A unique possibility for an extended cruise on rivers and canals offers the destination<br />
Eastern Burgundy and Franche-Comté. Due <strong>to</strong> its geographic location the Saône has<br />
long been an important waterway from Mid-Europe <strong>to</strong> the South. The Saône branch<br />
(the Petite Saône and the Canal des Vosges) and the Doubs branch (the river<br />
Doubs and the Rhine-Rhone Canal) come from northern Europe. They converge <strong>to</strong><br />
form a V-shape which sides close <strong>to</strong> St. Jean de Losne and then leads south <strong>to</strong>wards<br />
the Rhône and the Med. In the past these rivers s<strong>to</strong>od as dividing lines for the East<br />
(the Empire) and the West (the Franconian kingdom). This has influenced the culture<br />
<strong>to</strong> a great extent and you will still find some extraordinary castles along these<br />
waterways.
