What is aWatch Winder?
A watch winder is used to keep
automatic or self-winding watches
running when they aren’t being
worn. Because automatic watches
wind themselves using a moving
weight inside the watch, if the watch
is not worn, it will run down. While
most automatic watches can be
manually wound, this is not always
convenient or best for some watches,
and you may wish to consider
buying an automatic watch winder.
The watch winder can hold one
or multiple watches and works by
moving them in a circular pattern to
mimic the movement of the wearer.
A mechanism in watches prevents
it from being over wound, so
watch winders cannot damage your
watch. However, using a timerbased
winder can prevent excessive
wear on the winding mechanism.
Watch winders are a convenience for
the owner and can be particularly
helpful if you own more than one
timepiece or leave your watch off for
extended periods of time. Choose a
winder based on its convenience to
you. The single biggest advantage of
a winder for seldom-worn watches
is for those with complex perpetual
calendar features that may require
elaborate resetting after the watch
has been stopped for a while.
Watch winders tend to fall into
three main categories:
Functional. These winders work with
one or more watches. Generally, these
hold the watch on the exterior of the
device. Therefore, they tend to need
to be on a tabletop or tall shelf.
Elegant. These winders go beyond
pure functionality and offer a nice
form and exterior. Normally they are
a completely enclosed box, often
made of nicely finished wood or
covered in leather. They are suitable
for display on a desk or dresser, yet
many are capable of fitting inside
a drawer or safe deposit box.
Lavish. These watch winders
are often as extravagant as the
watches themselves. They can
include heaters to keep the watch
near body temperature, built-in
storage drawers, and atomicclock-synchronized
time displays.
Watch winders come with either
A/C or battery powered units.
TOURBILLON REGULATOR
A New Interpretation of a Classic
A masterpiece of haute horlogerie was created in the
Glashütte Original manufactory, emerging from the
strive for perfection and the traditional values of the
demanding art of watchmaking: the modern Tourbillon
Regulator in platinum, limited to 100 pieces worldwide.
The tripartite, three-dimensional dial made of white
gold is hand-guilloché and galvanized black. There is
a circular cutaway for the tourbillon that also houses
the second scale on the left-hand side, while on the
right one finds the 154° scale for the hour display.
The minute display in the shape of a separate disk,
an indication so essential to the regulator display,
centrally rises above the dial on a second level in
generous dimensions. The minute disk includes a
small cutaway for the tourbillon, which is secured
to the dial by a tapered bridge so that it does not
impede the view of this timepiece’s beating heart.
This ticking jewel is powered by freshly developed
manufacture Caliber 46, a manually wound mechanical
movement. The finely finished movement, disposing
of one single spring barrel with a power reserve of
60 hours ± 5%, includes gold chatons, blued screws,
beveled edges, polished steel parts, and winding
wheels underneath the sapphire crystal case back.
The tourbillon restrains the free running of the gear
train, thus controlling the seconds, minutes, and
even the retrograde hours of the time displayed
with its constant rhythm. The energy is passed to
a module via the center pinion, which is snapped
up by the retrograde jump hour’s mechanism. A
pin wheel that jumps forward a precise fourteen
degrees every hour takes care of changing the
hour display when it’s time to move forward.
