PERSONAL ESCAPE SYSTEM 

The Petzl EXO Personal Escape system provides firefighters 

with a fast, reliable means of escape from a 

burning structure when using a conventional exit is no 

longer possible. 

A firefighter trained and equipped with the EXO system 

can quickly deploy the unique anchor and rope, then 

move rapidly towards an egress point and descend to 

a lower level.

The self-braking EXO device can help prevent the 

firefighter from falling should he lose control of 

the rope, allowing him to concentrate on getting 

out of the building. 

Once outside, he can use the EXO to descend to 

a lower level. Trained personnel can execute the 

entire exit sequence in as little as 10 seconds. 

In a last-resort scenario, the EXO’s advantages of 

speed, adaptability and self-braking function offer 

the best possible means of escape.

TESTING and CERTIFICATION 

Developed in collaboration with FDNY, the EXO 

was subjected to extensive testing in Petzl’s 

state-of-the-art test lab. In addition, the FDNY 

ran its own series of rigorous tests, putting the 

EXO through more than 10,000 evolutions at its 

training facility. These tests validated system 

performance and helped the department formulate 

proper usage and training protocol. No self-rescue 

rope system has ever been subjected to such 

thorough testing and scrutiny. 

The EXO Personal Escape System is certified 

to meet the NFPA 1983 (2006 ed.) standard.

to be quickly detached from the headband and mounted

single light source capable of switching from proximity 

lighting to a 35m focused beam by quickly sliding a lens. 

In Boost mode, the range can be extended to 50m for 

short bursts. Non-incendive protection limits sparking 

risk and overheating in normal use.

LED cluster. The halogen light source is ideal for long distance lighting (100m), 

while the 14 LEDs produce a white, even light for close proximity needs. The 

regulated 14 LED cluster features 3 lighting levels; maximum, optimum, & 

economic, and maintains a constant level lighting for up to 63 hours. The lamp 

will automatically switch to reserve power mode when the batteries are almost 

completely discharged and is waterproof down to -5m (IP X8). 

Helmet does not meet the optional requirements of the EN397 standard concerning 

electric insulation.
