The Seven Holy Founders
of the Servite Order – Fr. Paul
This title refers to the group of men canonized in 1888
and for whom our Parish is named. Today those who staff
the Parish are simply known as Servites or Servite Friars.
Others know us as members of the Order Friar Servants
of Mary, U.S.A. Province. Each month I plan to include a
bulletin column that updates some of the good works taking
place internationally by Friars, Sisters, cloistered
Nuns, and members of the Servite Secular Order. In the
United States our Friars serve in one community in Missouri,
one in Oregon, one in Colorado, four in California,
and four in Illinois. There are others who live outside community
and serve in Florida, California, Ireland, Italy, and
Connecticut. Not all Friars were born where our communities
are located today. I was born in New Jersey, others in
Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, New Mexico,
Vancouver BC, Puerto Rico, West Virginia, Ireland,
Burma, and Wisconsin. The Servite Friars who serve in
our international delegations are considered members of
the Province. This includes those in Perth and Melbourne,
Australia and those in Kwa-Zulu, South Africa. Our Servite
Sisters have Province headquarters in Illinois, Wisconsin
and Nebraska. Secular Servants of Mary are located
throughout the United States, including our Parish
group.
International highlights include: the Solemn profession
of Zulu Servite Sifiso Mchunu, the first Provincial
Chapter of the new Indian (Mary of Unity) Province, the
Archbishop of Florence becoming a Cardinal and assigned
our Servite Parish of San Marcello al Corso as his
Roman titular Church, the first celebration of the Feast of
the Founders in Deir Rafat, Israel, at the Shrine of Our
Lady, Queen of Palestine, the February 25 th Episcopal
ordination of long-time acquaintance Fr, Gaetan Proulx,
OSM as Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Quebec,
Canada, and the June 17, 2012 beatification of Servite
tertiary Cecilia Eusepi of Nepi, Italy.
I have been living in Affton since June 19 th and despite
the rumor, I was NOT responsible for the heat wave
because I root for the American League Angels, (I like the
Cardinals) but I will take credit for it cooling off. Oh!! the
power of prayer. Depending on the weekly schedule of
meetings I hope to take Wednesday as a day off. My participation
in some of the activities of our Parish organizations
will be limited by my being the only Parish Priest.
One of the first events affected will be the Women’s
ACTS Retreat the last week of July. My prayers and support
will be with them as I celebrate the Eucharist those
days. I believe registrations are still being taken. The personal
welcome by so many is appreciated. I will keep
working on the names. Thank you also to all the liturgical
ministers serving on the weekends and at daily Mass. I
hope that we can all get together in August for some reflection
and sharing. Those traveling - be safe.
