MY REFLECTIONS ON
TODAY’S GOSPEL
Jesus called the disciples from their very busy lives to
come and follow Him. These men were successful
businessmen, providing well for their families and
themselves and contributing to their communities. They
were compelled, however, to drop what they were
doing and take a journey with a stranger who would for
ever change their lives and the course of human history.
If they didn’t take that leap of faith, where would we be
today Are we brave enough to take a leap of faith and
jump into a ministry of service Do it and find out.
THE PASTOR’S
LETTER
Reverend Monsignor
William Charles Hatcher
Dear Parish Family,
The celebrations have ended, the decorations have
been put away and the music has been stored for
another year. Another Christmas Season has come and
we are now into the Ordinary Time of the Church Year.
What have we heard this Christmas Season Did we
hear God speaking to us in a new or surprising way
Did He speak to you as you quietly reflected on the
birth of the Child of Bethlehem Did He speak to you
through the faces and songs of children who learned to
keep Christ in Christmas while the rest of the world is
trying to secularize Christmas into merely a holiday
Did He speak to you through the tears of the suffering,
the aching hearts of those who had no gifts for their
children, or the hungry and homeless who needed you
Has this Christmas celebration called you into a deeper
union with the Christ who came to save us
There are so many voices seeking our attention in
the world these days. Trying to determine what is right
and what is wrong, what is God’s will and what is my
will can get lost in the clamorous voices and sounds we
hear each day. There is so much to do that we hardly
have time to decide what our priorities should be. We
belong to many kingdoms: the family, work, school,
neighbourhoods and church. Have we set aside time to
consider the most important kingdom we belong to –
the eternal kingdom of God
Listen to the first reading today. Samuel, no longer
having his parents, had to learn to listen to new
authorities. At first, that meant listening to the call of
the priest Eli. Eli wasn’t the greatest mentor but one
thing he knew: When God speaks, you listen. God
awakened Samuel in order to plot a new direction for
his life. His willingness to accept God’s change of plans
for him can inspire us to go wherever God’s call may
lead.
Love,
ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL
Catholic Charities’ Emergency Food and Nutrition
Network coordinates bulk food collection and
distribution through a network of 75 parish-based food
pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in the Archdiocese
of Newark. Last year, the network served over 40,000
people from 241,000 pounds of donated food.
In addition, the network administers federal
emergency funds for pantries in Bergen, Essex, Hudson
and Union counties. The program also sponsors the
Help a Family at Christmas project, which links donors
with needy families who would not be able to celebrate
Christmas without outside support. Thank You!
STARTING THE NEW YEAR
WITH GRATITUDE
By Mrs. Mary McElroy
"Blessed are those that can give without remembering
and receive without forgetting.”
This quote applies to all of us, and is worth taking to
heart as 2012 gets underway. The Faculty and Staff send
their appreciation to the school families for their
generous Christmas donations and gifts, while Mrs.
Ponterio's 5th grade class would like to thank the
parish community for supporting its used cell phone
collection on behalf of Cell Phones for Soldiers
(CPFS). The results were phenomenal and far above
expectations. With your support, 347 cell phones were
collected. The cell phones will be recycled and provide
CPFS with cash used to purchase prepaid calling cards.
Every cell phone will provide approximately 150
minutes of free talk time for our military personnel. If
you do the math, that's over 52,000 minutes! The
H.S.A. thanks those who assisted with classroom
Christmas parties and all-around elflike help during
Advent and Christmas.
It’s re-registration time again! All presently enrolled
students may re-register for the 2012-2013 School year
prior to Open House. Watch for these forms to be sent
home on January 19, in the BROWN ENVELOPE.
NEW registrations will be taken on January 29, and any
classes with openings will be filled on a “First Come
Basis.” New families have already begun the
admissions process.
The office must insist that All Tuition and After
Care obligations for the current school year be up-todate
including the month of January before reregistering.
If you have any financial, placement, or
other questions or concerns, now is the time to reach
out to the school office.
DRESS TO IMPRESS
A sign at a classy restaurant read: “Dress to
impress-no denim tops or bottoms, no tee-shirts or
jerseys, no flannel shirts, no mini skirts and spaghetti
straps, no baseball caps, no combat/hiking boots, no
tennis shoes.” Below in larger print: NO EXCEPTIONS!
Many who come to Church would not be allowed to
enter that restaurant. Our Lord deserves fitting
worship. Having style can be achieved without losing
good taste. Let’s enter God’s house with good sense.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Have we missed hearing, “The Mass is ended, go in
peace” If we haven’t heard this, then we have left
before the Mass is finished. The Mass is not over until
the priest has kissed the altar and left the Sanctuary. We
are very blessed to be involved with the celebration of
the Mass. To receive the Body and Blood of Christ is
the very foundation of our faith. It is sad to see so
many people leaving early. Isn’t it time to honor and
respect our Lord by giving Him our complete respect
and devotion If there is a concern about getting out of
the parking lot, or picking up the Sunday paper along
with the bagels and crème cheese, why not stay a few
minutes more and thank God for all that He continues
to do for us There are exceptions, when a legitimate
event is pending, however, most of the time, it is fair to
say that isn’t the reason we leave early. Remember,
Judas left the table early too Something to think about.
RECEIVING COMMUNION
It is good to remind ourselves of the reverence
needed when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
When we approach the altar, if receiving on the hand,
please remove any gloves beforehand. Remember to
bow slightly without being ostentatious. If communion
runs out please wait for the Minister to return.
INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK
At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick.
Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially
in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening
condition. We will continue to pray for and mention
the names of our sick parishioners when we receive
notice from the family or the individual asking for
prayers. Their name will be mentioned for three weeks
and after the names will continue in the bulletin, until
we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens
we will mention the name again at Mass when notified.
