CONGRATULATIONS 2007 ASSOCIATES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS!
Dear Associates,
I would like to give my appreciation for being selected as the recipient of the Ron Holeman Scholarship.
This will greatly help in paying the cost of tuition, therefore progressing both my education and my future
career by reducing my reliance on loans.
I was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington, with my parents and two brothers, where I attended Prairie
High School and began examining the field of engineering. As a senior in high school I worked as an intern
for Rockwell Collins Flight Dynamics. There I designed, built, and programmed an automated robotic tool
which optimized the production process of a prototype that Rockwell Collins was developing. Working full
time I developed and debugged an array of processes to robotically align and focus optical chips in the
device with computer artificial intelligence. This experience solidified my desire to become an electrical
engineer.
I am currently a junior at Washington State University working towards a degree in Electrical Engineering.
I take my studies seriously and have been named the Outstanding Sophomore of the Year in Electrical
Engineering by the College of Engineering faculty. When not studying I work as a math department tutor to
help students prepare for homework and exams. In my free time I enjoy practicing judo and swimming. I also strive to make my community
a better place. As a member of the Cougar Marching Band, a friend and I organized a group of students to collect over 600 canned goods for
families in need for the holiday season.
Upon completing my degree in Electrical Engineering, I plan to become an electrical engineer and serve the growing demand of electronic
goods. After acquiring a stable job I hope to start a family and build towards my children’s education.
Sincerely,
($1,250.00 Ron Holeman Scholarship Recipient)
Dear Associates, first of all, thank you for awarding me this scholarship, it helps immensely. I will be
a sophomore at Whitworth University (formerly known as Whitworth College) in Spokane,
Washington. There I am majoring in mathematics and am pursuing an education certification also.
After I have completed my 4 years I hope to teach math at a high school level and possibly coach cross
country and track. I am currently on the Whitworth cross country and track team and had a successful
first season. I was second on the cross country team this past year and ran the 10k and 5k for the track
team. I also am treasurer of Whitworth’s Fellowship of the Christian Athletes club (FCA). I loved my
freshman year and managed to maintain a 3.974 accumulative grade point average.
Thank you,
JoAnne Mayer ($1,000.00 Michael Caldwell Honorary Scholarship Recipient)
Dear Associates, my name is Lisa Weller and I would like to thank you so much for selecting
me to receive the Associates Scholarship. This is a great honor and I am very excited to be
selected. I am currently attending Oregon State University and I am studying microbiology. I
plan to study there until I receive my Master's Degree in Microbiology. After I graduate, I
would like to go into research studying viruses. This scholarship will be a great help for me
during my studies and I thank you so much for helping me reach my goals.
Sincerely,
Lisa Weller ($900.00 Scholarship Recipient)
WATTS NEWS 2 December/January/February 2008
Dear Associates, thank you very much for selecting me as one of recipients of the Bonneville Power
Administration Associates Foundation Scholarship. It is a great honor to be selected and I will use the
scholarship at Oregon State University this fall.
Being selected as the recipient of the Bonneville Power Administration Associates Scholarship has very special
meaning to me. My father and mother, Cliff & Patti Perigo, Grandfather, Walter Keller, step-sister, Laurie
Perigo, and Aunt, Dorothy Betzing, have all been employees of BPA! I can’t remember a time when BPA did
not play a significant role in my life.
I graduated with high honors this June from Lake Oswego High School, Lake Oswego, Oregon. I am registered
at Oregon State University for fall term as a pre-med student and will be majoring in both
Biophysics/Biochemistry and Radiation Health Physics. I will be talking 3rd year college Spanish and hope to
increase my level of fluency and eventually serve as a bi-lingual physician. OSU has exceptional research
opportunities, and I plan to be very active in this endeavor as well as the science department community. I have
been selected as a participant in OSU’s University Scholars Program, designed to provide a variety of leadership
and service opportunities. Through this program, I hope to develop strong connections with other students,
faculty and be a positive contribution to the local community. Last summer, I was selected for the Saturday Academy (ASE) program and
worked with Dr. John Brigande, Regenerative Hearing Center, OHSU Hospital, where I helped design research procedures that found a less
expensive and time consuming way to detect cells infected with a particular virus.
Currently, I am volunteering with OHSU in the Radiation/Oncology Department where I am observing patient care, treatment, and learning about
the various equipment used for cancer management. I am working directly with physicians, medical residents and technicians on all aspects of
cancer treatment and patient care. Radiation/Oncology is of special interest to me and is a direct link to one of my majors in college (Radiation
Health Physics).
I have also been a part time employee at OHSU in food services since October 2006.
Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I hope to attend medical school at OHSU or an equally recognized medical facility and will decide
at that time an area of specialty. I plan to do several additional shadowing/internship experiences in the medical community to supplement my
school curriculum. I was born and raised in the Portland area and love the Pacific Northwest – even the rain! My goal is to establish a positive
reputation in both the local and medical community, first as a student and secondly as a physician, and bring my skills back home to establish a
medical practice. In my journey so far, I have learned to be a good and empathic listener, trust my faith in God, and feel these are valuable lessons
and beliefs that I will take with me when I become a physician.
Thank you again for selecting me for your scholarship.
Sincerely,
Christopher Betzing ($900.00 Scholarship Recipient)
Dear Associates, my name is Kimberly Pendergrass and I am very excited to tell you that I will be
attending Oregon State University next fall. I plan on studying business and art history during my
time at OSU and hopefully study for a year abroad. I am a recent graduate of Tigard High School
where I graduated with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Some of my favorite activities in
high school that I hope to continue in college are softball, lacrosse, and art. In the future I would like
to won my own business (hopefully, art related) and travel the world. I am currently working and
saving money to backpack across Europe in a year or two. I want to thank Bonneville Power
Administration Associates and the Scholarship Committee for their gracious scholarship to help me
continue my education.
Thank you.
