1 Executive summary The main goal of ESONET NoE is to build up a community of experts in Europe for the different fields of interest related to deep ocean observatories. In the technical field the limits of what is technical feasible today will be reached when constructing and operating an ocean observatory and therefore there is a significant incentive for the ocean science community to bring all the European experts in this field together. Before one can start talking on standard procedures one has to compile all the knowledge that is presently available and subsequently provide this to the user community as the so called “Best Practices”. Best Practices in this case means that methods and procedures are discussed and identified to provide a coherent and efficient approach in the context of ocean observatory systems. The following scientific/technical areas have been addressed: Experience with existing cabled observation systems Scientific sensor systems with high relevance for ocean observatories like acoustic and biochemical sensors Sensor interfaces standardisation Underwater intervention, like instrument deployment, servicing and maintenance procedures Although in Europe a significant knowledge and competence in the field of ocean observations exists the anticipated activities should be embedded into an international framework. That will allow a more efficient and focussed exchange of information worldwide and on the long run also the shared use of the established systems. The ARGO project can be seen as a template for a global observing system although the technical infrastructure is much simpler. The interoperability in that case was enforced by introducing strict standards on the hardware and the data processing. For ocean observatories it will not be that straightforward but the discussions have to be started now. The 2 nd Best Practices Workshop was split into three thematic groups, instrumentation, infrastructure, and interoperability. With the choice of acoustic and physico-chemical sensors two groups have been selected that differ strongly in regard to the collected experience and the deployment considerations that have to be taken into account. For biochemical sensors stability and common calibration procedures is a major issue. Acoustic sensing is very well suited for long-term observations. However, the large amount of data that accrue is calling for pre-processing algorithms that have to be well defined and made transparent to the user. In Europe there are already cabled ocean infrastructures in place that allow for testing equipment, instrument deployment and data processing procedures. The session has been used to exchange information with other ongoing EU projects like KM3NET. Stand- Alone observatory will have a role in open ocean observations. They can be seen as extensions to mooring systems where new concepts have to be found to extend communication and power supply capabilities. The interoperability theme group consisted of a session on data analysis methods, the sensor interface standardization session where an observatory reference model has been defined and the underwater intervention session. This last session will have a great importance to guarantee the functionality of ocean observatories over long time spans. The discussions were focussing on training and simulation methods that will allow for an interoperability of European deep-sea intervention tools. The 2 nd Best Practices Workshop was held on the 8 th and 9 th of October at IFREMER in Brest. Beside the discussion in the sessions attendees had the opportunity to visit the facilities and use this to stimulate the discussions. <strong>Deliverable</strong> #50 - update October 2010 5
