In that time he has become the richest man in the world—not bad for someone still in his early 40s. Yet despite his enormous wealth and achievements, Gates shows no signs of slowing down. The final lessons from the Gates school of business are: ♦ Don’t try to explain. Gates has felt the need to share his vision with the rest of us. His book The Road Ahead, which set out his view of the technological future, prompting some to wonder whether Gates’ vanity was starting to get the better of him. Although the book generated a huge amount of interest, its message was not as inspiring or exciting as some had hoped. ♦ Don’t look back. Fundamental to Microsoft’s success has been Gates’ willingness to keep his eyes firmly on the road ahead. “Looking in the rear-view mirror is ... a waste of time, basically,” Gates has said. Yet he is well aware of his historical context. ♦ Plan your succession carefully. With his remarkable track record over the past two decades it is inevitable that people will ask what happens to Microsoft without Bill Gates? In fact, the whole succession issue presents the man with the Midas touch with something of a dilemma. With so much of his personal fortune tied up in Microsoft stock, the one thing that’s certain is that if and when he decides to stand down, he will have the interests of shareholders uppermost in his mind. ♦ Create the future. Gates generates a certain amount of awe among those who regard him as the predictor and architect of the digital age. To be fair, some if not all of his reputation as a visionary is deserved. History may judge him more kindly than his many de-

To date, Microsoft has been faster on its feet than the rest of the pack. To maintain its position, its famous leader has never been afraid to abandon the past to pursue the future. Gates more than any other figure this century understands what the phrase technological revolution really means. He knows there are only the quick and the dead.
