A REFLECTION ON
SUNDAY’S GOSPEL
Fear crippled King Herod and caused him to
make some very bad decisions. Instead of rejoicing in
the birth of Christ, he felt threatened by Him. The
Magi, wise and learned, saw through Herod’s scheme
and protected Jesus from being killed. What is there in
our own lives that cause us fear and make bad
decisions? In this New Year, may we be wise and
learned like the Magi, and follow after Christ and His
teachings so that we may dwell in love and peace and
find ourselves rid of fear and anxiety.

Dear Parish Family,
Today we welcome our new class of Confirmation
Candidates at the 5:00 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses as
they embark on the proximate preparation for
Confirmation which will be celebrated for them next
Fall. Today’s enrolment of the Confirmation
Candidates calls forth from them a commitment to
learn, to serve and to worship. They will learn more
specifically what the Sacrament of Confirmation is in
light of the other Sacraments and their Catholic Faith.
They will serve others through specific Service Projects
which will teach them to put the Word of God into
action. They will commit themselves to participating in
the worshipping community of Saint James on Sundays
and Holydays as they prepare to be fully initiated into
the Catholic Faith Community. Let us all pray for these
Candidates during this time of their formation.
When children are in their early years of
formation, most families have a litany of rules that are
intended to help the young ones grow to well-balanced,
happy, wholesome and holy lives: “Wash your
hands...Brush your teeth... say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank
you”...say your prayers...” Along with these and many
others most have also heard “Look both ways” before
we venture out to the street that would lead us from the
warmth and safety of home. At the outset of the year
now beginning, the scriptures we will be hearing during
these weeks offer similar advice: “Look both ways.”
Look back with gratitude at the year now being
committed to history, and look ahead with hope and
trust to the future we have yet to experience.
Unfortunately some of us come to this New Year with
the baggage of the past, with regret and guilt and
perhaps these emotions are truly warranted. However,
the gift of the New Year invites us to surrender the past
to the past so we can appreciate the grace of a fresh
beginning. As we look both ways, we do not linger on
the looking back. Rather, we press forward, as did
former U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold,
who said, “For all that has been, thanks! For all that
will be, Yes!” (Markings, Alfred A. Knopf, New York:
1964).

FEED MY PEOPLE
We need volunteers! We pick-up the left-over
items at Panera in Short Hills on Sunday evening and
Monday mornings. We then drop the off at the Church
on Monday morning. Everything is then delivered to
Saint Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth by a
dedicated team of drivers. Many thanks to all involved
for we cannot do it without you! Contact Lisa for more
details on how to volunteer.
SANDWICH MAKERS
The next collection will be Monday, January 30.
We need cheese, meat, meat and cheese sandwiches
without condiments. Please individually wrap and label
the contents with one group per bag and drop them off
before 11:00am at the School Kitchen. Contact Lisa to
volunteer.
MEAT LOAF MAKERS
The next collection will be Saturday, January 28
before the 5:00pm Mass and Sunday, January 29 from
10:00am – 12:00pm in the Gathering Area of the
Church.. We need 2-3 lb. meat loaves cooked, wrapped
and frozen each month. Home pick-ups can be
arranged. Contact Lisa for more details on how to
volunteer.
FOOD COLLECTION
The next collection for non-perishable food will be
on the weekend of January 28/29. Please drop off items
in the Gathering Area of the Church.

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL
Catholic Charities’ Emergency Food and Nutrition
Network coordinates bulk food collection and
distribution through a network of 75 parish-based food
pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in the Archdiocese
of Newark. Last year, the network served over 40,000
people from 241,000 pounds of donated food.
In addition, the network administers federal
emergency funds for pantries in Bergen, Essex, Hudson
and Union counties. The program also sponsors the
Help a Family at Christmas project, which links donors
with needy families who would not be able to celebrate
Christmas without outside support. Thank You!

BAPTISM
Communal Baptisms are held on the last Sunday of each
month at 1:30pm in the Church. They can also be scheduled
during the Masses on the weekend. Please contact the Parish
Office to arrange for the Baptismal Prep Class either before or
after the arrival of your baby.
RECONCILIATION
Individual Confessions are heard every Saturday at 11:00am
in the Church, or anytime by appointment. Penance Services are
held during the year and will be announced.
EUCHARIST
Communion can be brought to the sick and homebound either
at home or in a facility. Please contact the Parish Office to make
arrangements.
CONFIRMATION
Adult Confirmation and RCIA, Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults (those wishing to enter the Catholic faith and those
wishing to complete their sacraments) are welcome and encouraged
to begin this process at anytime. Please contact the Parish Office
for details.
MARRIAGE
Couples interested in marriage are asked to contact one of the
priests or deacons at least one year prior to their desired date so
that arrangements can be made. For more information contact the
Parish Office.
VOCATIONS
Is God calling you to the priesthood or Religious Life? Speak
to one of our priests or call the Vocations Office 973-497-4365.
Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK
This Sacrament can be administered anytime by contacting
one of the priests. We make visits to area hospitals and nursing
homes. Please contact the Parish Office should this need arise. If
you need a ride to Church or to a doctor’s office, please contact the
Parish Office and a member of our Transportation Committee
will contact you.
THE RCIA PROCESS
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a
process where individuals who need to receive the sacraments of
initiation or who have never been baptized enter into full
communion with the faith. Contact the Parish Office for details.

Happy and healthy 2012 prayers to you and your
family! We are looking forward to the start of the New
Year. This weekend our Confirmation 2012 Candidates
are receiving a special covenant blessing in preparation
for Confirmation next October. All families should
have received an email from us with important
upcoming dates. Please call our office if you are the
parent of an 8th grader and did not receive the email.
While our 8th Graders are preparing for the
Sacrament of Confirmation, our 2nd Graders are busy
getting ready to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
on Saturday February 4th at 10:30.
We look forward to partnering with your family to
bring the teachings of our faith (Catechesis) to your
children. Religious education is an ongoing formation
from Grade 1 (Kindergarten is optional) through Grade
8; with the Sacrament of Confirmation taking place in
the fall of 9th Grade. If your child has not received
continuous religious education since receiving First
Holy Communion, please call the office.
Our parish website is the most convenient way to
communicate with you – please add our address to your
list of “favorites”.

Saint John the Apostle Church, 1805 Penbrook
Terrace in Linden has Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament with Benediction, Homily & Communion
every First Friday from 8:30-9:30pm. All are welcome
to attend this wonderful spiritual exercise of our faith.
SANCTUARY LAMP
BREAD & WINE MEMORIALS
If you would like to remember a loved one in a

MINISTRY SIGN-UPS
Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors
and Ushers please sign-up for the Masses you would
like to serve for New Year’s on the Bulletin Boards in
the Ministry Room.
RECEIVING COMMUNION
It is good to remind ourselves of the reverence
needed when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
When we approach the altar, if receiving on the hand,
please remove any gloves beforehand. Remember to
bow slightly without being ostentatious. If communion
runs out please wait for the Minister to return.
INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK
At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick.
Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially
in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening
condition. We will continue to pray for and mention
the names of our sick parishioners when we receive
notice from the family or the individual asking for
prayers. Their name will be mentioned for three weeks
and after the names will continue in the bulletin, until
we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens
we will mention the name again at Mass when notified.

prays through a wide variety of musical styles to ease
the stress of daily life and bring about a genuine sense
of peace and calm. All are welcome to this fee event.
NEW PARISH HYMNALS
We only have half of the hymnals memorialized to
date. If you haven’t yet done so, but are thinking about
it, please contact the Parish Office. Our goal is to have
all of the hymnals memorialized before November 27.
This is a great opportunity to remember a loved one.

COUNCIL NEWS
Keeping You Informed
SAVE THE DATE: The Tenth Anniversary of the
Church Celebration is scheduled for June 9, 2012 at
the 5:00pm Mass followed by a wine and cheese.
Smile: As part of our 10th Anniversary Celebration
we will be again offering family portrait photography
and will be assembling a new Parish Directory Book.
A suggestion has been made to ask families, who have
moved into the parish in the last 10 years, to make a
family stone to put in the ground near the Church.
Further information to come.
FUNDRAISER SURVEY: We will be working with the
fundraising committee to bring you some fun filled
activities. Feel free to stop to see us at the listening
table to share your ideas.
HANDYMAN PROJECT: The Handyman Project had
completed some handyman jobs last month. See our
request form in the bulletin. In addition, we are trying
to compile a snow shoveling team. Look for future
information.
HURRICANE IRENE ASSISTANCE: Monsignor Bill will
be requesting information to identify those in need.
Youth Connection: In response to our Youth Survey,
we will be designing and implementing a Saint James
Youth Facebook page.
NJ BISHOPS STATEMENT ON POVERTY: Monsignor
Bill shared the NJ Bishops Statement on Poverty.
There will be action plans to address poverty concerns.
LISTENING TABLE: The Council members present to
Monsignor any ideas, questions or concerns shared
with us.
NEXT MEETING: The Council will be meeting on
January 9. Look for us the weekend before at the
masses. We are there to listen to your needs and
concerns.
