Due to the fact that frequent catastrophic consequences of dam failures are unacceptable, it is an important essential
need for trained personnel in the areas of safety and maintenance. Many dams in Africa were designed and built
decades ago and with time, these structures age and the level of safety becomes more complicated to assess,
especially where original design and construction details are not known.
In addition, foundation and dam degradation occurs for various reasons and many continue to worsen. To add to this,
safety and design standards have changed over the years and many of these aging structures must be upgraded to
meet current international standards. Research is required for the development and evaluation of new diagnostic
monitoring tools and techniques in order to assess the stability and safety of existing dams.
It is therefore necessary to do constant analysis and repair due to aging infrastructure and poor operational
performance. In this regard, municipalities, government water officials, technical engineers and environmental
experts are constantly working hard to strengthen maintenance, regularly rehabilitating dams, and improving dam
management and safety. New repair models, materials and techniques can reduce the cost of required dam safety
improvements.
This seminar provides delegates with comprehensive instruction in dam safety inspection and evaluation. Although
references will be made to organisational procedures and units of reclamation, the principles, concepts, and
procedures are readily adaptable to any organization conducting a regulatory or in-house dam safety program for
existing dams.
This interactive Masterclass will:

Pieter is a Professional Engineer and dam specialist on design, operation, maintenance and
management of dams in RSA. He is based in Limpopo Province and a Director in PG Consulting
Engineers. He started his career in the Department of Water Affairs in 1982 and has nearly
30years experience in the field of dam engineering.
Bart Schoevaerts, General Manager Africa at Geobrugg
Bart Schoevaerts Is the Managing Director of GEOBRUGG Southern Africa (pty) Ltd. He worked
for 15 years at Shell International Petroleum Company of which 10 years in Africa (Ghana, Ivory
Coast, Senegal & South Africa) and the last 3 years spending most of my time in the East (Japan,
China, Singapore).. Bart joined Geobrugg AG in May 2010 as Manager for the Africa operations
and has a Masters in Business Science in from EHSAL (Brussels)
