ESMA SULTAN pallazio
kiss exhibition
A once abandoned ruin has returned to the 21st-century as a
multipurpose event space in a busy entertainment district on the banks
of the Bosphorus Strait in Ortakoy, Istanbul. Global Architectural
Development () has designed a glass and steel box tucked inside the
masonry remains. The original brick structure was built approximately
200 years ago as a summer retreat for Esma Sultan, the wife of an
Ottoman Sultan. A century later, it was gutted by fire, and the exterior
walls were all that survived.
In the 1990s, the building was leased from the government by The
Marmara Hotel Group. They cleaned out the debris filled plot and
began to use the space for summertime open-air concerts and
receptions. In response to the venue's growing popularity, The Marmara
Group decided in 1999 to make the beautiful landmark ruin usable
throughout the year.
They commissioned GAD Architecture, a firm founded in Turkey, that
has since moved to New York. Partners Gokhan Avcioglu and Ozlem
Ercil have a special interest in merging the cultural and technological.
They understand architecture as a practice that values both modern
experiment and historical precedent.
The architects decided to leave the existing walls, which express the
palace's former nobility, and design within them a thin but strong
stainless steel and glass box. This juxtaposition, they say, "constantly
reminds us of the multiple histories reflected in the new design."
GAD Mimarl›k (Global Architectural
Development) taraf›ndan, yeniden fonksiyonland›r›lan binan›n 19. tüzy›lda
geçirmifl oldu¤u a¤›r yang›ndan geriye kalan y›¤ma tafl duvarlar› içerisinde
çelik ve camdan oluflan bir strüktür oluflturuldu.
1990’lar›n bafl›nda Marmara Grubu taraf›ndan devletten kiralanan ve
tüm enkaz› temizlenen bina önceleri yaz aylar›nda konser ve resepsiyonlar›n
düzenlendi¤i bir mekan olarak kullan›lmaktayd›. Giderek artan potansiyeli
yap›y› y›l boyunca kullan›labilece¤i bir duruma getirme karar› ald›.
Mimarlar, yap›n›n tarihi asaletini vurgulayan mevcut duvarlar›n korunarak,
