even while on vacation
"By FLOR CE EDDIN$,.PASTQR_
"Grace Metbodirt Church
. This summer has rushed by with
considerable speed• Vacation rime was
good for me, although being 'away' from
church duties did not mean, for me,
being away from many questions of life.
No matter where we Wavelet, especially
in Nova Scotia, we were asked
about the questionable integrity of our
nation's president. Then there came the
'confesSion,' and then th' i ews of our
nation's military response to the terrorist
bombings.
to college. Others struggle w .th illness
and disab'dity.
The Sunday I was in Alabama, I
attended my 'home' Episcopal chu[ch,
where the Psalm of the day was one of
my favorites and quite fitting for us all,
Psalm 46. The translation used that day
had a couple of neat variations, which I
share her :
God is our refuge and strength, a
very present help in trouble. Therefore
we will n r-fear, though the earth be
moved,-and though the mountains be
toppled intu the depths of the sea ... The
On a more personal level, my travel natiohs make much ado, and the kingto
Alabama brought me in touch with a- doms are shaken; God has spoken, and
family who has been dealing w!th the earth shall melt away. The Lord of
tragedy, including a son's suicide, - hosts is with us,+ he God ofJacob is oar
divorces, grandparents having to raise
toddl.ers', and now the latest, another
- son's brain-rumor.
I guess there is no way to completely
• get away from life with its pain and its
failures. Even as I write this, Hurricane
Bonnie threatens folks who_ live near
coastlines and parents agonize over
whether their kids are really going hack
stronghold. Cdhe now and look upon
the works of the Lord, what awesome
things he has done on earth. It is he who
makes war to cease in all the world; he
breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,
and burns the shields with fire. 'Be still
then and know that I am God; I will be
