When you read this you’ll probably know the result of the Crawley game in the fourth and final qualifying round of the competition, played on October 28th. Whatever the result, getting to play a dream derby against our local rivals from the Conference proper has been quite a result for Lewes Football Club. I’m just sorry that none of the games so far have been at home, so most of our fans haven’t been able to see us in the competition. We started out with a modest victory at Hendon. It wasn’t a great game against a team which is one rung down the league ladder, and struggling at that level. It took us 70 minutes to get our first goal, and we didn’t wrap the game up until deep into injury time. Having said that they barely managed to create a chance, and in the Cup it’s not the performance that counts, it’s the result. I was very pleased to be in the draw for the next round. The FA did us no favours with that, pitching us against Dorchester away. It was a long journey to play a team in the same division who had made a similar start to the season as us. On paper it looked like anyone’s game, then: but on the pitch we absolutely battered them. We ended up winning 4-0, with goals from Juke Box (Andy Drury), Gary Holloway and two from Boothie (Paul Booth). After a bit of a dry patch at the start of the season, Boothie’s really hit form, scoring five goals in as many games, and creating a number of assists, besides. Afterwards their manager told me we were the best team they’d played that season by a mile. We made a so-so start to the season, but I think we’ve turned the corner now. We’ve won four out of the last five games with clean sheets. The only hiccup was the game against Bishops Stortford at home, which we lost 3-2. It was a game we should have won by a mile, but their goalkeeper and defence were magnificent, and while we had to work bloody hard for our two goals, we gifted them their three. The last goal in the 87th minute was a real catalogue of errors. Leon Legge gave away a needless free-kick, Wilko (Paul Wilkerson) didn’t get enough men in the wall and his positioning was woeful, enabling their guy to virtually pass the ball into the net.
