1961 - Dr. Cooley attempted a pulmonary embolectomy
using CPB.
1962 - Dr. Sharp performed the first successful pulmonary
embolectomy in the United States.
Two surgical approaches ultimately evolved for the
management of pulmonary embolus.
1. Operations that focused on the removal of an embolus
to the lung.
2. Operations that were designed to prevent embolization.
Note: Sudden interruption of vena cava flow caused a
decreased cardiac output and severe peripheral edema
