white sand beaches. Not only can the

ancient sights of Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Si 

Satchanalai beckon.

cities stage more film festivals than Bangkok does. The 

city regularly hosts a number of plays, operas, musicals 

and ballet performances and if you are a historical buff 

the National Museum, the Vimanmek Teak Museum, 

the Royal Barges Museum and the Grand Palace will 

keep you busy. 

Jim Thompson’s House is also usually a must visit for 

anyone travelling to Bangkok. The man who brought 

Thai silk to the world disappeared without a trace 

in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia back in 1967. 

And if you are into snakes, then you should visit the 

Snake Farm at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, 

where you can watch daily milkings and feedings of 

the reptiles. 

Bangkok is truly a shopper’s cornucopia: starting at 

the Emporium on Sukhumvit Road, then moving 

west you’ll find Central Chitlom, Gaysorn and Amarin 

Plazas, Central World Plaza, Siam Paragon (featuring an 

IMAX theatre and Siam Ocean World), and the Siam 

Discovery Centre - all within short Skytrain distance

selection of high-class shopping malls in any other city

Only In Bangkok 

Bangkok has three spectacular rooftop restaurants:

Almost all major airlines fly into Suvanabhumi, 

Bangkok’s international airport. Don Muang, the 

old international airport, situated across town 

still services some domestic flights. And a rapid 

transit link has just opened up making getting

Chiang Mai, the hub of the north, 

and Thailand’s second largest city 

is the former capital of the ancient 

Lanna kingdom. The Night Bazaar, 

a shopper’s cornucopia, and Doi 

Suthep, a temple sixteen kilometres 

outside of town that provides 

magnificent views of Chiang Mai, are 

favourites spots for tourists. The old 

town itself is surrounded by a moat 

and its ancient temples and history 

lend itself to great walking tours. 

Northern Thailand 

Many superb five-star resorts and hotels such as the 

Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, and the Four Seasons 

Chiang Mai have opened in and around Chiang Mai 

proper. The city has an international airport and a 

number of budget airlines service it domestically. 

Along the west bank of the Ping River, just north of 

the Nawarat Bridge lies a trendy area featuring the 

Good View, Gallery and Riverside eateries, all are 

worth a gander as is the nightclub La Brasserie. And 

Nimanhemin Road has become a hot spot for trendy 

furnishings and design items for up-market homes and 

villas. For the kids, the Chiang Mai Night Safari with its 

wide selection of animals is a big hit. 

Songkran, or Buddhist New Year, has a history of being 

wet, wild and wholly in Chiang Mai as everybody just 

gets into a gigantic water fight for three or four days 

in mid-April. 

Chiang Mai has long been known for its elephant 

camps and treks and 100 km south, just outside of 

Lampang, lies the Elephant Conservation Centre, 

where you can learn to be a mahout, and the world’s 

first elephant hospital, run by Soraida Salwala. Lampang 

is the only town in Thailand to still offer horse-drawn 

carts as a mode of transportation. 

South of Lampang lies Sukhothai, the country’s first 

capital and home to Sukhothai (meaning the Dawn 

of Happiness” and Si Satchannalai-Chaliang National 

Parks, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Bangkok 

Airways flies to Sukhothai and it’s a 5-6 hour bus ride 

from Bangkok, or it can be accessed from the nearby 

train station in Phitsanuloke. 

And if you happen to be near Pichit in early September 

check out their annual long-boat races, which are always 

good fun for the entire family. 

Many come to Mae Hong Son to get a glimpse of the 

Padauang or “long-necked” women, the majority of 

who live in the village of Nai Soi, 35km northwest of 

town. The coil around their neck can weigh between 

5-22kg and stretch up to 30cm long and there is a 

long running debate as to their exploitation for tourist 

purposes. 

Doi Inthanon (Thailand’s highest mountain), situated in 

a national park, is a popular day-trip destination and a 

favourite for birdwatchers and naturalists because of 

its many species of plants, animals and birds. Nearby, 

the meditation retreat at Wat Phra That Si Chom 

Thong is quite popular and draws students from all 

over Thailand and around the world. The circular drive 

from Chiang Mai, past Chom Thong, the entrance to 

Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, through 

Pai back to Chiang Mai is also quite interesting. And 

a couple hours south of Mae Sariang in the Mae Sot 

area lie a number of Karen & Burmese refugee camps, 

where many volunteers have offered their services 

over the years. 

Chiang Rai is itself a much more laid back town than 

Chiang Mai. Traffic jams are not a major concern yet 

and it still has that small-town feel to it. Trains don’t 

run to Chiang Rai, but domestic airlines and a busy 

bus network service it. 

From Chiang Rai, you can visit the old Kuomintang 

sanctuary of Mae Salong, now a hill station, teaming 

with tea plantations, and providing wonderful views 

of the surrounding countryside. If you get a chance to 

do this trip by motorbike, by all means do as you will 

find it an exhilarating experience. A short trip away 

from Mae Salong is Doi Tung and the Queen Mother’s 

Mae Fah Luang Foundation with its beautifully tended 

gardens. 



A little north of Chiang Saen, lies the Golden 

Triangle where Burma, Laos and Thailand meet 

at the junction of the Mekong and Nam Ruak 

Rivers. 

Further south and a nice spot to relax for a 

few days is Chiang Khong. Across the river from 

this town in Laos lies Huay Xai, where you can 

take a longtail boat or ferry to Luang Prabang 

(the whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage 

site). Chiang Khong is also a major conduit for 

goods moving between Thailand and China. 

The temperatures tend to be cooler in Chiang 

Mai and the north, so check the weather before 

you go and be prepared to bring some chilly 

weather gear. 

The tourist infrastructure is back in place. And 

the panorama from the viewpoint atop Phi 

Phi Don overlooking Ao Ton Sai and Ao Lo 

Dalam is still one of the most photographed 

in the region.

Northeastern Thailand 

The Northeast (or Isarn) is known for its 

friendly people, who make up the bulk 

of Thailand’s service industry. The area 

has an extensive network of ancient 

Khmer temples, the most impressive 

being Phanom Rung (the largest and 

best restored Khmer temple in Thailand), 

Prasat Khao Phra Wihan (located on the 

Cambodian border) and Phimai (located 

just outside of Nakhon Ratchasima, or 

Korat, as it is called by locals). 

Khao Yai, which is Thailand’s oldest and most famous 

national park, is situated an hour outside of Korat 

and is a great place to see varied and many species 

of wildlife. There is accommodation in the park 

and nearby Pak Chong also has a number of small 

resorts. 

Further north, the hike to the high-altitude peak 

of Phu Kradung in Loei Province, one of the most 

photographed spots in Thailand, is a great adventure. 

Ubon Ratchathani’s Candle (Buddhist Lent in July), 



the Naga Fireballs near Nong Khai and the Yasothorn 

Rocket Festival (in late May) are also worth a look, if 

you happen to be in country at the time. 

The best way to travel to Isarn’s ancient temples 

and national parks is to rent a car and/or a driver, 

especially if you want to visit Prasat Khao Phra 

Wihan. This temple provides a spectacular outlook 

over the plans of northwest Cambodia from the cliff 

of the Dongrek escarpment. 

Khon Kaen is the centre of the northeastern silk 

industry with numerous villages producing their 

own mudmee designs. One town in particular, 

Chonnabot , is known for producing high-quality silk. 

Every December the city hosts a Silk Fair, where all 

the local villagers bring their best wares to market. 

The remmants of a civilisation dating back 7,500 

years can be found in Ban Chiang, about 50km east of 

Udonthani. Over 50 human skeletons can be seen in 

the excavation pit along with many pieces of pottery. 

The museum on site gives a fine historical record of 

the Ban Chiang era. 

The town of Nong Khai has surprisingly been a 

popular spot for Western retirees to settle down 

in. From there, you can zip over the Thai-Laos 

Friendship bridge into Laos, Vientiane is only a half- 

hour away. The sculptures in the Sala Kaew Sculpture 

Park, just outside of Nong Khai are bizarre and 

fascinating and worth a visit. 

The residents of Nakhon Pathom celebrate Loy 

Krathong by building 6-metre longboats out of 

bamboo and banana bark. The boats are then 

elaborately adorned and paraded through the 

streets, then at night they are illuminated and 

launched into the Mekong River. 

Surin is a probably most famous for its elephant 

roundup, held every November where the 

pachyderms do everything from playing football to 

taking part in beauty contests. The elephants walking 

the streets of Bangkok tend to be rented out by 

families from the Surin area. 

The northeast is famous for its spicy Thai salad 

(somtam), grilled spicy chicken (gai yang) and grilled 

insects, yes grilled insects. The region is Thailand’ 

poorest and suffers from bad drought at times, but 

it does have a rich and fascinating history, which 

included US air bases in Korat, Ubon Ratchathani 

and Udonthani during the Vietnam War. 

All the major urban areas in the northeast have 

domestic flights and can be accessed by road and 

rail.



About an hour outside of Bangkok 

sits Ayutthaya Historical Park, a 

former Thai capital and UNESCO 

World Heritage site. Renting a 

bicycle is the best way to see these 

ancient ruins, some of which are 

spectacularly lit up at night. 

Central Thailand 

Close by is the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace and a fun 

way to visit Ayutthaya and Bang Pa-In is by going up 

the Chao Phraya River in a refurbished rice barge. 

River taxi is also a good way to see Bangkok – as many 

commuters still take these express boats to work every 

day and you can rent long-tail boats to tour the many 

canals that shoot off from the main river. A little further 

north (or a seven-hour bus ride) lie Sukhothai and Si 

Satchanalai, both also World Heritage sites. Sukhothai 

was in the 13th and 14th centuries, and features the 

remains of a royal palace and 26 temples. Si Satchanalai, 

which is home to 19 monuments, can be reached from 

Sukhothai by car in about an hour. Bangkok Airways 

flies to Sukhothai daily, or can be accessed by train from 

nearby Phitsanulok. 

Four hours north of Bangkok lies Lopburi, whose city 

core is inhabited by hundreds of wild monkeys. Lopburi 

has even established its own monkey hospital to deal 

with these primates. This former summer capital of 

Siam was the favourite of King Narai, who kept his 

palace, Phra Narai Ratchaniwet there. While you are 

walking around Lopburi, dodging the monkeys, you can 

sitll see the remains of Constantine Phaulkon’s home, 

Chao Phraya Wichayen. Phaulkon, a close advisor 

to Narai, was the only foreigner to hold a mistrial 

position and was executed by Narai’s successor of King 

Phetracha as Narai lay on his deathbed. 

Nakhon Nayok has developed into somewhat of 

an adventurer’s paradise. Located only a couple 

hours northeast of Bangkok, guest houses and tour 

agencies have sprung up dealing with everything from 

whitewater rafting and kayaking to ATVs and rope 

courses through the jungle. Many resorts have also 

been built over beautiful sweeping vistas, so if you 

just want to kick back, read a book and enjoy nature 

there is plenty of opportunity to do that as well 

Saraburi is one of the central provinces in Thailand. 

It is surrounded by Lopburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, 

Nakhon Nayok, Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya. It has 

been an important town for centuries and believed 

to have been constructed in 1548 during the reign 

of King Maha Chakkraphat of Ayutthaya as a centre 

for recruiting troops. 

Located on the east side of the Chao Phraya river 

valley, Saraburi is covered by high plains and plateaus, 

while the western part is mostly low flat plains. 

Strategically located, it is only 110 km from Bangkok, 

the town is a gateway to the northeast. 

Today, Saraburi is famous for its cement 

manufacturing and the elephant fight scene in the 

move Alexander was staged in its jungles. 

The most important Buddhist temple is Wat Phra 

Phutthabat, built under King Songtham in the 17th 

century. It is the most popular pilgrimage site within 

central Thailand. The temple houses the footprint of 

Lord Buddha found on a stone panel near Suwan 

Banpot Hill. The footprint was found in the reign 

of King Songtham of Ayutthaya. A cone-shaped 

structure or mondop was built to cover the 

footprint. 



Nonthaburi is situated on the banks of Chao Phraya 

River. This province has fertile soil good for growing 

fruits and flowers. There are also many historical 

sites in this area. Located just 20 kilometres from 

Bangkok, Nonthaburi can be reached by car or by 

boat. The temples that can be found here are Wat 

Amphawan which houses a wooden Ho Trai Kiang 

Nam (a hall for keeping a scripture by a pond), Wat 

Sao Thong Thong, built in the Ayutthaya period; it has 

a beautiful Thai-style golden cone above the Buddha 

image, and Wat Khema Phirataram located by the 

river. Koh Kret, a tiny island by the Chao Phraya River, 

is famous for its fine, red-glazed pottery.



Pattaya is the entertainment and 

tourist hub of this region. U-Tapao 

Airport services international and 

domestic flights to Pattaya and 

you can actually catch a train from 

Bangkok as well, but the trip is slow. 

Buses to Pattaya from Bangkok leave 

from Ekamai and Mochit bus stations 

and from the bus terminal attached 

to Suvanabhumi Airport. 

Eastern Thailand 

Pattaya is really divided into three parts: Naklua (or 

Pattaya North), Central Pattaya (Party Central) and 

Jomtien Beach in the south. Naklua is a lot quieter and 

more family oriented, anything goes in Central Pattaya 

and Jomtien has always been a weekend retreat for 

Thais and it is packed on the weekends. More and 

more condominium developments are springing up, 

particularly in Jomtien. 

Tennis courts, go-kart tracks, fitness center and 

Thai-boxing gyms are all available in Pattaya as are 

elephants rides, motorscooters, monster motorbike, 

and convertible Jeeps. 

To keep the adrenaline pumping shooting ranges are 

available as is scuba diving (there are many ship wrecks 

in the area), snorkeling, jet-skiing, cable skiing, deepsea 

fishing, windsurfing, speed boating, water-skiing, 

parasailing, and aerial sports such as gliding ultra-lights 

and flying motor-propelled gliders. The city also has 

its own Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, bungee 

jump, open-air zoo (outside of town), tiger zoo, and 

aquarium. 

There are also numerous restaurants, bars, theaters, 

cabaret shows, night clubs, bowling halls, billiard & 

snooker clubs, discos, sauna & massage parlors, not to 

mention the incredible shopping opportunities, which 

are always available. 

Koh Samet, which is only a short drive from Bangkok, 

and accessed by the pier at Ban Phe has some of the 

finest white sand in the country and many Bangkokians 

chose to make this their weekend getaway because of 

its accessibility. 

Koh Chang, the country’s second largest island is 

now much more accessible since Bangkok Airways 

starting flying to Trat. Its sunsets are superb, and the 

more adventurous may want to explore some of the 

remote islands in nearby Cambodia. 

The lesser known Koh Si Chang, accessed by boat 

from the town of Sri Racha, features Hat Tha Wang 

Palace, the former summer palace of King Rama V. 

Summiting its Tham Yai Phrik Vipassana Monastery, 

you can get a great view of the surrounding ocean, 

which is full of tankers on one side and glorious 

empty ocean on the other. 

Chantaburi is known for its gemstones, as it is the 

centre for buying rubies and sapphires from across 

Southeast Asia. The town also has a significant 

Vietnamese population with their own fascinating 

history. And if you happen to be in Chonburi in 

October check out the water buffalo races, great fun 

for all involved. 

This area also has one of the greatest concentrations 

of good golf courses in the world and as such has 

been dubbed a “golfer’s paradise”. You can play on a 

different spectacular course each day, without having 

to change hotels. 

The Thai government has spent a lot of time, money 

and effort trying to tout the Eastern Seaboard as 

the “Detroit of the East” and many of the world’s 

biggest car manufacturers have established factories 

in this region. 



And for those of you enjoying your time in Thailand 

who want to remain in the country, but need a 

new visa to do so, the most convenient border run 

is to Aranyaprathet, about five hours by bus from 

Bangkok.



Kanchanaburi is a very pleasant place to hang out 

and relax for a few days as there are many affordable 

places to stay like the Felix, Cum Saed, Camelia and 

the Riverkwai Bridge Resorts. A number of guest 

houses are built right on the River Kwai and its 

tributaries, and a little further north near Sai Yok 

(where the river scenes in The Deer Hunter were 

filmed), the Yoko River Kwai Resort and others 

provide for a great getaway from Bangkok. 

Thailand’s Tiger Temple (Wat Pa Luangta Bua 

Yannasampanno) is also located in Kanchanaburi 

Western Thailand 

Kanchanaburi, and its infamous “Bridge on the River Kwai”, is one of the prime tourist attractions in western Thailand. This quaint 

little town with its Kanchanaburi and Chung Kai war cemeteries and its JEATH and Thai-Burma Railway Centre museums is a living 

memorial to the anguish Allied POWs and forced Asian labour had to endure trying to build a railway through to India during 

WWII. And Hellfire Pass, 80km up the road, built the Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce, is a testament to man’s tenacity 

under the most strenuous of wartime conditions.

from poachers in the nearby Thai-Burmese border 

jungle. 

Kanchanaburi is only a two-hour journey by car or 

bus from Bangkok, but the train trip is much more 

enjoyable and leaves from the Thonburi station three 

times a day. 

Half way between Kanchanaburi and Bangkok lies 

Nakhon Pathom, home of Phra Pathom Chedi, 

the tallest Buddhist monument in the world. It is 

also home to Sanam Chand Palace, a favourite 

residence of King Rama VI. The town also lays claim 

to Thailand’s Human Imagery Museum, where you 

can see life-like resin sculptures of famous figures in 

Thai history. And it was the location for much of the 

filming of the movie, Good Morning Vietnam. 

The Rose Garden is a nice place to stay if you are 

planning to spend any time in this area as it has a 

Cultural Village featuring elephant rides, displays of 

classical Thai dancing, martial arts and handicrafts, all 

surrounded by some 20,000 rose bushes. 

About halfway between Nakhom Pathom and 

Bangkok lies Thailand’s most famous Floating Market, 

Damnoen Saduak — pictures of which can be seen 

almost anywhere in the world. 

On the Gulf of Thailand side, Hua Hin has long been 

thought of as the weekend retreat for Thais (the 

Royal Family maintains its Klai Kangwon residence 

here), but more and more foreigners have started 

going there as it is only a 3 & ½ hour drive from 

Bangkok. 

Just north of Cha Am lies Petchaburi, which is chock 



full of ancient Buddhist temples. Great sunsets can 

be seen by climbing Khao Wong, a hill in the centre 

of town, which is home to one of King Mongkut’s 

(Rama IV) palaces. Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest 

national park is 55 km away from Petchaburi. Its twin 

waterfalls of Pa La-U with their 15 tiers are very 

impressive sights indeed. The park is also noted for 

its multiple species of butterflies. 

There are a number of excellent golf courses in and 

around the Hua Hin area, including Thailand’s oldest, 

the Royal Hua Hin Golf Club. Many of these courses 

have been promoting golf/spa packages, so you can 

combine time on the greens, with staying in a fancy 

resort and partaking in a traditional Thai massage or 

spa treatment. 

And just south of Prachuap lies the narrowest 

stretch in Thailand. Starting in Wang Duan you walk 

across Thailand in a day to the Burmese border. As 

the crow flies its 11km, but hiking it, depending on 

your route takes between 15-18km. 

Khao Sam Roi Rot National Park (Three Hundred 

Peaks) makes for an interesting visit given its 

abundance of limestone cliffs, beaches, and caves. Its 

coastal marshlands and lagoons make it a great place 

to birdwatch. Serows have been spotted on Khao 

Krachom (605 metres), while Irrawaddy dolphins 

have been seen off the coastline. The Dolphin Bay 

Resort in Pranburi is a good place to stay if you are 

intent on doing some serious dolphin watching. 

Legend has it King Rama IV died from malaria 

a couple months after contracting malaria from 

mosquito bites while observing a solar eclipse with 

foreign and Thai guests in Khao Sam Roi Yot. The 

Phraya Nakhon Cave contains a royal sala built for 

King Rama V, as he stopped over there on his voyages 

between Nakhon Si Thammart and Bangkok. 

All main areas in the western region are accessible by 

either road or rail.

If you do end up visiting Phuket, try some sea 

kayaking for a change of pace and the June Bahtra 

cruise up to James Bond Island is definitely worth the 

trip. And if you visit the island mid-to-late October 

make sure you take in the island’s Vegetarian Festival. 

Devotees somehow manage to pierce their skin with 

the strangest of metallic objects, and perform other 

acts of self-mortification that will leave you shaking 

your head in disbelief.

Southern Thailand 

Phuket, on the country’s Andaman coast, is Thailand’s wealthiest and largest province and it has made a spectacular recovery from 

the 26 December 2004 tsunami. Home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world and its towns such as Patong, Karon and 

Kata can provide you with almost every type of entertainment imaginable. If you crave a more laid-back vacation beaches further 

north like Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Nai Yang, Nathon and Mai Khao can provide that as well. And Phuket’s golf courses like Blue 

Canyon and Mission Hills are some of the finest in the land.

the old town centre of Phuket Town declared a 

UNESCO historical site because of its surviving 

Sino-Portuguese architecture. 

The Racha Islands just off of Ao Chalong in southern 

Phuket are known for their proximity to big game 

fish like the billfish, black marlin and sailfish, as well as 

several varieties of tuna such as the yellowfin, longfin, 

dogtooth and skipjack. The Racha resort is also a 

very comfortable place to spend some time and the 

snorkeling and diving in the area is quite good. 

Further south, Koh Lanta features ten beautifully 

flat white-sand beaches on the western side of the 

island. The island is a good spot to get in some great 

diving, snorkeling and island hopping and a large 

national park on the southern island is a great spot 

for trekking and wildlife spotting. 

Before the 26 December 2004 tsunami, Khao Lak 

was seen as the “in” place to build a resort, and 

many Thais did so. The problem was that many of 

them built on flat land, near the water’s edge without 

any kind of natural or man-made barrier between 

their resort and the sea, so when the tsunami hit, 

it hit hard. 

But despite the trauma it experienced, Khao Lak 

remains an incredibly beautiful and serene place. This 

is Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi 30 years ago. 

Opportunities for adventure sports or eco-tours 

abound: trekking in Khao Sok and Khao Lak National 

Parks, river canoeing, kayaking, mountain-biking, 

and scuba-diving in the nearby Similans and Surins, 

generally regarded as the most beautiful diving spots 

in the Andaman Sea. 

If you happen to make it to Ranong, a couple hours 

north of Khao Lak, and a want a true adventure 

head out to the Mergui Archipelago, which consist of 

800 uninhabited islands in Burmese waters. Facilities 

are few and far between, but these have been 

called “the world’s last islands in tropical waters, 

still in pristine conditions.” While in Ranong, make 

sure you pay a trip to the Raksawarin Hot Springs, 

located a kilometre outside of town. Boats can be 

chartered from Saphan Plaa (Fish Bridge) to visit 

the surrounding islands and the casino at Thahtay 

Kyun Island. 

The karst topography of Krabi Province is 

breathtaking and a must see for any traveller to 

Thailand. Krabi has quickly developed into a worldfamous 

rock-climbing locale. Tourist Krabi is really 

divided into two different areas: Ao Nang, which you 

can access by road; and Railay Beach, which you must 

access by water. The province is also known for its 



cave temples, many of which make for an interesting 

day trip, especially Wat Tham Sua (the Tiger Cave 

Temple), a 1,237 step mountaintop shrine with 

spectacular views of the surrounding area. 

Further south, Kradan Island in Trang province 

annually stages the world’s largest underwater 

marriage ceremony every Valentine’s Day. This event 

is sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. 

Three of Thailand’s most famous islands: Koh Samui, 

Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao lie on the Gulf of 

Thailand side. “Discovered” by Western backpackers 

in the early 1970s as a cheaper alternative to Phuket, 

Samui changed considerably when Bangkok Airways 

put in its airport and started frequent flights to 

the island. Today, you’ll find every kind of tourist 

imaginable – Eastern and Western alike. Chaweng 

and Lamai are the island’s most popular beaches, 

where practically everything is available, but if you 

want to relax and kick-back Mea Nam and Bophut 

Beaches offer relaxing alternatives. 

Samui is a good jumping off spot to reach Koh 

Tao and Koh Phangnan. And a boat ride away lies 

Angthong National Park, comprised of more than 

than 40 islands. This was the inspiration for Alex 

Garland’s The Beach, later made into a film starring 

Leonardo DiCaprio. 

Koh Phangnan is famous for its full moon party, 

staged monthly on Had Rin, which has attracted 

many over the years. So much is said about this 

party, that many forget that is a truly glorious island 

to explore and spend time on. 

As Thailand is the world’s largest seafood exporter 

and much of the fish comes from the south, you are 

bound to experience some of the finest seafood 

you have ever tasted while travelling down here. And 

as you get closer and closer to the Malay border, 

you will no doubt notice the Malay influence on the 

exquisite curries and foods of the southern region.
