Due to the fact that frequent catastrophic consequences of dam failures are unacceptable, it is an important essential<br />

need for trained personnel in the areas of safety and maintenance. Many dams in Africa were designed and built<br />

decades ago and with time, these structures age and the level of safety becomes more complicated to assess,<br />

especially where original design and construction details are not known.<br />

In addition, foundation and dam degradation occurs for various reasons and many continue to worsen. To add to this,<br />

safety and design standards have changed over the years and many of these aging structures must be upgraded to<br />

meet current international standards. Research is required for the development and evaluation of new diagnostic<br />

monitoring tools and techniques in order to assess the stability and safety of existing dams.<br />

It is therefore necessary to do constant analysis and repair due to aging infrastructure and poor operational<br />

performance. In this regard, municipalities, government water officials, technical engineers and environmental<br />

experts are constantly working hard to strengthen maintenance, regularly rehabilitating dams, and improving dam<br />

management and safety. New repair models, materials and techniques can reduce the cost of required dam safety<br />

improvements.<br />

This seminar provides delegates with comprehensive instruction in dam safety inspection and evaluation. Although<br />

references will be made to organisational procedures and units of reclamation, the principles, concepts, and<br />

procedures are readily adaptable to any organization conducting a regulatory or in-house dam safety program for<br />

existing dams.<br />

Pieter is a Professional Engineer and dam specialist on design, operation, maintenance and<br />

management of dams in RSA. He is based in Limpopo Province and a Director in PG Consulting<br />

Engineers. He started his career in the Department of Water Affairs in 1982 and has nearly<br />

30years experience in the field of dam engineering.<br />

Bart Schoevaerts, General Manager Africa at Geobrugg<br />

Bart Schoevaerts Is the Managing Director of GEOBRUGG Southern Africa (pty) Ltd. He worked<br />

for 15 years at Shell International Petroleum Company of which 10 years in Africa (Ghana, Ivory<br />

Coast, Senegal & South Africa) and the last 3 years spending most of my time in the East (Japan,<br />

China, Singapore).. Bart joined Geobrugg AG in May 2010 as Manager for the Africa operations<br />

and has a Masters in Business Science in from EHSAL (Brussels)<br />
