Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation
Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation is the second of two taxation courses in the CGA-‐Canada
Program of Professional Studies. The course offers an in-‐depth examination of reorganizations and tax
planning, building on the personal and corporate taxation concepts and skills covered in your study of
Personal & Corporate Taxation or an equivalent course. The combined knowledge acquired in Personal
& Corporate Taxation and Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation provides a solid foundation for
solving tax problems in the framework of professional practice.
The overall aims of Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation are
• to ensure that you can apply the principles and concepts of the Canadian Income Tax Act with
Regulations with particular emphasis on corporate reorganizations;
• to help you to develop professional skills in application of tax principles and concepts related to
the solution of complex tax problems of individuals, trusts, partnerships, and corporations;
• to improve your ability in the area of tax planning.
In TX2, students develop and strengthen competencies related to their technical knowledge of taxation,
finance and financial planning, general business, and their professionalism as a CGA. In particular,
students develop competence in tax liability, exposure, and compliance issues, as well as in evaluating
tax consequences of transactions and advising on tax planning. Students also develop a deeper
understanding of their role with regard to ethics and trust, and strengthen their ability to adopt an
integrated approach in serving their clients and the public interest. Finally, students continue to develop
important competencies in the areas of problem solving and communication.
TX2 comprises 10 modules. The textbook for this course is Canadian Income Tax Act with Regulations,
90 th Edition.
Other readings and reference materials are:
• Income Tax Bulletins, Circulars, and Technical News, 2010 Edition (Toronto, Ontario: CCH
Canadian Limited, 2010); the tax bulletins, circulars, and technical news are also available on the
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website
• TX2 Readings Book, Second Edition (Vancouver, BC: CGA-‐Canada, 2010)
• Ethics Readings Handbook [ERH], Third Edition (Vancouver, BC: CGA-‐Canada, 2010) (provided
electronically through the “Reference library” link under the Resources tab)
The TX2 Readings Book consists of core material written by the course authors. Most topics have a
corresponding reading in the Readings Book, numbered according to the topic number (for example,
Reading 1-‐1 is the required selection for Topic 1.1).
Assessment Structure
• There are five assignments in TX2, one after each of Modules 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9. These
assignments are worth 100 marks each for a total of 500 marks.
• These assignments qualify students to write the exam.
• Each Module consists of self test questions.
• Each Module consists of test your knowledge questions.
