NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
2004 has come and gone, and so have the
resolutions. Did they become a way of life or just
passing promises to yourself that were shelved and
are gathering dust next to your stack of self-help books?
If you’re like most Americans, you might be planning
another weight-related resolution for 2005. Unless you
Laurel Sterling Prisco, R.D. have an iron will, resolutions—and diets (not eating
plans)—don’t work.
It’s not your fault. The psychology of dieting is flawed. Diets are temporary
and short-lived because they generally begin from a mind set of restriction. No
one I know (myself included) likes to be told what they can and can’t eat. So
when one strays, instead of righting themselves, most abandon the diet. In fact,
studies by the
National Institutes of
that one year after
It’s important to recognize that every body and everyone’s
circumstances are different; therefore, no single eating plan works
for everyone! Weight problems can be attributed to genetics, age,
inactivity, high-fat diet, medical issues, medications, or unstable
blood sugar levels, just to name a few. So it is unreasonable to
conclude that there is a one-diet-fits-all regime out there.
Second, we must understand that both diet and physical
activity play a crucial role in creating and maintaining long-term
changes to our health. When you adopt a healthy way of life,
you can avoid the “I give up”-binging scenario that usually
accompanies a restriction diet.
Third, be patient. I have yet to find a quick fix to health. Let’s
think about this. Did you gain 40 extra pounds in two weeks?
Did your cholesterol increase overnight? Did your diabetes
develop in one month? I didn’t think so. Let’s be realistic and
really look at the long-standing habits and choices that may have
led to these conditions, as well as the reasons why we have not
changed them. Consider the home and work environment, and
the emotional connection some of us have with food. Mindless
eating is commonplace now, but it can be changed. It takes a
certain amount of wanting change, then dedicating energy and
action to maintain our health in this fast-paced society of
convenience we live in. We need to take charge of our own
health! To better empower you to do that, here are some tips on
PELARGONIUM SIDOIDES
Nature’s Solution to the Common Cold, Bronchitis, Tonsillitis, and Sinusitis
Cold season can extend from fall well into
spring. It is worth spending a moment
discussing the best natural additions to our
medicine chests for successfully fighting off
symptoms such as runny and stuffy noses, sore
throats, and coughs.
One of the most exciting new options is a root
extract—a member of the geranium family known as
Pelargonium sidoides. Traditionally used by the Zulu
Don Brown, N.D.
to treat coughs, upper respiratory tract irritations,
and even tuberculosis (TB), the extract has been studied extensively in over
5,000 adults and children, and successfully and safely treats the common cold
and shortens the severity and duration of hard-to-treat conditions such as
tonsillitis, bronchitis, and sinusitis. The real bonus is the ability of this unique
natural medicine to treat the underlying causes of these conditions while keeping
the immune system strong—results sorely missing with the use of conventional
cold products and antibiotics.
ANCIENT ZULU REMEDY TO MODERN MEDICINE
Native to the coastal regions of South Africa, Pelargonium sidoides was
described as “umKhulkane” (denoting respiratory infection) and “uHlabo”
(roughly meaning chest pain) by the Zulu. The herbal remedy was
introduced to Europeans in the late 19th century by the
Englishman and TB-sufferer, Charles Stevens. On a trip to
South Africa to seek a cure for TB, he consulted a tribal healer
who gave him a strong concoction of Pelargonium sidoides
root. Fully recovered, he returned to England with this new
remedy and popularized it throughout Europe as “Steven’s
Consumption Cure.”
The rediscovery of the root extract occurred in Germany
where a standardized product known as Umckaloabo® has been
approved for the treatment of bronchitis, tonsillitis, and sinusitis. The
overwhelming success of the product has led to its recent introduction to the
United States as Umcka® Coldcare from Nature’s Way Products.
HEALTHCARE APPLICATIONS
While there are many traditional remedies for the common cold, bronchitis,
tonsillitis, and sinusitis, many lack necessary clinical studies to support their
effectiveness and safety. Not so with the standardized root extract of Pelargonium
sidoides. Specific findings include:
Common Cold:
A recent study gave 93 adults suffering the common cold either Pelargonium
sidoides root extract (30 drops or 1.5 mL three times per day) or a placebo for
10 days. By the fifth day, the majority of participants taking the herbal extract
reported not only feeling better, but were back to almost 75 percent of their
normal level of activity. Those taking the placebo didn’t feel much better and
were at only about 50 percent of normal activity. By day 10, 82 percent of those
taking the herbal remedy were back to their normal daily routine compared to
only 54 percent of those taking the placebo.
Bronchitis:
A clinical study treated 468 adults with bronchitis with either the Pelargonium
sidoides root extract (30 drops three times per day) or a placebo. Treated for only
seven days, symptoms such as cough, chest pain, sputum production, and
shortness of breath were reduced by almost 50 percent in those persons taking
the herbal extract compared to those taking the placebo. Coughing either
improved or disappeared in 89 percent of those taking Pelargonium sidoides
compared to only 57 percent of those taking the placebo.
Tonsillitis:
Sore throats in children are a challenging condition for parents and healthcare
professionals to manage. Once the possibility of strep-throat is ruled out, many
children have sore throats that can be treated without antibiotics. A
study gave 143 children (ages six to 10) with non-strep tonsillitis
either Pelargonium sidoides root extract (20 drops or 1 mL
three times per day) or a placebo for six days. Notable was the
finding that by day 2 of treatment, children taking the herbal
extract were already reporting symptom relief. By day 6, these
kids were reporting almost complete absence of sore throat
and swallowing difficulties. By the end of the study, almost 81
percent of the children taking the herbal remedy were back at
school compared to only 21 percent taking the placebo.
Sinusitis:
A frustrating and difficult condition to treat, sinusitis is often a recurring
problem and often resistant to repeated antibiotic use. A new study has shown
that using Pelargonium sidoides root extract (60 drops or 3 mL three times per
day) for 21 days dramatically reduces not only symptom severity in adults with
acute sinusitis, but also improves the health of the sinuses. Using x-rays to check
for sinus congestion, the study found that almost 98 percent of those taking the
herbal extract had normal x-rays by the end of the study compared to only 10
percent of those taking a placebo. Notable in this study is that none of the
participants took antibiotics.
As stated above, the researched Pelargonium sidoides root used in these
clinical studies is available in the product Umcka ® Coldcare from Nature’s Way.
The safety and effectiveness of this extract for both adults and children makes it
a must-have for any natural medicine cabinet.
The search for The
And people will go to extremes—from plastic
surgery to sleeping in oxygen beds—to halt
the march time takes across their face.
Despite these efforts, there’s considerable
evidence that the basics of a healthy regime—
proper exercise and nutrition—are the best
preservers of health and well-being in old age.
Research shows increasing activity has
positive effects on many of the risk factors for
developing chronic disease and on mortality
rates, and that exercise has an ameliorating
role once these diseases are established. Other
studies show that 85 percent of Americans
older than 65 have at least one chronic
RELIEVE CHRONIC
LASER THERAPY
Thursday, Jan. 13th
Jeffrey Winston, D.C. Have you suffered from
chronic pain associated
with injuries and conditions, such as …
• Arthritis
• Foot, ankle, and leg problems
(Plantar Fasciitis/bone spurs)
• Knee, hip, and spinal problems
(back/neck/TMJ)
• Shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand
problems (Carpal Tunnel)
… and never found relief?
Look no further. Already available in
Canada and Europe, Cold Laser Therapy
comes to the U.S. for the first time to control
pain and heal tissue in rehabilitation medicine.
It is safe, painless, quick, and easy to apply;
and results are often immediate with no side
effects.
A cold or low-level laser is a therapeutic
non-surgical, non-invasive device that
painlessly penetrates two to three inches into
the body using non-visible light to stimulate
and regenerate damaged or injured muscles,
ligaments, nerves, bones, joints, and soft
tissue. It works on softening scar tissue that
originally formed to protect the injured area. It
increases joint mobility and reduces and stops
inflammation, restoring the injured body part
back to or near pre-injury condition, without
drugs or surgery.
Cold Laser Therapy uses invisible laser
light, Theralase TLC500, cutting-edge
technology used by NASA, which stimulates
cells to increase lymph flow, decreases the
firing of pain fibers, and reinitiate healing.
Join Paul Knight and Jeffrey Winston,
D.C., as they discuss positive cumulative and
systemic effects of this therapy, the conditions
it helps, as well as explain and demonstrate a
typical treatment.
Pivotal in bringing Cold Laser Therapy to
the U.S. and beginning the FDA approval
process, Paul Knight has had a Cold Laser
Therapy practice in Rochester for several years
and is expanding into Syracuse and Buffalo.
FIRST LINE THERAPY
INTRO SESSION
Monday, Jan. 24th
6:00 - 7:30 PM
Have you tried
weight-loss programs and
Georgia Austin been unsuccessful? Did
you regain the weight you
lost and then some? Then try a LIFESTYLE
CHANGE, not a fad diet. First Line Therapy,
a therapeutic lifestyle program, offers a
weight-loss plan supervised by medical
practitioners.
Research demonstrates that many of the
chronic diseases associated with altered body
composition are largely caused by lifestyle
choices. These include heart disease, high
blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, high
cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, stress and
hormone-related disorders, and cancer. A
therapeutic lifestyle program is now
recommended as the “first line of therapy” for
individuals with many of these conditions.
First Line Therapy runs 12 weeks and
uses Bio-Impedance Analysis (BIA)—a
measurement of body composition and body
fat—combined with weekly follow-up visits.
To create a wellness plan to fit your health
and life goals, join Dr. Ralph Krutulis and
Georgia Austin for an informational session
longer and reduce the amount of fatty
foods you consume.
• Avoid skipping meals, and plan meals
and snacks out ahead of time to avoid
poor choices.
• Try starting change in one meal a day
instead of all three. Simply eliminating
200 calories/meal equals 1,400 calories/
week and a loss of about 20 lbs/year.
• Eat slower; chew foods thoroughly and
savor the taste. It takes 20 minutes for
the stomach to register as full, so wait
as long before having a second helping.
• Physical activity may reduce the urge to
eat because it helps relieve stress and
improve self-esteem. So pick a time of
day that fits your schedule best.
