Message from the President
The lawn bowling season has now come to an end. There may be one or
two tournaments still being played and some bowlers may still be enjoying
a jitney or two. However, the sights of lawn bowlers in Ontario are
set on the 2012 season.
2011 was a memorable year. There were many excellent games played.
Hundreds of awards and certificates are being presented. Our Junior
Bowlers turned in another superb performance. But, best of all were the
National Championships played at the Willowdale and Agincourt lawn
bowling clubs. Those games will bring warmed to our winter nights.
Now, we are in the season of meetings. All clubs will be holding their
Annual General meeting with reports, awards and elections. The Districts
too will be holding similar meetings and planning for the 2012 season
activities. The most important meeting, of all, however, is the meeting
which will take place in Peterborough on October 22nd. That is the
OLBA Fall meeting. All of you are invited and, this is a meeting you
should not miss. See you there.
Meet the Peterborough Lawn
Bowling Club
The OLBA Board has been shifting its spring and fall meetings from
one club to another. There is a reason for this fine decision. It means
that not all the meetings are held in Toronto, as beautiful as that city
is. It means that bowlers in one region may have to drive some distance
to an OLBA meeting in the spring or fall. Then in the next season
the meeting may be just down the street. At the same time it gives each
region an opportunity to showcase its clubs.
This fall the meeting site is Peterborough, the hub of east-central Ontario.
Peterborough is a very scenic city with a population of 74,000
people. It has fine shopping and very scenic byways. It has a canal with lift locks which conducts
tourist marine traffic from Lake Ontario on up to Georgian Bay. It has a zoo that is well
worth seeing. And, it has a lawn bowling club known by bowlers across Ontario.
There was a time, not too many years ago when the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club could
boast over 250 members and three greens. Like clubs across the province, those days are a
memory, but not necessarily gone forever. Now the club has around 100 members and only two
greens. The club, however, is looking for ways to increase its membership again and it thinks it
has found a winner.
The club can boast a vigorous and well renowned junior program. Under the competent leadership
of Andy Caldwell, the Peterborough LBC has a junior element which is the envy of all other
clubs. Juniors from the Peterborough regularly compete successfully in provincial and national
tournaments. Juniors from Peterborough have also gone to International competitions. These
juniors, bowling in the exalted ranks of the experts, are not at the tip of pole. They are at the tip
of a pyramid, with an entire program beneath them which enrolls new youngsters and introduces
them to the world of bowls. Eventually, it will be the new youngsters who will come along
to take the place of bowlers like Mitchell Dack, the Caldwell brothers, Jesse and Lucas and and
Katie and Sarah Berthalot as well as others of their ilk.
Peterborough Lawn Bowls New Clubhouse.
The Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club has a long and enviable history. Organized lawn bowling
in Peterborough dates back to 1901. In fact, there was lawn bowling in Peterborough in 1898.
The present club has been at this location since 1928 and has been in continuous operation
since 1930. However, in recent times the membership rolls the club were shrinking. In 2010
there were only about 100 members. Clearly, the three greens that the club boasted were not
being used to the same extent as they had once been. Something had to be done.
Club executive found a partner in Whitlaw Mariners Senior Center. The Senior Center had been
housed in leased accommodations. Then the lease ran out and the members were finding that
their welcome seemed to have run out too. The WMSC needed a new home. The difficulties the
Center was facing had already resulted in their 400 members dropping to 200. The joining of
the PLBC and the WMSC seemed like an excellent choice. And so, an agreement was made and
the work was started.
The first order of business was funding. Funds were provided through Canada’s Economic Ac-

tion Plan. Through this plan the Federal Government contributed $520,000. with an equal
amount coming from the Provincial and municipal Governments for a total project cost of
$1,560,000.
The second order of business was where to put the new structure. When the Lawn Bowling
members looked around there was really only one place the new clubhouse and Activity Center
could go. With the reduced membership of the club the third green had not seen much use.
The new clubhouse has been placed where the third
green used to be.
Of course there was always the issue of the old clubhouse.
The original clubhouse was built 83 years ago
as a one season (summer) building for Lawn Bowling.
It had no heat for most of that time and has suffered
because of that. Winter freezing, snow and ice have
caused problems with the building. Mould and dry rot
have been significant problems. Then a buyer was
found. The Peterborough Pagans Rugby Club have
been in existence for more than 50 years. In 2010, the
club made arrangements to purchase the Peterborough
Lawn Bowling Club's heritage clubhouse, thus saving it from destruction. It will be
moved to Nicholls’ Oval by fall 2011, which means that the Pagans will be returning to rugby’s
original “home field” in Peterborough. Thus, both the lawn bowling club and the rugby club
will benefit.
At the moment the Peterborough LBC and the WMSC has 325 members. The club also has two
bowling greens. With the opening of the new Activity Center the club also has a large clubhouse
with two full working floors, a full kitchen and bar and can host a large function on the
main floor with a smaller function being conducted on the lower level. It has a 100 foot viewing
veranda that overlooks the bowling greens. The mission statement of the club is to participate
in the game of lawn bowls in a sportsmanship style and to enjoy the company of other
bowlers. The mission statement of the Activity Center is to see that the center promotes the
health, well being and companionship of its members. The new Activity Center will provide
lawn bowling, shuffleboard, darts, bid euchre, euchre, yoga, Tia Chi, crafts, computer access.
It can also host weddings, receptions, Jack and Jill parties, bridle showers and similar celebratory
events.
May we wish the very best of luck to
the Peterborough LBC and its new facilities.

ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS REPORT
2011 was a rewarding year. It is the year in which I accepted this position from Rosemary
Stadnyk. I wish to thank Rosemary who got me started. There are several other
Board members to whom I also owe a sincere ‘Thank you’. My thanks to Ryan Stadnyk
who provided me the Beaver and Big Shot Pins. I am also grateful to our Treasurer,
Rich Peart, for handling the cheques. Arja Nesbitt was wonderful as I struggled to get
myself settled to the new task. She helped in more ways than one, in guiding me along
the way. Arja, your guidance was very much appreciated. I also wish to say to the
Board of Directors, ‘thank you’ for letting me take over this important task.
To all the Club contacts who reached out to me. thank-you for assisting me by providing
me with the information that I needed. It was only because of what you did that I
was able to get back to you in a timely manner in what you requested. To all the award
winners who received the pins, certificates, and plaques, ‘Congratulations’. To all the
club volunteers, a huge thank-you for your dedication and hard work. It is the work
you do that allows the clubs to succeed.
Back in June and July, as you will recall, there was a Canada Postal strike. However, I
didn’t let that deter me from the work I had to do. For those clubs which are close to
my home club I was able to connect and hand deliver plaques, certificates, and some
pins.
May I offer a friendly remainder to any club official who wishes to request a future
award for their club or member and you want to know the prerequisites for the award
you wish to request. Please, check the OLBA website www.olba.ca under the awards
section before contacting me. All the information is there that you need to provide me
before I can process your requests. When you locate the award form that meets your
needs, you must print it out. I can only work with a completed hard copy of the form.
Include a cheque payable to the OLBA if it is requested on the form for the award you
want. Send the completed form and cheque to me at my postal address. My postal address
is in the Annual.
To the club Officials: Please remember that you and I have to work together. I need a
reasonable timeline for getting your requests to you. Don’t set impossible dates and expect
me to meet them. Also, send me just one postal address for me to use to get back
to you. Thank you.
As our President said in her message, “2012 was a memorable year. There were many excellent
games played.” There were also many excellent photos taken of the action that ensued, photos
of the winners, of the teams and of the great bowlers that our province has produced. Perhaps
it is time, as the season winds to a close to see some of the photos that never saw print.
